Notes on completion of the Form


 1.    Period of study
       The academic year at the University of Essex is divided into three terms of ten weeks. The calendar for
       2011-12 is:
                    Compulsory Orientation*            Sunday 2 October – Sunday 9 October 2011
                    Autumn term                        Monday 10 October – Friday 16 December 2011
                    Spring term                        Monday 16 January – Friday 23 March 2012
                    Summer term                        Tuesday 23 April – Friday 29 June 2012

                      *Full year/Autumn term only students

      There is a compulsory Orientation Programme commencing on the Wednesday before the start of the
      Spring term (11 January) for Spring/Summer term only students. You must attend this programme.

      Late arrivals may not be admitted to the programme.
      Applications can be considered for
      (a)     a full year of 39 weeks (including two four-week vacations and an orientation week)
      (b)     “semester” periods – either the Autumn term or both the Spring and Summer terms
      An Autumn and Spring term option is also available but only for students whose academic year begins in
      April. This means only students from universities in Japan.



2.    Choice of Courses (please refer to the Course Directory and the on-line Module Directory)
      (a) You are asked to make a preliminary selection of courses. You will have the opportunity to discuss
          your choices when you arrive at Essex. Many applicants make changes to their courses choice before
          embarking on their studies.
      (b) You should note that some of the courses listed in the Course Directory may not be available and
          additional courses may be offered. If a particular course is essential to you, please place an
          asterisk against it.
      (c) Your choice may be restricted by timetable clashes or because a particular course is full.
      (d) Where prerequisites are specified, you should ensure that details of the appropriate courses you have
          followed are included with your application.


3.    Current Study
      Please list all the courses you are taking at present. We also need a transcript of your previous study to-
      date, listing credits, grades and details of any CEEB/SAT scores. If English is not your first language, we
      will need a current TOEFL or IELTS score. Please note that the UK Border Agency no longer allows us to
      accept paper based TOEFL. We require:
      IELTS - 6.0
      TOEFL - 207 (Computer-based), 76 (Internet-based)


4.    Academic References
      To complete your application, we need two academic references. Please ask each of your referees to send
      their references directly to the address given on the final page of your application form. We suggest that
      you provide your referees with stamped addressed envelopes for this purpose.

    UK. VISA APPLICATIONS CAN TAKE MANY WEEKS. IF YOU COME TO THE UK AS A STUDENT
    VISITOR, YOU NEED TO ALLOW TIME FOR THE IMMIGRATION LETTER PROVIDED BY US TO BE

   You must follow the Rules of Assessment for all courses that you undertake.
   You will be required to take four courses per term.
   Please indicate with an * if your acceptance of a place is conditional upon enrolment on a particular course(s).
   Courses only run during the terms stated in the on-line module directory – eg, it is not possible to take a
    Spring Term course if you are only at Essex for the Autumn Term. However, in most cases the relevant parts

Language Courses

Please note that registration for any language course (including IA740-4-FY, Advanced Practical English) specified
in this document is only PROVISIONAL. To confirm your registration for a language course, you MUST see the
relevant Course Supervisor during Week One. There are HELP DESK SESSIONS held in the Department of
Language and Linguistics, and at these you can be given assistance with matters such as the names of Course
Supervisors, and where to find them.

Please also note that for IA740-4-FY, Advanced Practical English, there is an entry test, and that you must gain a
pass at the requisite level (before your registration for this course can be confirmed). You may take this course if
you have an IELTS score of 6 or a TOEFL 540.
