Jack and Jill
The Untold Story
Written by: Mandy Tarvainen
Meet Jack and Jill……
We all know the story,
Jack and Jill went up the hill, to fetch a
pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
and Jill came tumbling after.
Of course you believe that this was the sad end for poor Jack and
Jill, but that is where you are wrong; although somewhat
disheartened, our relentless duo pursued a different course of
action. They knew that a simple stroll up the hill was not going
to work, so something else must be done!
Now, Jack and Jill were smart children. They always paid close
attention to their teacher. It just so happened that they were studying
simple machines in Science. Their teacher told them there were six
different kinds; the wedge, screw, inclined plane, wheel and axle, the
lever, and the pulley.
Wedge
Wheel & Axle
Screw
Pulley
Lever
So, Jack had a brilliant idea about how to reach the top of the
hill.
“How about a catapult”?, said Jack, “That’s right!” said Jill, “a
catapult is the simple machine, called a lever”. So, Jack decided,
“You could sit on one side, Jill, and I could launch you up to the
well”.
As Jill imagined the possible results, she realized that she would
end up with more than a broken crown, or a tumble down the
hill. “Ummm…. Let’s try something else Jack”.
So, now the catapult idea was out! Back
to square one.
The children were still determined, and
Jack had yet another brilliant idea!
“We could build a wagon!”
“We could use the hill as an inclined plane.
The wagon would include wheels and axles, as
well as screws to put it together!” said Jack
So, now the story is a little different, Jack and
Jill went up the hill, to fetch a pail of water…..
They both came down, no broken crowns, and
everyone was happy ever after!
The End!
