Crocheted Tape Measure Cozy
Ever have those scraps of leftover yarn and you hate to toss them, yet don't know what you could
possibly do with them? Well, make yourself a little crocheted tape measure cozy-add a little flair
to your project bag! (All pics are clickable)
Materials:
Mercerized cotton yarn (I used Omega Sinfonia, but this would work well with Classic Elite
Cotton, Tahki Cotton, King Tut Cotton - you get the picture. This used a scant amount.
4.25 mm hook and a 3.75 mm hook
Stitch Marker
Tapestry needle
1 1/2" diameter round retractable tape measure (Dollar Store, sewing supply store, Wal-mart).
Instructions:
Sides-Make two-Using larger 4.25 mm hook
Chain 4, sl st to first chain (or use the magic adjustable ring method).
Work 6 sc into ring-mark last sc with a stitch marker
Round 1:2 sc in each sc around, mark last with stitch marker (12 sc)
Round 2:*1 sc in next sc, 2 in next sc * around, The stitch in the stitch marked with the
stitch marker will ALWAYS be an increase stitch-if it’s not, you miscounted. Move up
stitch marker to last sc. (18 sc)
Round 3:*1 sc in next two 2 sc, 2 sc in next st * around (24 sc)
Round 4:*1 sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next st * around (30 sc)
Round 5:1 sc in each stitch around (even, no increases) (30 sc)
Fasten off and weave in ends.Your circles should each measure 2 ½” across at this
point.
Switch to 3.75 mm hook here.
With wrong sides of circles together, sc together in each stitch around until halfway
closed.Add tape measure, making sure the tape part is facing the unjoined area. Pull
out a few inches of the tape measure here.Keep sc around, through both sides until you
have two unworked stitches and the tape is still sticking out.Fasten off and use tails
from beginning of sc and end of sc around to stitch around the opening with your
tapestry needle. This will reinforce the opening where you pull out the tape measure.
Weave in ends and voila-all done.
Just squeeze the center, where you started the ring to retract the tape. Have fun with
it, add some fancy trim around the side, etc.
Optional edging (which I like)
The edging is a sl st, ch in same space 3 hdc in same stitch, sk sc, sc in next, sk sc, 4 hdc in next
around.
