HOWARD STERN: RADIO LEGEND. KING OF ALL
MEDIA. SINGLE GUY?
By Leonard Stegmann
Howard Stern is the most popular radio personality in the world. He is also The King of
All Media, and single-handedly revolutionized radio in the United States. Or at least
that’s the way he tells it.
Like him or hate him, by now most people know who he is. And regular listeners to his
morning drive program are familiar with the badgering style that he uses so effectively to
pry the most intimate details of his guest’s personal lives. This is why so many people
were surprised when Stern, married for over twenty years, announced a while back that
he and his wife were separating. They have since divorced.
Talking about his personal life has always been a big part of Stern’s show and fans are
likely to miss the on-air discussions, arguments and outright fights that he had with his
wife. Still, tuning in as Stern made the transition from married life to single guy was both
educational and hilarious.
Stern, in his own unique way, presented the entire panorama of single life, from living
alone to dating to single parenthood. We learned how this multi-millionaire might do
nothing all weekend but rent movies, or his insecurity, despite his fame, about
approaching a single woman for a date, and even the guilt he felt about leaving the home
of his three daughters.
We also got to listen as Stern’s story reached its triumphant high-point, as he eventually
began to socialize more, go out to dinner, date various, and even take vacations (gasp)
outside the United States!
Some hate Howard Stern, some love him, and some judge him without listening to him.
Yet despite how one feels, credit must be given to the man. Not just for weathering the
ups and downs that we all expect in single life, but to do so openly and on the air, baring
himself emotionally in front of millions of people. Howard Stern: King of All Singles?
