Lice Prevention and Home Remedies Although none of us ever wants to think about dealing with lice or treating it, here are some helpful hints/suggestions of home remedies, as well as preventative measures that work. Typically, you have most of these items in your pantry. Aqua Net Hairspray (or other type of hairspray) – To prevent lice being attracted to hair, spray a light coat of hairspray on hair before leaving the house. The lice are repulsed by the smell of hairspray. Listerine mouthwash – Wet the hair and scalp with Listerine, cover with a shower cap, and wait 2 hours. The thymol in Listerine kills lice and prevents re-infestation. Tea Tree Oil Shampoo – To prevent getting lice, shampoo regularly with tea tree oil shampoo. Tea Tree oil is a natural lice repellent. However, once your hair is infested, washing with this shampoo will not get rid of the lice. Clorox Bleach – When treating hair for lice, add 2 tsp. Bleach to a sink full of water and soak combs, brushes, barrettes, and hair clips. Rinse thoroughly with water. All Vegetable Shortening and White Vinegar – Rub a thick coat of shortening into the hair and roots, saturating the hair. Put on shower cap and let sit for 2 hours. Shampoo hair thoroughly. The oils in vegetable shortening suffocate head lice and also condition the hair. Rinse hair with white vinegar, then rinse again with water. The vinegar loosens the glue that holds the nits onto the hair. Comb hair with nit comb. Repeat 5 days later. Baby Oil and Dawn Dish Detergent – Saturate hair with baby oil, cover with a shower cap and let sit for 2 hours (great time to pop in a movie!). The lice drown in the baby oil. Wash the baby oil from hair with Dawn. Repeat 5-7 days later. Mayonnaise (not salad dressing) and White Vinegar – Saturate hair with a thick coat of mayo, working it into the roots of the hair. Cover with a shower cap and let sit for 2 hours. Shampoo hair thoroughly. The olive oil in the mayo kills the lice and nits. It is also an excellent conditioner. Rinse hair with vinegar, then rinse with water. Comb through hair with a nit comb. Repeat 5-7 days later. Olive Oil and Apple Cider Vinegar – mix equals parts of both and saturate hair all the way to the scalp. Cover with a shower cap and let stand for 1 hour. Wash hair with shampoo, comb through with nit comb. Repeat this process every other day for a week. Trash Bags – Place all items (decorative pillows, stuffed animals, etc.) that cannot be washed into trash bags, tie shut, and store in a garage for 14 days. Lice cannot survive without a human host. The eggs take one week to hatch, so after 2 weeks, all lice will be dead.
