Motion in the Coordinate Plane         20

Part 1
1. On a sheet of graph paper draw a large coordinate plane, equally dividing the paper. In
quadrant I, plot four non-collinear points. Connect these points to form a concave polygon.
Label your points. Write down the coordinates of your points.

2. Reflect your polygon over the y-axis. DO NOT FOLD YOUR PAPER!

3. Label your image correctly. List the ordered pairs of your image.

4. Compare the ordered pairs of your pre-image and your image. If the ordered pairs of your pre-
image are (x, y), write down the rule for reflecting a shape across the y-axis.



Part 2
5. Go back to your pre-image. Reflect the polygon across the x-axis.

6. Label this second image correctly. List the ordered pairs of your image.

7. Compare the ordered pairs of your pre-image and the reflection from #5. If the ordered pairs
of your pre-image are (x, y), write down the rule for reflecting a shape across the x-axis.


Part 3
8. Take the image from part 2 and reflect it over the y-axis into Quadrant 3.

9. Label this third image correctly. List the ordered pairs of this image.

10. Compare the ordered pairs of your pre-image and the reflections from #5 and #8. If the
ordered pairs of your pre-image are (x, y), write down the rule for reflecting a shape across the x-
axis and then the y-axis.

11. The double reflection across the x-axis and then the y-axis (in #5 and #8) yields the same
image as what other transformation?


Part 4

12. You need to add 2 more polygons to complete your picture. Reflect each shape into the
three other quadrants. Add color to form a “view from a kaleidoscope.” You may color the
graph paper or copy the shapes onto a white sheet of paper and then color them.

13. In your own words explain how a kaleidoscope works.
