Nutrition
Proper nutrition is the foundation of good health and recovery. Cooking classes, meals, and cookbooks all
demonstrate the variety appeal, and satisfaction of whole plant food vegetarian cuisine. In addition physicians explain the issues that
link nutrition with health or disease in their lectures.
Exercise
Action is a law of life. Muscle tone and strength are lost without exertion, but exercise improves the
health of body, mind, and spirit multiplying vitality and health. Exercise therapy includes outdoor exercise, treadmill evaluations and
Stretchercise. The many trails through beautiful surroundings beckon you to walk, walk, walk, but indoor exercise equipment is
available.
Water
Because the body is 70% water, keeping well hydrated and knowing what and when to drink are essential to
health. Hydrotherapy (water applied externally to the body) followed by massage enhances the circulation and immune system in
wonderful ways.
Sunlight
The sun is the established energy source ordained by God to sustain the cycle of life for plants and
animals. Abundant in California, sunlight is supremely important for the body’s metabolism and hormonal balance.
Temperance
Using good things moderately and avoiding the bad is obviously wise, yet often hard to practice.
Temperance can be neither bought nor earned, but is rather an important gift of God, a “fruit of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22, 23).
Moderation in all things is a thread woven throughout the fabric of NEWSTART® Lifestyle programs.
Air
The body’s most essential resource is air. More important than food or water, proper breathing and
pure air are fundamental to good health. Fresh, clear mountain air surrounds the beautiful natural environment of Weimar Center.
Rest
Restoration requires rest because sleep allows the body to renew itself. Many types of rest are
important for health, but the sweetest rest follows labor. “Early to bed and early to rise” is a vital NEWSTART® principle, and a healthy
lifestyle makes this principle easier to maintain.
Trust In Divine Power
Directly linked to physical health (Proverbs 3:5-6), trust in God is a gift leading to right choices.

Health Benefits of Water
How 8 Glasses a Day Keeps Fat Away
Incredible as it may seem, water is quite possibly the single most important catalyst in losing weight and keeping it off. Although most
of us take for granted, water may be the only true "magic potion" for permanent weight loss.
Water supresses the appetite naturally and helps the body metabolize stored fat. Studies have shown that a decrease in water intake
will cause fat deposits to increase, while an increase in water intake can actually reduce fat deposits.
Here's why: The kidneys can't function properly without enough water. When they don't work to capacity, some of their load is dumped
onto the liver. One of the liver's primary functions is to metabolize stored fat into usable energy for the body. But if the liver has to do
some of the kidney's work it can't operate at full throttle. As a result, it metabolizes less fat more fat remains stored in the body and
weight loss stops.
Drinking enough water is the best treatment for fluid retention. When the body gets less water,it perceives this as a threat to survival
and begins to hold on to every drop. Water is stored in extracellular spaces (outside the cell). This shows up as swollen feet, legs and
hands.
Diuretics offer a temporary solution at best. They force out stored water along with some essential nutrients. Again, the body perceives
a treat and will replace the lost water at the first opportunity. Thus, the condition quickly returns.
The best way to overcome the problem of water retention is to give your body what it needs -- plenty of water. Only then will stored
water be released.
If you have a constant problem with water retention, excess salt may be to blame. Your body will tolerate sodium only in a certain
concentration. The more salt you eat the more water your system retains to dilute it.
But getting rid of unneeded salt is easy -- just drink more water. As it's forced through the kidneys it takes away excess sodium.
The overweight person needs more water than a thin one. Larger people have larger metabolic loads. Since we know that water is the
key to fat metabolism, it follows that the over weight person needs more water.
Water helps to maintain proper muscle tone by giving muscles their natural ability to contract and by preventing dehydration. It also
helps to prevent the sagging skin that usually follows weigh loss -- shrinking cells are buoyed by water which plumps the skin and
leaves it clear, healthy and resilient.
Water helps rid the body of waste. During weight loss, the body has a lot more waste to get rid of -- all that metabolized fat must be
shed. Again, adequate water helps flush out the waste.
Water can help relieve constipation. When the body gets too little water, it siphons what it needs from internal sources. The colon is
one primary source. Result? Constipation. But when a person drinks enough water, normal bowel function usually returns.
