Spade, Not Neutered
We sit down for a Hollywood minute with David Spade.
Stuffmagazine.com, 5/31/2006 By Larry Dobrow Asked how he's doing at 11 A.M. on a May morning, David Spade responds, "Partying. Why not, right?" In other words, the sarcasm shtick isn't merely shtick—it's both a professional meal ticket and a way of life. Here, he riffs about the second season of Comedy Central's The Showbiz Show with David Spade (Thursdays at 10 P.M.) and reminisces about his SNL pals. What'd you learn from the first season of the show? It got too sketchy towards the end. We were out in the field too much. Whether it's good or bad, I would rather have real people saying real stupid shit. If people hang themselves, that's the best. You get your free shot, like when Vin Diesel or Sharon Stone goes on 12 talk shows and tells the same story on every one. Your friends seem to drop in from time to time. There's a big karaoke bit we're doing today: Anthony Kiedis and I singing celebrity duets. Ten years ago, [Red Hot Chili Peppers] had a song in Coneheads and they put Farley in the video. I asked [Farley] about it and he said, "Sorry, they're only going with stars right now." He rubbed it in every day. Jackass. So I said to Anthony, "Maybe we'll sing 'Soul to Squeeze' and I'll scat at the end of it." That's my thing. You've been having some fun with this year's American Idol candidates. I saw Taylor Hicks at a bar the other night. I saw Elliott…was it the night he got kicked off last week? [On the show] I said something like, "He looks like a billy goat," and then I made the noise. Naturally, I see the guy like a minute later. He comes up and says, "I watch you all the time." I say, "Uh, we do some fun, lighthearted things about American Idol." He was supercool about it. Where does this show rank in the David Spade canon? I'm really happy with it. It's fun for me. I don't like to travel to Yugoslavia to do a movie for four months. If I'm going to do a movie nobody watches, I'd rather do it here. What are the highs of your career? Tommy Boy, Joe Dirt and Dickie Roberts. The Capital One commercials were funny. Just Shoot Me! was great. I lucked into that one—I'd just left SNL and they told me, "You'd be the fifth lead on it." I looked at it and said, "Hmm, there's nobody who looks like me there, there's nobody doing my style of comedy. There's safety in numbers. Besides, I can't memorize a half hour." [On SNL] I liked doing the "Gap Girls" with Farley and Adam. I only wrote them so we could all be in a sketch together. "Buh-Bye" was funny. The "Hollywood Minute" was funny. It wasn't like I was Dana Carvey, scoring every week. I basically had a year's worth of good sketches in six years. What do you find funny on TV? I watch the crazy-home-video shows. I can't peel myself away, especially when there are animals involved. Like when a dog jumps into an aquarium—that just cracks me up. Given the Saturday Night Live casts you were a part of, I'm guessing the humor bar is set pretty high for you. I was so lucky to be around those guys, but I was also secretly a little jealous at the same time. You gotta raise your game. I shared an office with Farley, Sandler and Chris Rock. Dana and Mike Myers were in the adjoining office. Conan O'Brien and Robert Smigel were writers. There was so much stuff that's sharp—you had to run as fast as you could just to keep up. Last question, and it's the one our readers demand that we ask: Any wacky George Segal stories from the Just Shoot Me! set? Everyone's waiting for this answer, right? George was a great guy, a lot of fun…I say it like he's dead or something. He acts like he's not that old. He's dirty. He's got all these stories about people like Streisand: "I was at her house, and this one time…" Then he'll stop and say, "This doesn't mean I want to hear a story about that Tommy Boy horseshit you do." Great guy.
