MEDICATION
This winter has been the worst on record for snowfall as well as record numbers of fevers, coughs,
colds, runny noses, and sore throats. It seems like we have had it all in every room. In an effort
to keep all our children safe, we have started the practice of having all medications kept in the
front office in a locked cabinet. All authorizations to administer medication must be signed and
current Per the state of Wisconsin we are not allowed to keep any medication over one (1) week

SUNSCREEN
Believe it or not, spring is here and summer is right around the corner! This year Bear Cub plans
to address the issue of sunscreen a little differently. In the past all of our parents would bring in
p y( )
sunscreen for their child/children. Our teachers would then spend as much as thirty (30) or forty y
(40) minutes making sure they had the right sunscreen matched to the right child, checking from
room to room for sibling sunscreen and applying first one, then the other, then the next, and
right down the line. Sooner or later through the summer the child's name label would be
unreadable and eventually even fall off altogether. This year Bear Cub will supply each teacher
with a brand name sunscreen for their classroom.
There will be a charge of $3.00 per child to each
family to take care of the entire sunscreen season
(we apply sunscreen from April through
September). If your child/children has any special
allergies and cannot use a brand name sunscreen,
please let me know and I will be happy to
make other arrangements. Hunter Vincent

Understanding Biting in a Childcare Environment
You pick up your toddler from Bear Cub and notice a purple bruise on his/her
hand. h find
h d You then f d a note in their cubbie informing you that one of their
h bb f h f h
classmates bit them! Biting is one of the most troublesome behaviors from a
parent and provider perspective. This is true whether your child is the aggressor or
the victim. However, biting is very common behavior from the time children start
teething, through the toddler years. Toddlers are easily overwhelmed with feelings
of anger and frustration and biting is a powerful way to release these strong
feelings. Young children are impulsive, they are not able to stop and think about
the consequences of their actions, and their verbal skills are limited. When they
can't use words to express themselves, they often resort to physical
aggression. Children do not bite out of dislike of a particular classmate, often
they have strong feelings of caring for the victim and simply cannot express
themselves. Infants may be teething. When their gums are inflamed, they may find
that biting relieves some discomfort. Bear Cub recognizes that biting is a normal
behavior, therefore the biter is not punished. We separate the biter from the other
child, and ask the biter to participate in caring for the victim by bringing ice, offering
a hug, and encouraging the biter to "say sorry" to their classmate. We try our best
hild
to prevent children f biting by idi d i i i for h
from bi i b providing many toys and activities f them to
release pent‐up emotions and frustration. We are consistently working with our
children to learn to verbally express themselves. When infants are teething we
have cool teethers or rubber rings available. Bear Cub policy on biting is to inform
parents of both children about the incident without disclosing the name of the child
involved.
