Moshi & Kibo’s Dog Blog We are two English Toy Spaniels from Dallas, TX that travel frequently with discerning and refined tastes. From hotels to private homes, we have compiled our favorite sources for finding great pet-friendly places to stay and play across the United States and beyond. Before You Go Prior to leaving on a trip with a pet, consider the itinerary and your pet’s ability to travel. We have been traveling since we were just a few months old. (We can even anticipate the time when the cart comes with the chicken in first class). However, if your dog hasn’t traveled with you before, start out slow. Barking is normal for non-traveling dogs, but not appreciated by hotel room neighbors. Pet Friendly Lodging We have stayed in hotels and private homes across the US and the Caribbean. Here are a few of out favorites: Vacation Rentals by Owner is a great resource for finding dog-friendly homes. It’s very simple – find the listings by location and then just look for a paw print for pet-friendly rentals. We have stayed at VRBO homes in many locations including: St Martin Dining al fresco with an Orient Beach view Aspen Penthouse in central Aspen Aruba One of our backyard pool friends Durango Cabin in the woods http://englishtoyspanielsblog.com 1 Kimpton Hotels Kimpton Hotels are very pet-friendly and work to ensure families with furry members feel at home. Each Kimpton location is unique with its own personality and strives to please the entire entourage. We have stayed at Kimptons in: Denver – Hotel Monaco The dog happy hour in the lobby was the coolest. (Okay, humans attended too) Aspen – Sky Hotel Ski in from Ajax, then put on the puppy coats and stroll the streets of Aspen. Boston – Nine Zero A block from Boston Common. Great walks in the Common and Beacon Hill. Four Seasons Hotels The Four Seasons Hotels are pet-friendly and in some of the best locations in the world. Dogs are welcomed, but cannot be left alone in the room. Our favorite Four Seasons: Las Vegas The only hotel on the strip that welcomes dogs, the Four Seasons occupies the top floors of the Mandalay Bay building. Austin Hanging out in back overlooking the lake is delightful and is the best location in Austin to view the bats. http://englishtoyspanielsblog.com 2 Other Super Pet-Friendly Hotels Hotel Columbia Telluride A charming hotel in downtown Telluride conveniently located across from the gondola. Inn of the Five Graces Santa Fe Gorgeous hotel & wins our most pet-friendly award with all the dog accommodations plus a dog welcome basket! Hotel Jerome Aspen Another great hotel in dog-friendly Aspen, the historic Jerome accomplishes relaxed elegance. Plaza InterContinental Kansas City The Plaza in Kansas City is the perfect place for puppy strolls. The pet-friendly Intercontinental is located directly across the street. http://englishtoyspanielsblog.com 3 Pet Travel Planning For a successful vacation with your pets, planning ahead-of-time is a must. • • • • • • • • • • • • Research pet travel requirements If traveling by airline, book your pet’s flight. If your pet cannot fly in-cabin, carefully consider if taking your pet is the best option. Book a pet-friendly hotel and understand their rules and any applicable fees. Never “sneak” your dog into a hotel or home that does not allow pets. Visit your vet, ensure your pet is healthy for travel and obtain proper documentation Call the hotel concierge ahead of time to arrange pet sitters, etc. If you will require ground transportation, make sure ahead of time that they transport pets. The hotel concierge can normally recommend pet-friendly car services. If planning pet air travel, purchase pet travel carriers approved by airlines If traveling by car, create a safe, secure, pet-friendly area in the car Pack all medicines, food, treats, waste bags and other items that could potentially be needed Place any medicines or items needed in flight with pet carriers If traveling by air, take a small, wide-mouth container with a lid for drinks and once through security, purchase a bottle of water for your pets If traveling by air in-cabin, remove collars or harnesses before heading to the airport. At security, remove pet from carrier, carry pet through scanning and then place pet back in the carrier once the carrier has gone through x-ray. Prior to traveling, make a list of pet-friendly locations, restaurants, parks, etc. for your destination • Other Pet-Friendly Travel Links The Humane Society Tips for Pet Air Travel A Summary of Airline Pet-Transport Policies USDA – International Animal Export Regulations National Association of Professional Pet Sitters American Animal Hospital Association Bring Fido.com About Moshi and Kibo Moshi and Kibo are two English Toy Spaniels that host a Dog Blog commenting on all things in the dogosphere at http://englishtoyspanielsblog.com http://englishtoyspanielsblog.com 4
