 1     SCOPE

 1.1   Summary
 This Interface Requirements Document (IRD) defines the interface for the transmission
 of test data between the ASOS Controller Equipment Information Display System (ACE-
 IDS) and the NAS information Display System (NIDS). This IRD has been prepared in
 accordance with FAA-STD-025F.

3     INTERFACE REQUIREMENTS/DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS
Note: The following is included to simplify the understanding of the terminology
used in this IRD:
       a. The NIDS system with respect to this interface is comprised of three basic
           components. They are as follows:
               1.       The NIDS system display application - This application is the
                        heart of the NIDS and controls the displaying of data on the
                        NIDS system display pages.
               2.       The NIDS ACE-IDS text interface application – This
                        application controls the interface requirements between the
                        external systems and the NIDS system display application.
               3.       The NIDS monitoring/configuration application – this
                        application monitors the health of the system and is used to
                        configure most if not all of the NIDS interface applications.

3.1 General Requirements/Characteristics
This IRD describes the text interface between the ASOS Controller Equipment
Information Display System (ACE-IDS) and the NIDS.
The NIDS ACE-IDS text interface application transfers text data between the ACE-IDS
and the NIDS. The NIDS ACE-IDS text interface application shall[FPR001] be a bi-
directional RS232 interface. When an ACE-IDS text product is received by the NIDS,
the data shall[FPR002] be stored and dissemination throughout the NIDS in accordance with
the NIDS specification. The data shall[FPR003] be displayed on the NIDS in accordance
with the NIDS specification.

The NIDS ACE-IDS text interface shall[FPR004] transmit NIDS text data to the ACE-IDS
for display purposes. The NIDS ACE-IDS text interface Connectivity Point shall[FPR005]
be the redundant Server or an NIDS workstation. See Figures 3.1-1 and 3.1-2.

3.1.1 Security Requirements/Characteristics


The NIDS ACE-IDS text interface configuration shall[FPR006] use the NIDS System level
password or the NIDS Maintenance level password to gain access to the configuration
parameters for change. When entering a password the NIDS ACE-IDS text interface
application shall[FPR007] allow access function to be canceled. The NIDS ACE-IDS text
interface application shall[FPR008] allow the user to exit the editing functions without
saving the changes or impacting the operational capabilities of the interface. No logging
of password entry or failed attempts is required of this interface. No further integrated
security requirements are imposed beyond those native to the NIDS.
This interface will pose no security risks for the FAA for the following reasons; the ACE-
IDS interfacing with the NIDS are FAA owned, and have already gone through security
certification. The ACE-IDS to NIDS ACE-IDS text interface application is a RS232
interface that is hardwired together in the same building. The NIDS will go through
security certification as part of the test effort required to deploy the NIDS. This interface
provides advisory weather products and text data between the two systems for use by the
Air Traffic Controllers.

3.2   Functional Requirements/Design Characteristics

3.2.1 General Service Functional Requirements
The NIDS can be connected to the ACE-IDS in different configurations. The
configurations are as follows:
               1. Figure 3.1-1. ACE-IDS to NIDS Server.
               2. Figure 3.1-2. ACE-IDS to NIDS Workstation.

3.2.2 Application Process and Message Requirement

3.2.2.1   Identification of Each Application Process

3.2.2.1.1 ACE-IDS Application Process
The ACE-IDS Application Process transmits advisory weather products and text data to
the NIDS for use by the Air Traffic Controllers using the NIDS. The ACE-IDS
Application Process receives and distribute advisory weather products and text data from
the NIDS for use by the AIR Traffic Controllers using the ACE-IDS.

3.2.2.1.2 NIDS Application Process
The NIDS ACE-IDS text interface application process shall[FPR009] receive and store text
data from the ACE-IDS interface for distribution and display purposes. The NIDS ACE-
IDS text interface application process shall[FPR010] transmit text data to the ACE-IDS for
distribution and display purposes.

3.2.2.2 Application Process Capability Requirements

3.2.2.2.1 The ACE-IDS text Application Process Capability Requirements are as
          follows:
       a. Properly format selected data for transmission to the NIDS;
       b. Transmit selected text data to the NIDS;
       c. Receive selected test data from the NIDS.

