What is the Internet?

The Internet is a worldwide network of computers that allows individual and business users

around the world to share information and other resources and to conduct business

transactions. More specifically, the Internet is a worldwide interconnected network of networks.

Each computer connected directly to the Internet, called a host, can have a number of other

computers connected to it.

The World Wide Web, commonly called the Web, is a subset of the Internet that supports a

vast collection of documents that combine text and pictures, sound, and even animation and

video. These documents are called Web pages and are stored in Web sites all over the world.

1. WWW means _____________ _____________ ___________. This is the most dynamic

service on the Internet.

The method for connecting to the Internet using a regular telephone line is known as dial-up

access. Dial-up access works just like a standard phone connection. To use dial-up connection,

a computer must have a modem, which is a card or device that converts a computer’s digital

data to an analog signal that can be sent over telephone lines.

2. A Dial-up modem connection needs an Internet Service Provider (ISP). It is only connected

while dialed in. It uses a regular _________________ line.

3. A company that provides Internet access for homes and businesses is called an Internet

Service Provider (ISP). An example of an Internet Service Provider (ISP) would be:

AOL Earthlink MSN

________-Zero A___& ___

A high-speed alternative to dial-up access is a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). DSL is significantly

faster than dial-up connection. DSL uses broadband transmission, which means it divides the

telephone wire into separate channels for sending data, receiving data, and transmitting voice

calls. DSL is also a dedicated connection. With a dedicated connection, the computer is always

connected to the Internet.

4. Broadband connection is a _________________________ Internet connection. It uses a

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL).

5. Broadband is faster than ___________________.

Web Sites

The number of pages at a Web site can vary, based on the site’s purpose and the type of

content and services the site provide. A home page is the primary page at a Web site. A site

might include pages of photos, a resume, video or business information.

6. The first page that appears when you launch the Internet, is called the

____________ _____________.

7. Can you change to a new homepage? Yes _____ or No _____

A Web portal, is a special type of Web site that offers a doorway to a wide range of content and

services.

8. Portal Homepages are an initial point of entry to the Web. An example of some common

portal pages would be: ________________, _________________, ________________.

Top-Level Domains

A domain is a computer network connected to the internet. A domain may consist of a

single computer or hundreds of computers networked together. Every computer

connected to the Internet is part of a domain. Most domains use a domain name to make

them easy to identify. The most basic identifier for a domain is its top-level domain.

A computer network connected to the Internet is called a ____________.

Domain names are grouped by top-level domain. The characters that follow the period at

the end of a domain name indicate the top-level domain a Web site belongs to.

.com labyrinth.com

Navigating the Web

One way to navigate the Web is simply by telling your browser which sites you wish to view.

Every page on the Web has a unique identifying address, called a URL. A Uniform Resource

Locator (URL) is essentially an ___________________ for a Web page. URL’s contain several

parts that help your browser find the exact page you are looking for.

URLs – Example of a Web site address are: www.sears.com, www.mapquest.com

Navigating with the Address bar

The most basic control for navigating the Web with Internet Explorer is the address bar. This bar

allows you to type the URL of the Web page you wish to visit. It also lists the most recent Web

sites that have been visited.

The address bar is just one of several shortcuts that help you _________________ to Web sites

more quickly.

AutoComplete

As you type a URL in the address bar, you may see it display some Web addresses in a drop-

down list. This is the AutoComplete feature at

work.

When you start typing the address, you might have

AutoComplete try to finish what you are typing.

AutoComplete keeps track of all the __________ ________ you have visited.

Links

A Link (short for hyperlink) is the most basic tool for Web navigation. A link is essentially an

object on a Web page that points to some other location on the _________page, a

________________ page, or even a different _________ ___________.

A link can take on several forms. It may be _________ on a Web page or an _________ or part

Narrowing a Search

If a search yields too many hits, add additional search words ("narrow" your search).

For example, you might be looking for information on how to knit a baby blanket. Instead of

using “knit” you might add “knit baby blanket” or “knit baby blanket beginners.”

Lesson 4 & 5 Name _______________________________

The Order of Hits

Different search engines usually list the same sites in a different order. There are a few factors

that can affect the order of sites in the search result list. The four common things that affect the

order of hits are:

1. Content of the page. The text on the Web page can make a difference in the order a site is

listed.

2. Search relevance rating. Each search engine has its own system for

rating the relevance of a Web site.

3. Content of the metatag for a page. The homepage of many sites contains a custom

description of the site in a piece of program code.

4. Money$. Some Web sites will pay a search engine to give them a higher position in the hit

list.

Using Favorites/Bookmarks-Ever found a cool website?

Wished you had a way to remember where it was without writing it down? You can put a

bookmark on the Internet as easily as you put one in a book. You can even bookmark as many

websites as you want; there's no limit.

Your list of bookmarks is called your favorites; as in your favorite places to visit on the Internet.

So when you wish to bookmark a page on the Internet, you add it to your favorites.

1. Open the Internet. While you are browsing the Internet and the page you wish to save is

showing on your screen.

2. Using you mouse, move the arrow to the top of the left top part of the screen where it says

Favorites. When the arrow is on the word Favorites click the mouse. This will cause the

Favorites menu to appear.

3. At this point you should now see a menu. The top section of the list contains commands used

to manage your list of bookmarks. The remaining items are favorite websites that have already

been bookmarked on your computer.

4. Notice that the name of the page you wished to save is already displayed in the line labeled

Name. This is the name that the person who created that page uses to refer to that page. You

can use this for the name of your bookmark or you can name your bookmark something else.