So far, we've discovered some remarkable truths about water and weight loss:
The body will not function properly without enough water and can't metabolize stored fat efficiently.
Retained water shows up as excess weight.
To get rid of excess water you must drink more water.
Drinking water is essential to weight loss.
How much water is enough? On the average, a person should drink eight 8-ounce glasses every day. That's about 2 quarts. However,
the overweight person needs one additional glass for every 25 pounds of excess weight. The amount you drink also should be
increased if you exercise briskly or if the weather is hot and dry.
Water should preferably be cold. It's absorbed into the system more quickly than warm water. And some evidence suggests that
drinking cold water can actually help burn calories. To utilize water most efficiently during weight loss, follow this schedule:
Morning: 1 quart consumed over a 30-minute period.
Noon: 1 quart consumed over a 30-minute period.
Evening: 1 quart consumed between five and six o'clock.
When the body gets the water it needs to function optimally, it's fluids are perfectly balanced. When this happens, you have reached
the "breakthrough point." What does this mean?
Endocrine-gland function improves.
Fluid retention is alleviated as stored water is lost.
More fat is used as fuel because the liver is free to metabolize stored fat.
Natural thirst returns.
There is a loss of hunger almost over night.
If you stop drinking enough water, your body fluids will be thrown out of balance again, and you may experience fluid
retention, unexplained weight gain and loss of thirst. To remedy the situation you'll have to go back and force another
"breakthrough."
Top 10 Health Benefits of a Good Night's Sleep
Sleep, we all love it, especially when you wake up from a great night's sleep. In the past, sleep was often ignored by doctors and surrounded by myths, but now we are
beginning to understand the importance of sleep to overall health and well-being. In fact, when people get less than 6 or 7 hours of sleep each night, their risk for
developing diseases begins to increase.
1. Sleep Keeps Your Heart Healthy
Heart attacks and strokes are more common during the early morning hours. This fact may be explained by the way sleep interacts with the blood vessels. Lack of sleep
has been associated with worsening of blood pressure and cholesterol, all risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Your heart will be healthier if you get between 7 and
9 hours of sleep each night.
2. Sleep May Prevent Cancer
People working the late shift have a higher risk for breast and colon cancer. Researchers believe this link is caused by differing levels of melatonin in people who are
exposed to light at night. Light exposure reduces the level of melatonin, a hormone that both makes us sleepy and is thought to protect against cancer. Melatonin
appears to suppress the growth of tumors. Be sure that your bedroom is dark to help your body produce the melatonin it needs.
3. Sleep Reduces Stress
When your body is sleep deficient, it goes into a state of stress. The body's functions are put on high alert which causes an increase in blood pressure and a production
of stress hormones. Higher blood pressure increases your risk for heart attacks and strokes. The stress hormones also, unfortunately, make it harder for you to sleep.
Learn relaxation techniques to counter the effects of stress. There are also stress reduction techniques for sleep.
4. Sleep Reduces Inflammation
The increase in stress hormones raises the level of inflammation in your body, also creating more risk for heart-related conditions, as well as cancer and diabetes.
Inflammation is thought to one of the causes of the deterioration of your body as you age.
5. Sleep Makes You More Alert
Of course, a good night's sleep makes you feel energized and alert the next day. Being engaged and active not only feels great, it increases your chances for another
good night's sleep. When you wake up feeling refreshed, use that energy to get out into the daylight, do active things, and be engaged in your world. You'll sleep better
the next night and increase your daily energy level.
6. Sleep Bolsters Your Memory
Researchers do not fully understand why we sleep and dream, but a process called memory consolidation occurs during sleep. While your body may be resting, your
brain is busy processing your day, making connections between events, sensory input, feelings and memories. Your dreams and deep sleep are an important time for
your brain to make memories and links. Getting more quality sleep will help you remember and process things better.
7. Sleep May Help You Lose Weight
Researchers have also found that people who sleep less than seven hours per night are more likely to be overweight or obese. It is thought that the lack of sleep impacts
the balance of hormones in the body that affect appetite. The hormones ghrelin and leptin, important for the regulation of appetite, have been found to be disrupted by
lack of sleep. So if you are interested in controlling or losing weight, don't forget to pay attention to getting a good night's sleep.
