COMIC STRIP SCALE DRAWING
Step 1: Choose a frame from a colored comic strip.
Step 2: Choose a piece paper appropriate for your comic frame. YOU MAY NOT USE
POSTER BOARD. You will need to have a border of at least one-inch on all sides of
your drawing. (*Unless you receive approval from the teacher.). Your border may differ
on each side. You may have extra unused paper on the bottom and/or a side(s), but you
must have at least a one inch border on each side. You will want to maximize the space
of your paper. (This will be your scale factor of your comic to your drawing.
Step 3: Draw a grid of squares on your comic. (You may use cm or inches) (Suggested
lengths are 1 cm or .5 cm or ¼ inch squares on your cartoon.)Make a grid of squares
to maximize the space of the your choice of paper. You will need to determine the size
of these squares
Step 4: Label each column on your comic with letters A-Z, and each row of comic with
numbers 1, 2, 3, … Label your corresponding columns and rows on your paper. Now,
transfer only what you see in each square from your comic to your corresponding
square on your piece of paper.
Step 5:. Color you comic using the techniques from our visiting artist.
Erase and make grid line lighter.
Work left to right; top to bottom if right handed (right to left, top to bottom if left handed.)
Value shading
o Layer your colors (color left/right; up/down; diagonally)
o Work light to dark
o More experienced front to back
Brain
o Right side = artistic side
o Left = linguistic
o So, when working, you shouldn’t really be talking for you creative side of your
brain to work.
Step 6: GLUE your comic on the front of your scaled drawing. Write your name and the scale
factor used on the back of your drawing. Also, determine the percent by which you
increased your comic. Write this percentage on the back of your comic also.
Your grade will be based on your ability to follow the directions and do your best work. This
project is worth 40 points and is due on or before Friday, April 16, 2010.
