About the Workshop
It’s All About Communicating - Presented by Ann Greer and Associate
This workshop is highly interactive, and includes:
Half a day devoted to the background of communication including:
o The lifestyle and cultural experiences of people who have severe communication
impairments and how this impacts on someone’s capacity to communicate
o Some theory on how to communicate and how to assist others to communicate
with the individual
o How to interpret the individual’s gestures and behaviour as communication
The second half of the day is a practical session. This involves participants in designing
and developing some communication aides for use with the person they are supporting.
Learning outcomes:
Each participant will:
i. have an increased understanding of the many ways that people with severe
communication impairments can communicate
ii. have increased skills in communicating effectively with people with a severe
communication impairment
iii. further increase their skill base so that they can identify a range of low-tech
strategies that will assist in communicating with people with severe
communication impairments
iv. develop a practical tool(s) to take back for use with an individual
Who is the Workshop For?
This workshop will be highly relevant to those who have input into the design and delivery of
support arrangements. It has been developed as part of the Disability Services Queensland
(DSQ), Strengthening Non-Government Organisations – Workforce Development Initiative.* The
workshop is free for all non-government organisations, funded by DSQ – including workers,
managers, committee members and volunteers.
*The Strengthening Non-Government Organisation – Workforce Development is one of a
number of initiatives designed to deliver on Disability Services Queensland’s (DSQ’s) strategic
objective of strengthening service delivery through enhancing the capacity of non-government
organisations (NGOs).
About the Presenters
Ann Greer is one of the most experienced workers and presenters in the area of supporting
people with disabilities to develop alternative communication, especially when there is an
associated challenging behaviour, as is frequently the case. This workshop comes out of fifteen
years experience in working with a range of people who appear to have no communication
systems, study, workshop presentations and conference presentations. Ann has studied with
Gary Lavigna and Tom Willis from the Institute of Applied Behavioural Analysis in Los Angeles,
Rosie Crossley from Deal in Melbourne and is an accredited instructor/assessor in Facilitated
Communication. Her long term experience in working closely with many individuals who are
labelled as having severe communication impairment has offered her the gift of insight and
learning that can only come from those who experience the frustration of communicating much
without ever uttering a word and who are largely ignored until their utterances become
behavioural roars.
Associate – Ann will be joined by a guest facilitator who also has significant experience in
working with people with severe communication impairments.