8. Naps Make You Smarter
Napping during the day is not only an effective and refreshing alternative to caffeine, it can also protect your health and make you more productive. A study of 24,000
Greek adults showed that people who napped several times a week had a lower risk for dying from heart disease. People who nap at work have much lower levels of
stress. Napping also improves memory, cognitive function and mood.
9. Sleep May Reduce Your Risk for Depression
Sleep impacts many of the chemicals in your body, including serotonin. People with a deficiency in serotonin are more likely to suffer from depression. You can help to
prevent depression by making sure you are getting the right amount of sleep, between 7 and 9 hours each night.
10. Sleep Helps the Body Make Repairs
Sleep is a time for your body to repair damage caused by stress, ultraviolet rays and other harmful exposures. Your cells produce more protein while you are sleeping.
These protein molecules form the building blocks for cells, allowing them to repair damage.
Get A Breath of Fresh Air!
Fresh air is made up of a number of different gases. Oxygen and nitrogen are the most abundant ones.
Did you know that your body is made up of trillions of cells?
Each of those tiny cells needs a constant supply of oxygen in order to live. We can only live for a few minutes without air.
And the Lord God formed man out of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living
soul. Genesis 2:7
After you take in air through your lungs, your red blood cells pick up the oxygen and carry it to the rest of the cells in your body.
Your cells then use this steady supply of oxygen in its energy production process called metabolism.
If your cells get enough oxygen they will be healthy. Healthy cells make up a healthy body.
Every time you breathe out through your lungs, you let out toxins.
These wastes are the by-products of the metabolism that is constantly taking place in your cells.
If you are always taking in old, stale air you are depriving your cells of one of their most basic needs.
This is harmful to your overall health and well-being. It is so important to replace old, stale air with fresh, clean air.
Why is Fresh Air so Important?
A steady supply of fresh air is very important. Fresh air provides you with a steady supply of oxygen which is needed by your brain and
every single cell of your body.
If you stay in a closed in area for a long period of time, you will end up breathing in the same air over and over again. The oxygen
content of the air will go down continually as you (and whoever else happens to be in the room with you) breathe out carbon dioxide
and other wastes.
Breathing this stale air will not supply your body with enough oxygen to keep your cells fueled and functioning properly.
Fresh air is full of negative ions. It has a good amount of oxygen and is free of pollutants. It is refreshing and will give you a lift!
Oxygen typically carries a negative charge, while carbon dioxide has a positive charge. Therefore, air with a higher concentration of
oxygen will be more negatively charged (i.e., have more negative ions) than air with an abundance of carbon dioxide.
You can find air that is charged with negative ions out in nature where it is produced:
Around plants, trees and other vegetation
Near moving water - lakes, rivers, waterfalls, oceans, at the beach
In sunlight
After thunderstorms - Ever noticed how fresh the air seems after the rain?
Benefits of Fresh Air
Who needs fresh air? We all do!
If you are feeling ill or are suffering from any kind of disease, then fresh air is even more important for you.
While your body is healing and repairing, you may be eliminating more toxins into the air than someone who does not have any health
concerns. It is important that you do not breathe in that old air again.
You need an abundance of fresh air that is full of oxygen.
Here is a list of just some of the many health benefits of fresh air. Fresh air:
Helps increase the rate and quality of growth in both plants and animals
Helps the airways of your lungs to dilate more fully and improves the cleansing action of your lungs
Helps to improve your heart rate, blood pressure, and metabolic rate
Helps your immune system fight off disease more effectively
Soothes your nerves. It will leave you feeling more refreshed and relaxed
Will stimulate your appetite and will help your food to digest more effectively. That is why it's great to take a brisk walk outside after you
eat
Will help you sleep more soundly at night
Helps to clear your mind, improves your concentration, and helps you to think more clearly
Alters your brain levels of serotonin which helps to improve your mood and promote a sense of happiness and well-being
Helps your body get rid of accumulated impurities
Provides enough oxygen for cellular metabolism
Helps to kill bacteria and viruses in the air thanks to its rich oxygen content. Polluted air cannot do this
Strengthens your immune system by supplying it with the oxygen it needs. White blood cells require more oxygen when working to kill
and destroy bacteria, viruses, and germs. Enough oxygen will ensure that they are able to function properly
Indoor Air Pollution and Air Quality
If you live in a home or work in an office building that is air tight, you may not be getting enough fresh air.
