Height & Weight Screening – A Note from the School Nurse
Kearney Public Schools Health Services, working together the University of
Nebraska at Kearney will be providing a health report card to help you keep track
of your child’s growth throughout elementary school. The school nurse, with the
assistance of UNMC nursing students and UNK Human Performance Lab students,
will obtain height and weight measurements on each elementary student
beginning January 6th. Your child’s health report card will be sent home in March.
If you have any questions, please contact me through the school.

School Nurse Corner:
Influenza
Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus and is often referred
to as “The Flu”. The virus spreads from person to person in respiratory droplets
from coughing and sneezing, either by direct contact or from touching a
contaminated surface and then touching one’s mouth, nose or eyes. Adults may
be able to infect others beginning one day before getting symptoms and up to
seven days after getting sick. Common symptoms include: fever (usually high),
headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and
muscle aches.
The single best way to prevent Influenza is to get a flu shot annually. We also rely
on good health habits to keep us healthy. These include: 1) Washing your hands
often, especially before eating, after coughing or sneezing, and after using the
bathroom. 2) Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your shirtsleeve
when coughing or sneezing. 3) Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to avoid
the spread of germs. 4) Avoid other people who are ill – keep your distance. 5)
Stay home when you are too ill to be in school. The KPS handbook states “The
school’s goal is to keep students in school where they will benefit from their
attendance, while not putting other students at risk.” According to the Nebraska
State Health Guidelines, students with a temperature of 100 degrees or more may
not be in school. Students may not return until they have been without a fever
(less than 100 degrees) for 24 hours without Motrin or Tylenol.
Following these good health habits will help keep us healthy this Flu season.

School Improvement News
KPS will be expecting visitors to our schools in March of 2011 to review the progress we have made
as a school district in affecting student learning and achievement. Every school in the Kearney
Public School system will have some outside observers visit the school to look at improvement
strategies, test data and public perceptions to see if we are on track with our learning goals.
Buildings have focused on the district learning goals of improving reading, writing, and mathematics
computation. To help support student learning and achievement in those areas, teachers continue to
look at ways to improve instruction.
A necessary way to improve instruction for our students is to dialogue about specific learning needs
of our students. The KPS Board of Education has allowed some time for teachers to collaborate
during the 2 Hour Late Starts that have been built into the calendar. Our professional dialog follows
a framework called Whole Faculty Study Groups. Many of the subsequent interventions used in the
classrooms come from a process called Differentiated Instruction. Together these two programs
provide the foundation for Glenwood Elementary staff to better meet the learning needs of the
students.
Glenwood Elementary teachers have also focused on specific principles of instruction as we try to
meet the needs of our learners. The Glenwood Elementary staff has set Clear Learning Goals as an
improvement goal for this year. Our clear learning goals are stated this way:
What do we specifically want the students to know in a particular unit (facts, vocabulary,
and concepts)?
We then provide students with specific information of what we want them to Understand
(principles, generalizations, the “big” picture).
The final piece is defined in terms of verb – what will the student Do to get the learning.
Teachers receive feedback via a variety of means regarding student learning through a
process called closure. The information lets the teacher know if the students learned the
concepts being taught or if the student(s) need more instruction.
The district is excited about School Improvement process and getting feedback from other
professionals regarding the processes we are doing well and identifying which processes we could
do better. Anytime we get the opportunity to improve upon our craft is important because our
stakeholders, the students, are important to us! Thank you for what you do as parents as you provide
support to your son or daughter in their learning process as well. We will let you know the findings
from the School Improvement process later this spring.
