Derby Girls Out & About!
T he first of many Peoria Push Derby Dames canoe trips was on a less than
perfect last Saturday of September. Starting off on a sunny, but chilly morn-
ing, we all carpooled and caravanned north up to the Starved Rock area to
Fox Creek. We signed up and set off in the big yellow school bus to be tak-
en to our launch
site 12 miles
down stream.
Ten of us, in five
canoes set off at
a turtle’s pace.
Although we
were not canoe-
ing derby style,
three of the five
canoes did tip;
two by accident and the third because
the un-named crazy lady (...ahem,
Josie) who did more swimming than
canoeing kept tipping herself in. (Did
anyone notice the 8 inch bruise on the
back of her shin? Yep, canoeing.) You
never know what a chilly sunny morn-
ing in September will turn into, and
unfortunately for us the sun disap-
peared for most of our trip. The last of
our group made it back to base just as
the sprinkles of rain were getting pretty
steady. Already wet from tipping, plus
the drizzling rain, we were all shivering