There is less of a chance that indoor air and outdoor air is being exchanged on a regular basis.
The air is stale and over time toxic chemicals from carpets, furniture, and cleaning products can build up. This can lead to sick building
syndrome for some people.
What Happens When You Breathe Stale Air?
If you are breathing in stale air, you might have started to notice some of the following symptoms:
Dizziness
Nausea
Headaches
Fatigue and exhaustion
Irritability
Anxiety
Depression
Frequent fevers, colds, or lung diseases
Tips For Getting A Healthy Dose Of Fresh Air
Follow these tips to make sure you get a healthy dose of fresh air every single day.
While on your breaks at work, step outside and take some slow, deep breaths. This will banish that tired, sluggish feeling and will leave
you feeling more energized and focused.
Open your windows regularly and air out your house as often as you can. If there happens to be a smog warning in effect, wait until later
on at night or very early in the morning when the air is a lot cleaner.
If you can, sleep with your bedroom window open. You can also leave your bedroom door open to increase the transfer of air
Do not smoke in your home and do not allow other family members or guests to smoke in your home either. Even second hand smoke
contains hundreds of harmful chemicals.
Avoid breathing in car exhaust. Do not allow cars to idle near your windows or in the garage attached to your house
Try not to stay in stuffy rooms for long periods of time.
Make sure that your clothes dryers, gas cooking ranges, heaters, and fireplaces are properly vented to the outdoors.
Be sure to maintain your heating and air-conditioning units on a regular basis.
Get your air ducts and furnace filters cleaned regularly.
Do some deep breathing exercises every day. Work them into your regular routine.
Get some exercise on a daily basis. When you can, try to exercise outside. Exercise gets your circulation going and floods your body with
oxygen.
Don't forget about your posture. Always try to sit up straight and stand tall to allow your lungs to expand. That will help you take in
enough oxygen.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to breathe deeply and freely without being restricted. Try not to wear clothes that are
tight around your chest or abdomen.
Avoid using air fresheners, and other artificial fragrances in your home. Use natural alternatives instead. Pure essential oils are a great
choice. Or you can put some cinnamon and cloves in a pot with water and let it simmer for a few minutes.
Keep plants in your home and work environment to help improve the air quality. Plants produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide from
the air. Some plants can even remove toxic pollutants from the air.
How much should the average adult exercise every day?
For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends these exercise guidelines:
Aerobic activity. Get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity. You also
can do a combination of moderate and vigorous activity. The guidelines suggest that you spread out this exercise during the course of a
week.
Strength training. Do strength training exercises at least twice a week. No specific amount of time for each strength training session is
included in the guidelines.
Moderate aerobic exercise includes such activities as brisk walking, swimming and mowing the lawn. Vigorous aerobic exercise
includes such activities as running and aerobic dancing. Strength training can include use of weight machines, or activities such as rock
climbing or heavy gardening.
As a general goal, aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. If you want to lose weight or meet specific fitness goals,
you may need to exercise more. Want to aim even higher? You can achieve more health benefits if you ramp up your exercise to 300
minutes a week.
Short on long chunks of time? Even brief bouts of activity offer benefits. For instance, if you can't fit in one 30-minute walk, try three 10-
minute walks instead. What's most important is making regular physical activity part of your lifestyle.
Tumeric
The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. Tumeric has been used for over 2500 years in India, where it was most likely first used as a dye.
The medicinal properties of this spice have been slowly revealing themselves over the centuries. Long known for its anti-inflammatory
properties, recent research has revealed that turmeric is a natural wonder, proving beneficial in the treatment of many different health
conditions from cancer to Alzheimer's disease.
Here are 20 reasons to add turmeric to your diet:
1. It is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in disinfecting cuts and burns.
2. When combined with cauliflower, it has shown to prevent prostate cancer and stop the growth of existing prostate cancer.
