WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT?
 The past 20 years have seen a growing realisation that the
current model of development is unsustainable.
 In other words, we are living beyond our means.
 From the loss of biodiversity with the felling of rainforests
or over fishing to the negative effect our consumption
patterns are having on the environment and the climate.
 Our way of life is placing an increasing burden on the
  planet.

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT?
(continued)
 The increasing stress we put on resources and
environmental systems such as water, land and air cannot
  go on forever.
 Especially as the world's population continues to increase
and we already see a world where over a billion people live
on less than a dollar a day.
 The goal of sustainable development is to enable all people
throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy
a better quality of life, without compromising the quality of
  life of future generations.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT INDICATORS
(Taken from the web-site of the UK Department for the Environment,
Farming and Rural Affairs -Defra)
 In recent decades, we have become more aware of
increasing damage to the environment and a widening
global gap between the rich and the poor.
 There is a growing realisation that the way we develop is
  not sustainable.
 We need to find a way to improve our quality of life while
living within our environmental limits and ensuring a fair
  society.
 This is sustainable development.

UK GOVERNMENT APPROACH
 In 2005, all Government departments committed to the UK
  sustainable development strategy.
 This long-term plan set ambitious and positive goals.
 To achieve them, government departments at all levels
need to work closely together and with wider society.
 Sustainability is the future.
 Sustainable development can guide our choices to get us
there and create a place we want to live in.

UK GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
 The UK Government, Scottish Executive, Welsh Assembly
Government and the Northern Ireland Administration have
agreed upon a set of principles that provide a basis for
sustainable development policy in the UK.
 For a policy to be sustainable, it must respect all five
  principles.

SHARED UK PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
1. Living Within Environmental Limits
Respecting the limits of the planet’s environment,
resources and biodiversity – to improve our environment
and ensure that the natural resources needed for life are
unimpaired and remain so for future generations.

3. Achieving a Sustainable Economy
Building a strong, stable and sustainable economy which
provides prosperity for all and in which environmental and
social costs fall on those who impose them (Polluter Pays)
and efficient resource is incentivised

4. Using Sound Science Responsibly
Ensuring policy is developed and implemented on the basis of

UK PRIORITIES
 In terms of focusing our efforts, the UK has identified four
priority areas for immediate action, shared across the UK,
  these are:
   Sustainable Consumption and Production
   Climate Change and Energy
 Natural Resource Protection and Environmental
    Enhancement
   Sustainable Communities

                                                 13

WELL BEING
 The UK Government also recognises that changing
behaviour is a cross cutting theme closely linked to all of
these priorities. In addition, Securing the Future identifies
wellbeing as being at the heart of sustainable development.

OVERALL STATUS OF UK AS REGARDS MEETING THE
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PRINCIPLES SINCE 1999
 Overall improvements noted with all Principles
 However some deterioration has been noted with;
 Aviation emissions of greenhouse gases
 Fossil fuels used for electricity generation
 Nitrogen oxide emissions from electricity generation
 Carbon dioxide emissions from the service sector
 Energy supply (consumption exceeding UK production)
 Household waste arisings
 Wintering wetland bird populations