3.2.2.2.2 The NIDS ACE-IDS text Interface Application Capability Requirements are as
          follows:
       a. The NIDS ACE-IDS Text Interface Application shall[FPR011] receive and
          transmit data over a RS232 interface.
       b. The NIDS ACE-IDS Text Interface Application configuration menu
          shall[FPR012] have an entry in it for selecting which NIDS pages are sent to the
          ACE-IDS.
       c. The NIDS ACE-IDS Text Interface Application configuration menu
          shall[FPR013] have an entry in it for translating the current NIDS page number
          to a page number of 9999 or less before transmission to the ACE-IDS.
       d. The NIDS ACE-IDS Text Interface shall[FPR014] be able to send to the ACE-
          IDS up to a minimum of 9999 pages of data.
       e. The NIDS ACE-IDS Text Interface Application shall[FPR015] format the data
          on the page in accordance with table 3.2.2.3.1-1 data for transmission to the
          ACE-IDS. If there is one notepad on the page, column 1 applies, 2 notepads
          on the page, column two applies, if there are more than 2 notepads on the
          page, column 3 applies.
       f. The NIDS ACE-IDS Text Interface Application configuration menu
          shall[FPR016] have an entry in it for selecting which NIDS page the ACE-IDS
          data is displayed on.
       g. The NIDS ACE-IDS Text Interface Application shall[FPR017] be capable of
          defining up to a minimum of 9999 pages for the display of ACE-IDS data.
       h. The NIDS ACE-IDS Text interface application shall[FPR018] process data
          transmitted over the interface in accordance with table 3.2.2.3.2-1.
       i. Only the text part of the message shall[FPR019] be displayed on the NIDS
          display page.
       j. The information contained in table 3.2.2.3.2-1 is for a single message. If more
          than one message is sent in one transmitted ACE-IDS page, each message
          shall[FPR020] be displayed on the same NIDS page so that it is distinguishable
          from the previous message.
       k. When a newer page of text data is transmitted from the ACE-IDS to the
          NIDS, the NIDS shall[FPR021] overwrite the existing text data on the page.
       l. The NIDS shall[FPR022] filter the incoming message based on the notepad text
          name contained in the message.

      m. Each filtered message shall[FPR023] be displayed on its own NIDS system
         display page.
      n. The NIDS shall[FPR024] have a configuration menu that allows the notepad text
         name to be entered as a configuration parameter. In the configuration menu,
         the notepad text name shall[FPR025] also have a user defined NIDS page
         number associated with it. This page number shall[FPR026] be the page that the
         NIDS displays the text data on.
      o. The NIDS ACE-IDS text interface application shall[FPR027] receive and store
         properly formatted incoming ACE-IDS messages for distribution and display
         purposes.
      p. Improper formatted messages shall[FPR028] be discarded.
      q. The NIDS ACE-IDS text interface application shall[FPR029] be configurable
         through an executable program and by external application such as a system
         monitoring/configuration application. The monitoring/configuration
         application shall[FPR059] be supplied by the contractor as part of this program.
      r. The NIDS ACE-IDS text interface application shall[FPR030] contain a test
         function that tests the interface independently of the NIDS display application.
         The test function shall[FPR031] open a window that displays the data coming
         across the interface. There shall[FPR032] be a way to capture the data in the
         window and store it on the hard drive. The data shall[FPR033] be stored and
         easily retrieved and displayed by a program for troubleshooting purposes.
         The retrieval program shall[FPR034] be supplied as part of the system.
      s. The retrieval program shall[FPR060] function independently of the NIDS
         applications. The retrieval program shall[FPR035] be transportable to any other
         computer running the same operating system and shall operate without the
         need for a license.
      t. If the NIDS uses a windows operating system, all interface configuration
         parameters shall[FPR036] be written to the registry or the equivalent for a non
         windows operating system.

3.2.2.3    Message Content Requirements
All textual data is encoded as American Standard Code for Information Interchange
(ASCII) characters as definedin ANSI X3.4 – 1986.

3.2.2.3.1 Any text data contained in a NIDS Notepad can be sent to the ACE-IDS. The
          Message Format for the messages going from the NIDS to the ACE-IDS is
          contained in table 3.2.2.3.1-1 below.

 3.2.2.4   Relationship among Messages
 The only relationship among messages is that when a new message is received, the NIDS
 shall[FPR037] overwrite the existing message.

