 As an option to the website you created with

the TeacherWeb.com service, you have 50

mb of space on the Nipissing BHS to host a

website

 Dreamweaver is considered to be an

„industry standard‟ in website

development software; it is a provincially

licensed educational title.

Student Website

 URL address for your website is

student.nipissingu.ca/~your Nipissing e-mail

account

e.g., student.nipissingu.ca/~w0012345

* Do not place www in front of your address!

Webpage Advice

 You may wish to use your webspace to host

a website designed to promote / profile

yourself as an educator

 Several potential employers will have the

opportunity to peruse your website in order to

familiarize themselves with your background

 You do NOT have to upload your webpage

onto the internet; it is an option

Webpage Assessment

 Your webpage is NOT assessed by

Professor Waller (formally); he will give you

advice &/or feedback if you seek such

 Your Methods professor will peruse your

teacher portfolio towards the end of your

course

 Your website should be a component of this

portfolio

Website Content

 This is merely a guideline:

– Five page website

1. Homepage (displaying your name and website

menu)

2. Resume (Educational Background)

3. Practice Teaching Reports

4. Educational Interests

5. Perspective on Computer Technology and

Education (include a link to

Webpage Construction

 Many options

– Text editor (notepad) manually inserting the

HTML codes (tags)

– Graphic editor

 Microsoft FrontPage

 Macromedia Dreamweaver MX

– Combination of these OR others

Macromedia Dreamweaver MX

• WHY?

- Provincially Licensed in all publically funded

schools in Ontario

- Contemporary “Industry Standard” software

that provides a stable environment for

students to create webpages that can range

from very basic to very intricate „multimedia‟

designs

Getting Started

 Create a folder for your website in MY DOCUMENTS on

your laptop (e.g., My Name Website)

 All of your website files will be saved in this folder (e.g.,

webpage files, graphic files, scanned Practice Teaching

Reports, etc.)

Starting with Dreamweaver MX

 The software is found in the Education Menu folder

– Inside a subfolder called Internet & Web

– Inside a further subfolder called Macromedia

– Select Macromedia Dreamweaver MX

Define a Site

• Dreamweaver wants you to set up your website with the

software FIRST before adding any content!

• this is done in order to allow the software to coordinate any

content links and modifications that will occur

• there are several ways to accomplish this; the following

screenshots are merely meant to be a guideline

Click on OK

 Once you have completed the “Define a Site”

setup, click on the OK button and you should

see your site name displayed on the right

hand panel (plus any other files / graphics

saved in your website folder)

Inserting Content

 You‟re now ready to „build‟ your webpages

by adding content

 Recall the five page guideline mentioned

earlier

– Homepage

– Resume page

– Practice Teaching Report page, etc.

Create a new page

 Select the FILE option from the upper left text

menu and click on NEW

 Proceed to clicking on CREATE (lower right

hand side of screen)

 A new „blank‟ webpage is presented

A few tasks…

 Place your cursor in the Title Box (upper

centre area of your workspace) and change

the UNTITLED DOCUMENT name to your

name (e.g., Ken Waller)

 Select the FILE option in the upper left area

of your text menu and proceed to SAVE AS

 Save your first file as index (lower case

letters)

A few control features…

 Text placement and control features (e.g., font style,

size, alignment) are found at the bottom of the

screen

 Pressing ENTER will double space your text lines;

Shift+ENTER will enforce single spacing

 Adding colour to your page is found via the MODIFY

option (upper text menu) and proceeding to Page

Properties (select the Background box to bring up a

colour palette)

Adding a Graphic (image)

 Ensure that any desired graphics are saved in your

website folder

 Select the INSERT option from the upper text menu

and proceed to Image

 Select the desired graphic

 Try to limit your website to either JPG or GIF graphic

file formats; they will tend to be appropriate sizes to

load quickly when your website is accessed by a

visitor

Creating a Link to a Graphic

 Have your graphic selected (e.g., click on the

image)

 Type the full URL address in the Link box

below (e.g., http://www.nipissingu.ca)

 Alternate text can be displayed as well be

typing the desired text in the ALT box below

(e.g., “Producing the World‟s Best

Educators!)

Save Often, Save Early

 Save your content work often and early

 Either via the FILE --- save as option

 Or the CTRL + S keyboard shortcut

 You will want to link your pages so your website is

interactive

 Highlight the text in your menu that you wish to

activate as a link

 Click on the “Dreamcatcher” link tool below

 Drag the link line to the desired page

 Drop onto the page name (right hand side panel)

 Re-save all work

 Preview your page by pressing the F12 key

 Test out your links

A Simple Menu…

 A simple menu can be achieved using the

INSERT TABLE option

 Indicate your rows and columns

 Change Percent to Pixels

 Insert 630 as a Pixel value

 Invisible menu box (Border = 0)

 Visible menu box (Border = 1, 2, 3 or more)

Spell Check…

 Don‟t forget to check for spelling errors!

 Shift + F7 keyboard shortcut

 OR proceed to TEXT menu and select Check

Spelling

Posting your website to the Internet

 Save all files in your local website folder

 Log into the Map My Home Directory

Map My Home Directory

 Once you are logged on, you should notice

an HTML folder in your network (BHS) space

 Copy and paste all of your webpage files

(including graphics) from your laptop website

folder (e.g., in MY DOCUMENTS) to your

server HTML folder

Checking your website

 Load your browser (Internet Explorer)
