Dear Prospective Student:

Thank you for your interest in Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School. If you are a
highly motivated student who is curious about the world around you and are interested in pursuing a
challenging high school experience that integrates District of Columbia Public Schools curriculum with
architecture, construction and engineering technologies, then Phelps is the perfect place for you. Phelps
offers a comprehensive high school experience and specialized instructional opportunities in the architecture,
construction and engineering industries. At Phelps, you might design, or build your own home, using
technology that may already be a part of your everyday life. You will also use your creativity and imagination
to achieve your academic and career goals.

Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School offer a diverse curriculum to meet the needs
of every student. You will prepare for college through a strong academic program, which includes honors
and advanced placement courses to earn college credit. In addition, you’ll prepare for the professional
workforce by increasing your skills through hands-on and rigorous instruction and keen study and
organizational skills. Every staff member will support you to ensure that your educational experience is
maximized and that you explore your dreams and are prepared to succeed.

Phelps Architecture, Construction, and Engineering High School is a comprehensive high school established
to prepare students for higher education and careers in today’s society. Phelps will be located at 704 26 th
Street, NE., Washington DC 20002. All District of Columbia students are eligible to apply and attend Phelps.
The rigorous, yet innovative curriculum, concentrates on the architecture, construction and engineering
industries.

Our Promise
Phelps promises to advance student achievement by engaging students to learn in an exciting action-oriented
atmosphere. Phelps graduates will not only meet and exceed regional averages in test performance; but they
will also gain a broader range of technical, social and personal skills. Phelps graduates will possess:

     A firm grounding in traditional liberal arts disciplines;
     Basic knowledge in the architecture, construction and engineering industries;

            o Iron and sheet metal working,
            o Brick masonry,
            o Cement masonry and concrete finishing,
            o Heating Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC),

            o Heavy equipment operating, or
            o Project management/building construction.

           * “Carpentry” includes new construction, pile drivers, interior systems crafts people, and millwrights -- especially for
           power plants and manufacturing facilities.




Equipped with these skills and experiences, Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering graduates will
be literate in both liberal arts and the construction industry discipline of their choice. This will fully prepare
each student to pursue a post-secondary education and/or a career.

                              Important Admissions Dates



                     Open House – Saturday, November 14, 2009- 10:00AM- 1:00PM

STEP 1 – Application Process – Completed applications must be post marked or delivered by
January 29, 2010. Attention: Admissions, 704 26th St. N.E., Washington, DC 20002. If you have
questions or need support in completing the application, see your school administrators, counselors or contact
Beverly McNairy at 202-729-4360.

STEP 2 – Assessment Process – Writing and Math Admissions Examinations –Applicants with the
highest total scores in the areas of: GPA, attendance, and letters of recommendation will be scheduled for a
writing and math examination.

STEP 3 - Interview Process

Interview Dates

     Interviews will be scheduled after application and testing review.

STEP 4 – Acceptance Process – Letters are sent to all students who are accepted to attend Phelps High
School, during School Year 2010-2011. The Acceptance letter will contain information about the Summer
Bridge attendance dates for both 9th and 10th Graders entering Phelps High School.

STEP 5 – Waitlist Process – Students who are pending the submission of their final report card will be
placed on the waiting list.

NOTE: All students must attend our Summer Bridge Program dates TBA.

Admission Requirements

Phelps Architecture Construction and Engineering High School will recruit students for the 9th grade from
across the District of Columbia and therefore, Phelps does not have an assigned attendance zone. Applicants
are scored on a scale from 1 – 35 points, with three (5) bonus points earned for demonstrated related
background activities and completion of the Parent/Guardian Survey. As an applicant, you will be selected
and scored based on the following categories.

Completed applications must be post marked by January 29, 2010.Attention: Admissions, 704 26th St.
N.E., Washington, DC 20002. Applicants with the highest total scores in the areas of: GPA, attendance and
letters of recommendation will be scheduled for a writing and math examination.(See page 8 for testing
dates.) The bonus points will be applied to your overall final score. If you have questions or need support in

A strong interest in the architecture, construction, and engineering industries is preferred among applicants;
however, the most important attribute of the prospective Phelps student is an enthusiasm to learn in a unique
and rigorous environment and a commitment to become an academic scholar.


Note: Incoming 9th grade applicants must provide official 8th DC BAS Scores, 7th grade DC CAS Scores and
a first semester 8th grade report card. Incoming 10th grade applicants must provide official 9th Grade DC BAS
Scores, 8th Grade DC CAS Scores, a first semester 9th grade report card. All accepted applicants must submit
a copy of their final report card in June 2010, as a basis for completing their class schedule prior to attending
Phelps Summer Bridge Program 2010.

Part III. B   Math Examination – (5) points total

                     This exam will be taken onsite– See page 8 for testing dates


Part IV.      Recommendation Forms – (5) points – Each applicant must provide three (3)
              recommendation forms provided in the application packet. Two (2) must be completed by
              school personnel at the applicant’s current or previous school within the last two (2) years.
              One (1) must be completed by a community leader such as a coach, mentor, community based
              organization director or a faith-based organization. Phelps will average the three (3)
              evaluators’ scores and apply the final score to the application.

Part V.       Personal Interview – (5) points – Interviewers will assess each applicant on a scale of 1 – 5.
              Phelps will average the three (3) interviewers’ scores and apply the final score to the
              application. Interviews will be approximately 15 minutes in length.

Part VI.      Bonus Points – (5) points total – Bonus points may be given to an applicant if he/she can
              provide a record of student related background activities, which can include extracurricular
              and community services (3 points) and/or a completed parent/guardian survey (2 points).

applicant’s current or previous school within the last two (2) years (Math and Language Arts Teacher) and
one (1) must be completed by a community leader or another person of your choice.
