COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Fundamentals of ecology and their relevance to human impact on natural
ecosystems. Field trips may be required at students' expense.

Prerequisites: None per South Mtn. CC. CDS requires Honors Biology or signed
recommendation by Biology 1-2 instructor acompanied by A/B grade
performance. Concurrent enrollment in chemistry recommended.

COURSE COMPETENCIES:
1.      Explain the process of Scientific Inquiry.
2.      Describe how the environment, working through natural selection, has
        produced diversity of species.
3.      Describe areas of genetics related to the environment.
4.      Identify structure and function of atoms and molecules in organisms and
        ecosystems.
5.      Describe populations and natural communities as units of structure and
        function.
6.      Describe levels of organization and interactions within ecosystems.
7.      Identify problems associated with direct landscape alteration by humans.
8.      Identify problems associated with the pollution of the environment.
9.      Describe consequences of uncontrolled population growth.

GRADING & EVALUATION

Dual enrollment for BIO 105 requires completion of both semesters of Honors
Advanced Biology. Please note South Mountain CC registration is for the spring
sem.only!

The semester grade is determined by:
   1) the 90-80-70-60% scale
   2) each quarter you will accumulate a percentage of the points possible
   3) same for the final exam

1st Q     = 40%                example:              93% of pts. Possible x 40% wt.
2nd Q     = 40%                                      90% of pts. Possible x 40% wt.
Final exam = 20%                                     70% of pts. Possible x 20% wt.
          = 100% of your sem grade                                = 87.2% sem grade
