RUGBY LEAGUE IN SCOTLAND

The story in Scotland began way back in 1909 when the visiting Kangaroos played against a ‘Select Team’
in Glasgow. This match was followed by another in Edinburgh in 1911. However, Rugby League did not
take hold at this time as the game of football boomed across the country.

From the sport's earliest years, there have been Scottish players in Rugby League, including Great Britain
internationals such as Dave Valentine, who captained GB to World Cup Victory in 1954, David Rose and
the stylish fullback George Fairbairn.

The rise of Rugby League in Scotland has been significant in recent years:

1997…
With the popularity of Super League, the first domestic league is established north of the border.

2000 & 2002…
The Challenge Cup, Rugby League’s most historic and prestigious competition brings its final to Scotland
and Murrayfield Stadium.

2008…
Scotland secure their first World Cup win, defeating Fiji at the tournament in Australia.

2009…
‘Magic Weekend’ : a full round of Super League fixtures is played at Murrayfield Stadium, attracting
60,000 supporters and raising the profile of Rugby League in Scotland to new levels.

2010…
‘Magic Weekend’ returns to Murrayfield as we look forward to the Home Nations and the European Cup
also coming to Scotland.
SUPPORTERS ALL OVER THE WORLD

In 2008 the Great Britain team separated into the Home Nations. A wave of national pride and support
came for the Scottish players who would now be wearing our country’s colours with pride at the World
Cup in Australia.

Good luck messages arrived from all around the globe as the team made history by recording the first
ever ‘Scotland’ victory in the tournament. The pride and passion shown by our boys ensured they left
their mark with the ex-pat community who turned out in force to support them during each game, and
at all times in between. In fact, the Canberra Burns Club hosted a welcome dinner attended by over 150
Aussie-Scots in what was an incredible evening so far from home! A strong connection remains through
the Scots now playing in the Australian Rugby League.

Returning to home soil the players have seen the game growing in popularity.

SCOTLAND RUGBY LEAGUE – GROWING FROM GRASSROOTS

Over the past four years the Youth Rugby League in
Scotland has grown rapidly from a competition between
several local clubs to one now spanning six regions across
the country.

In 2009 SRL registered over 200 club players in its youth
development system, stemming from primary and
secondary schools programmes that coach in excess of
3,000 participants annually through our Champion Schools
competition.

In the adult game, 10 clubs across the country now compete in the Scottish Rugby League Conference –
representing over 600 players.
