I. Welcome
Dottie Gutaj, RN, BSN, OCN®, Coordinator conducted the Survivorship, Quality of Life and
Rehabilitation SIG meeting at the ONS 31st Conference in Boston, MA. She welcomed all members
and guests to the meeting. She introduced herself and Nadine Wampler RN, MSN, OCN® as the
Coordinator-Elect. Each member and/or guest introduced themselves and discussed where they
worked and/or lived.
II. Approval of 2005 Congress Minutes
The minutes from the ONS 30th Conference in Orlando, Florida were reviewed and approved.
III. Discussion Related to How to Achieve More Knowledge About Our SIG
Dottie discussed the SIG’s “Strategic Plan” giving emphasizing on past goals. She talked about
weaknesses in the past years related to the small commitment of our SIG members. A questionnaire
was done for the past two years to address these issues. She requested suggestions from the group
of ways our SIG members could become more involved and how our SIG could become more
recognized:
A. Information distributed at the meeting included:
A copy of the Survivorship, Quality of Life & Rehabilitation SIG newsletter.
Survivorship, Quality of Life & Rehabilitation SIG Fact Sheet.
AJN March 2006 Supplement magazine with emphasis on the article “Cancer Survivorship A
First-Person Perspective”.
B. Discussion:
How and when the SIG became three parts: Survivorship, Quality of Life and Rehabilitation
SIG membership as of March 2006 was at 202. This year Dottie has been e-mailing new
members and welcoming them into the SIG.
The SIG Strategic Plan; the purpose of the SIG was discussed.
Institute of Medicine booth initiated by Betty Ferrell is good publicity for SVP SIG. Members
were encouraged to volunteer and inform others to visit the booth. A copy of the AJN March
2006 Supplement Magazine and the SIG Fact Sheet will be handed out at the booth.
C. Volunteers essential:
Dottie talked about the newsletter and the need for volunteers to write for the newspaper. We
try to do three newspapers per year with a specific topic related to “survivorship, quality of life
or rehabilitation. Anyone may submit an article for the newspaper and they do not need to be
a member of our SIG.
We need an editor for the newspaper.
We need members to consider submitting an application to run for the Coordinator-Elect for
2007. One member of the SIG group discussed the benefits of being a SIG leader such as:
50% off new publication
Travel, 2 nights per diem/hotel at Congress (must attend SIG Leadership Orientation
Workshop)
Registration discount for Congress or Institutes of Learning
Flight reimbursement
Leadership Opportunities where there is “no greater reward”
IV. SIG Strategic Planning
Ideas for the direction of the SIG were discussed by numerous members of the SIG
group. Some of the suggestions are as follows:
Awareness about research grants for breast cancer and survivorship.
Doing an interdisciplinary project related to survivorship with other SIGs or with other health
care professionals and presenting the project to ANA, Oncologists, ASCO and other meetings.
Doing a presentation for 2007 Congress. Suggested Topics included “Nuts and Bolts of
Starting a Survivor Clinic Paradigm” or “What Cancer Survivorship Really Is” or “Rehabilitation
and It’s Role in Cancer Survivorship”
It was suggested to have Survivorship topics be the Clinical Hot Topics at the 2007 Congress or
at 2006 IOL. Breast Cancer Survivorship with shared stories was one suggestion. Having
cancer survivors share stories about different phases such as what was helpful, not helpful,
sexuality issues, physical issues and rehabilitation issues.
Having a Steering Council to talk about “Late Effects of Treatment & Survivorship” and take this
program to other Chapters and even consider doing a CD like the Radiation SIG.
Working with the Radiation SIG on “Survivorship after Radiation Treatment”.
If anyone is going to submit a topic to be presented at 2007 Congress it must be submitted by
May 21, 2006.
Laura Fennimore (as a member of the Liaison Panel for ONS) gave suggestions of topics for
Congress 2007 such as “Nurse Survivors” “Helpful Ways With Peers”, “Oncology Issues” and
“Survivorship Clinics-How to be Included”.
Updating the poster and displaying the SIG Survivorship, Quality of Life and Rehabilitation
poster of the fall IOL and at 2007 Congress was a suggestion.
Many issues that were discussed and we will continue to follow-up and see who is willing to
work on certain projects and presentations this year and in the coming years. Nadine and Dottie
will be contacting members to see where there interest is and what we can do out of this long
list of worthwhile suggestions.
V. Instructional Sessions about Survivorship
2006 Congress Instructional Session “Your Patient Completed Treatment: What Comes Next”
presented by Susan Leigh, RN, BSN, Nancy Houlihan, RN, MA, AOCN® and Richard Boyajian,
RN, MSN, ANP. The presenters at the meeting were complemented for their presentation and
there was discussion about the presentation and how it made others more aware of cancer
survivorship.
2006 Institute of Learning session “Transition from Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: What
Oncology Nurses Need to Know”
VI. Recognition of Volunteers
Dottie mentioned that she had sent a Certificates of Appreciation this year to:
Jean Madden-past Editor. Jean had resigned this year due to school and other
commitments.
VII. Adjournment
Dottie made a motion that the meeting be adjourned due to the allotted time for the
meeting was over. The meeting was seconded by Nadine Wampler, motion carried.
