These charts are intended to help teachers to identify and promote progression in English across the secondary years. They are
designed to support assessment for learning, rather than as precise descriptors for formulating of final judgements about standards.
The image of progression is based on minimum national expectations: that pupils will enter Year 7 with level 4, will achieve at least
level 5 by Year 9 and will reach grade C or above in GCSE. The wording within the charts reflects the expectations in the KS3
Framework, and is derived from the National Curriculum levels, the assessment focus descriptors in the QCA/SNS project on
Monitoring Pupils’ Progress and from GCSE assessment objectives.

Speaking and listening is included, and the EN1 categories from GCSE have been extended to years 7, 8 and 9 to clarify progression
across the whole subject.
