It appeals to me in part because I also work for Xcel Energy, a company that is literally connected to the communities it serves and very dependent on their health and well-being. From a corporate perspective, a strong and healthy Chamber is the heartbeat of a community, representing the collective interests of Chamber members. And it accomplishes its mission in many ways. Through eco- nomic development efforts, education and networking opportunities—just to name a few—the Chamber is 2010 Board Member fundamental to ensuring this area’s vitality. Xcel Energy has always recognized that value, which is why the Michelle Swanson, company has been a Chamber member for more than 30 years. Xcel Energy I think especially of our work together on the proposed Southwest Light Rail Transit, which promises to greatly enhance public transportation in the area. The Chamber has been very helpful in bringing together a variety of stakeholders, including corporations, city officials and other citizens. I think the Chamber especially shines when it comes to public policy issues like these. In particular, I appreciate the opportunity afforded by the Chamber to speak with policy makers in an open and friendly environment, which in my view is exactly how government is supposed to work. From a personal perspective, the Chamber is equally energizing. I’ve met so many interesting people during my tenure on the board. I’ve been intrigued by the entrepreneurs, inspired by the public servants and entertained by the new friends I’ve made. In particular, I’ve enjoyed the member luncheons and participating in the golf tournaments. There is nothing like playing 18 holes of golf to make new connections—even when your game needs a little work. Or perhaps I should say especially when your game needs a little work. It’s great to know that these are people I can call on for advice or encouragement. The simple act of joining the Chamber increases a person’s networking potential considerably. Plus, it’s a lot of fun. As our economy continues to improve, let’s not forget to show our appreciation to the Chamber. It’s always there—through good times and bad—as a catalyst to a vibrant community. Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) is a major U.S. electricity and natural gas company that provides a comprehensive portfolio of energy- related products and services to 3.4 million electricity customers and 1.9 million natural gas customers through its regulated operat- ing companies in eight Western and Midwestern states. Company headquarters are located in Minneapolis. More information is available at xcelenergy.com. WE’d LoVE To HEAr froM YoU! ATTENTIoN CHAMBEr MEMBErS! The Chamber’s Annual Golden Apple Awards recognize individuals in our community who contribute to the quality of education through service, projects and individual achievements. This year’s recipients were chosen by the Chamber’s vol- unteerRecognition Committee based on the nomination forms submitted by their peers or co-workers. The 2010 Golden Apple Recipients who were recognized at the April General Membership Luncheon are: Tawnda Bickford, Psychology Professor at Hennepin Technical College. Tawnda was recognized for Individual Service Achievement. Some of her biggest accomplishments that led to this award were the implementation of a career/life focus counseling service for HTC students, several projects for her students (including a meth awareness seminar that over 500 students and community members attended), and a current project to prevent teen and un- planned pregnancy. Julie Holtz (Literacy Teacher Specialist), Lee Thomas (Literacy & Math Teacher Specialist), Suzy Ring (Paraprofessional), Marilyn Hardy (Paraprofessional), Christi Garber (Paraprofessional), Nancy Pau- men (Paraprofessional), and Lynn Starman (Paraprofessional) at Cedar Ridge Elementary School. This group was recognized with the Outstanding Project Award for their work on Reading & Math Pro- grams at their school, including “Power Hour,” “Reading Plus,” and “Razzle Dazzle Readers.” Following the award presentation we heard from David Olson, the President of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Trustees Chair for Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU). David’s presentation included discussion of the MnSCU system and its 32 total facilities. MnSCU teaches over 424,000 students and has the most undergradu- ate degrees. It educates 82% of the states nurses, 52% of our new teachers and 42% of the business graduates. Lions Tap Family Restaurant has been an Eden Prairie landmark for over 50 years. The location of the present restaurant started out as a vegetable stand owned by the Severin Peterson family in 1933. In 1958, after several business changes, the famous hamburgers were introduced. Bert & Bonnie Notermann purchased the business in 1977 and renovated & expanded the building twice to it’s present outline. The Notermann’s also introduced their own process for making the quarter pounders. Fresh ground beef individually patted daily and their own “secret seasoning” are two of the reasons for the hamburgers famous reputation. By all of the awards hanging on the walls, you can see that Lions Tap has won just about every award out there for Best Hamburger in the Twin Cities area. It has also been named one of the Top 500 Restaurants in the U.S.! The Notermann’s feel strongly in giving back to their community. Lions Tap sponsors a large num- ber of youth and adult athletic teams throughout the surrounding area as well as supporting special groups like scouts, 4-H, church events and gives donations to non-profits to name a few. Also important is the pride we take in our “green” environment. Over 95% of all of our waste stream is recycled due to our newest venture – Organics Recycling. Lions Tap staff also are involved in our Adopt-A-Highway project twice a year on Spring Road. We are proud of our 50+ friendly, dedicated, well trained employees. Our special E-club and Cub Club, which have become 15,000 members strong, enjoy wonderful activities, contests and discounts. We are also very excited about the continued success of our bottled ‘secret’ seasoning which is now available to the public. The EP Chamber of Commerce is a great source of information to the businesses and the community at large as well as to visitors to our area. It is dedicated to making our business community strong and noticeable to the public sector. Lions Tap looks forward to an upward trend in the economy to keep the business population strong in Eden Prairie and hopes to see growth in the job market here. Pride in our community from those who live and work here! We hope for more businesses and the public to become partners in the “Going Green” effort.
