                   Modulation

Modulation – Superimposing information
(audio, data, video) onto a radio signal

Un-modulated radio carrier Carrier modulated with audio

How radio signals carry information

• Continuous Wave (CW or
  Morse Code)

• Amplitude Modulation (AM)

• Frequency Shift-Keying (FSK
  Examples: Radio teletype)

• Frequency Modulation (FM)

  Radio Propagation Characteristics

• HF Wavelengths (160 – 10 meters)
  - Generally utilizes skywave propagation
  - Affected by solar activity
• VHF Wavelengths (6 meters – 2 meters)
  - Generally utilize line-of-sight
  - Affected very little by solar activity
• UHF Wavelengths (70cm and shorter)
  - Generally utilize light-of-sight propagation
  - Affected much by terrain, buildings

                    Athens Amateur Radio Club, Inc.
       Radio Station WWV

• Transmits on 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 20 Mhz

  standard
  frequencies

• If you can
  hear WWV,
  the HF bands
  are open Fort Collins, CO

  Opposes BPL

   Why ?
               Athens Amateur Radio Club, Inc.
 Broadband Over Power Lines (BPL)

   BPL is a polluting
  technology and an
  inferior technology

• Pollutes radio frequencies
  between 1.7 and 80 Mhz

• Speeds of 300k to 1 Mbps
  (near DSL speed, but is
  “shared” connection); slower
  than cable or Fios service

                       Athens Amateur Radio Club, Inc.
    WiMax – The Superior Technology

• Non-polluting because it has Popular Mechanics, Dec 2004, p30
    its own frequencies (2500 to
    2900 Mhz)

• Currently being built on
    existing cell towers

• Mobile coverage same as
    ordinary cell coverage; 1 to
    4 Mbps

• Can hand-over data stream
    as you travel at highway
    speeds up to 60 MPH

                           Athens Amateur Radio Club, Inc.
       BPL Electric Meters

 One legitimate use
of BPL technology…

Smart Power Grid

             Athens Amateur Radio Club, Inc.
               BPL Electric Meters

• Reads Meters Automatically

• Supposedly Does Not Interfere
    With Radio Communications

• Allows Power Company to
    Remotely Control Meter

• Power Can Be Shut off
    Remotely

• Possibly Susceptible To
    Hacking?