 3.2.2.5   Quality of Service Requirements
 The following is a list of the Quality of Service parameters:
        a. Priority – The NIDS ACE-IDS text interface application process shall[FPR038]
           be implemented in such a way as to guarantee the update of data at a category
           equivalent to essential as defined in the NAS-SS-1000.
        b. Urgency – Within 3 seconds of receiving ACE-IDS data, the data shall[FPR039]
           be stored and displayed on the NIDS
        c. Importance – The ACE-IDS data is considered dynamic data which
           shall[FPR040] have a priority over any static data changes. Static data is defined
           as an update to the system caused by either an Air Traffic or Airway Facilities
           person.
        d. Data integrity – Since the transmitting systems do not transmit error detection
           information in the messages, the data shall[FPR041] be checked for proper
           format.
        e. Expected Bit Error Rate – The expected bit error rate shall[FPR042] be less than
           10E-06.

      f. Latency – This interface is a hardwired connection. The latency shall[FPR043]
         be measured from the time the ACE-IDS transmits data to the time the data is
         displayed on the NIDS. This value shall[FPR044] be less than 3 seconds.
      g. Throughput – Varies between systems
      h. Message Size – The message size is variable.

3.2.2.6 Error Handling Requirements
The NIDS ACE-IDS text interface application shall[FPR045] have a timeout function for
each product to prevent the possibility of old data being displayed. The NIDS ACE-IDS
text interface shall[FPR046] timeout if no data is received over the interface for a period
selectable in the NIDS ACE-IDS text interface application configuration file. In the
event of a timeout error, or a NIDS ACE-IDS text interface failure, a failure message or
indication of a failure shall[FPR047] appear on the NIDS ACE-IDS system display page, a
bit or value shall be sent to a NIDS Monitoring Application indicating that the interface
has failed and an error message shall be written to a NIDS ACE-IDS text interface
specific event log with the system date and time of the failure.

3.2.2.7   Interface Summary Table

3.2.3.2 Transport Layer and Lower Layer Services

3.2.3.2.1 Transport Layer

There are no Transport layer services associated with this interface

3.2.3.2.2 Lower Layer Services

The Physical Layer is the only lower layer service associated with this interface. This
layer has 2 configurations. The configurations are hardwired connections between the
ACE-IDS and the NIDS. The following connections shall[FPR049] be tested to ensure that
the ACE-IDS and the NIDS can transmit information back and forth:

               a. Hardwired connection – single workstation;

               b. Hardwired connection – redundant servers.

3.2.3.2.2.1 Hardwired Configuration
The connection for a workstation shall[FPR050] be wired as per Figure 3.2.3.2.2.1 – 1. If the
connection is to a server, the signal shall[FPR051] be split at the NIDS side using a modem
splitter such as the Patton electronics Micro Modem Splitter Model 305 or equivalent.

4   QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS

This IRD impose no special verification requirements.

5     PREPARATION FOR DELIVERY


There are no special delivery instructions for this interface. All delivery instructions are
contained in the Statement of Work for the system.

6     NOTES
There are no specific notes for this interface.

6.1   Definitions.
The following definitions apply to the terms and acronyms used in this IRD:

6.1.1 Analysis.
This method of verification consists of comparing hardware or software designs with
known scientific and technical principles, procedures, and practices to estimate the
capability or the proposed design to meet the mission and system requirements.

6.1.2 Demonstration.
Demonstration is a method of verification where qualitative determination of properties is
made for an end-item, including software and/or the use of technical data and
documentation. The items being verified are observed, but not quantitatively measured, in
a dynamic state.

6.1.3 Inspection.
Inspection is a method of verification used to determine compliance without the use of
special laboratory appliances, or services. Inspection consists of nondestructive
static-state examination of the hardware, software, and/or the technical data
documentation.

6.1.4 Test.
Test is a method of verification wherein performance is measured during or after the
controlled application of functional and/or environmental stimuli. Quantitative
measurements are analyzed to determine the degree of compliance. The process uses
laboratory equipment, procedure, and/or services.

6.1.5 Subsystem Level Verification.
This level of verification is usually accomplished at the contractor's facility and
culminates in the formal acceptance of the contractual end item.

6.1.6 Integration Level Verification.
This level of verification is conducted at the William J. Hughes Technical Center, or at a
key site. The verification conducted determines if the hardware, software, or subsystem
to be deployed for site installation performs correctly in a NAS environment and in
accordance with NAS system level operational and functional requirements.

6.1.7 Site Level Verification.
This level of verification is usually performed at the designated site. The verification
portion of the subsystem installation and checkout emphasizes the demonstration of the
overall system performance requirements. It includes the demonstration of a system
subsystem, or end-item, final acceptance demonstrations, and commissioning activities.

6.1.8 Transfer Time.
The transfer time specifies the required performance characteristics imposed on both
application processes.

6.1.9 System Specification
The system specification refers to the specification that contains the requirements for the
end users system. For example if this document were used to connect the external
systems to an integrated display system, the system specification would be the
specification used for the integrated display system.
