Shopping
With the demise of the local shop, families living miles apart and cuts in statutory
support, many older people have great difficulty getting their weekly shopping.
Transport links are difficult and carrying heavy shopping home impossible for
many people. Internet shopping requires the use of a computer and debit or
credit card; two things many older people do not have. Care and Repair (Stroud)
Ltd. are working on a scheme to help older people to get their shopping delivered
in an affordable and efficient way.
Working with Somerfield’s supermarkets in Dursley, we have piloted an Internet
style shopping service without the Internet! A written list is collected from people
on a set day. The lists are taken to the supermarket where supermarket staff put
up the shopping. Shopping is stored by the supermarket until it is collected and
delivered to the client. Arriving at the client’s home, the deliverer helps to put the
shopping away and makes sure the client has everything they need.
The cost for this service will be £5.00 per delivery. This is in line with current
Internet shopping charges.
We are planning to use domestic helpers from our “Helping Hands” service to
deliver the shopping. All our Helping Hands are CRB checked and registered with
Care and Repair (Stroud) Ltd. Have a look at the Helping Hands section on our

We need a motivated volunteer to help us to develop this service. It is an
opportunity for someone to really make a difference to local older people’s lives.
Working from the Care and Repair office in Slad Road, or our Community Shop in
Dursley, the job would involve liaising with our own staff and that of local
statutory and voluntary sector organisations and local older people. Your own
work station within the Care and Repair office would be available and also full use
of the office equipment and telephone system. Expenses would be payable.