3. Prevented breast cancer from spreading to the lungs in mice.
4. May prevent melanoma and cause existing melanoma cells to commit suicide.
5. Reduces the risk of childhood leukemia.
6. Is a natural liver detoxifier.
7. May prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain.
8. May prevent metastases from occurring in many different forms of cancer.
9. It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects.
10. Has shown promise in slowing the progression of multiple sclerosis in mice.
11. Is a natural painkiller and cox-2 inhibitor.
12. May aid in fat metabolism and help in weight management.
13. Has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression.
14. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
15. Boosts the effects of chemo drug paclitaxel and reduces its side effects.
16. Promising studies are underway on the effects of turmeric on pancreatic cancer.
17. Studies are ongoing in the positive effects of turmeric on multiple myeloma.
18. Has been shown to stop the growth of new blood vessels in tumors.
19. Speeds up wound healing and assists in remodeling of damaged skin.
20. May help in the treatment of psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions.
Turmeric can be taken in powder or pill form. It is available in pill form in most health food stores, usually in 250-500mg capsules.
Once you start using turmeric on a regular basis, it's fun to find new ways to use it in recipes. My favorite way to use it is to add a pinch of it to
egg salad. It adds a nice flavor and gives the egg salad a rich yellow hue.
Contraindications: Turmeric should not be used by people with gallstones or bile obstruction. Though turmeric is often used by pregnant
women, it is important to consult with a doctor before doing so as turmeric can be a uterine stimulant.
Cayenne Pepper: The King of Medicinal Herbs
If cayenne pepper (Capsicum minimum or Capsicum fastigiatum) is not the king of medicinal herbs it is certainly a prince among them. Its
health benefits are many, varied, and are truly astonishing.
Many from around the world recount amazing results from using cayenne pepper (or capsicum as it's sometimes called) for simple healing as
well in the battling and elimination of challenging health problems.
Cayenne pepper powder comes from red hot chili peppers that are not only good to eat but are great for your health. Taking it in powder form,
however, is especially potent and powerful.
Where does cayenne come from? The fruit or body of the peppers are dried then ground down, pulped and baked into cakes, which are
then sifted to make the spice known as cayenne pepper.
In case you may be slightly confused, red hot chili peppers are sometimes referred to as "cayenne peppers" as well.
(For more info on why I call it a medicinal herb instead of its proper classification as a spice, go to the Cayenne Pepper: Herb or Spice page.)
Continuing, cayenne pepper has been used for centuries as a medicinal and culinary herb and undoubtedly most just think of them as "those
hot red peppers" to be used for spicing up food or to be used primarily in cooking ethnic cuisine, but it is so much more.
Cayenne is said to have originated within Cayenne in French Guiana and is now produced or farmed in many parts of the world. It was one of
the major foods of the Hunzas who are reported by many to have extraordinarily long lifespans, although this is debatable.
It was also used quite extensively by the Aztecs and Mayans. In fact, historians assert it was a staple of the Aztec diet.
Cayenne is also revered in the alternative health community and chiefly by medicinal herbalists for its remarkable array of health benefits.
Cayenne Pepper and Heart Health
So, why is cayenne pepper so great for your health? What are its great health benefits? The health benefits of cayenne pepper are far reaching
and astounding. So much so that many think its benefits are exaggerated.
Consider this: cayenne pepper, through the instrumentality of its secondary metabolite capsaicin (pronounced cap-say-sin), is scientifically
proven to kill prostate cancer cells, among other fantastic health benefits, and that is just the beginning as to the benefits of this humble,
nondescript herb.
Much scientific research has been initiated to validate what naturopathic practitioners have known for years: It can stop heart attacks, nourish
the heart with vital nutrients, remove plaque from the arteries, help rebuild flesh destroyed or harmed by frostbite, heal hemorrhoids, re-build
stomach tissue, heal stomach ulcers, fortify your overall health, and mitigate the most wrenching of diseases.
Continuing, it improves circulation, rebuilds blood cells, lowers cholesterol, emulsifies triglycerides, removes
toxins from the bloodstream and improves overall heart health. It's even a great insect repellent.
As mentioned, it can also heal ulcers, which seems contradictory considering its native calidity or heat. It
immediately equalizes blood pressure in your system, shrinks hemorrhoids, and heals the gall bladder too.
It can be used as a diuretic as well helping in elimination both with urine and with built-up fecal matter in the
intestines. It has wonderful, scientifically-proven antifungal properties as well.
This is by no means a comprehensive list. So, why haven't you heard of it? Because of money. I'm convinced
Big Pharma knows about the remarkable healing properties of medicinal herbs and spices like cayenne pepper but they are not in the business
of healing people but in making money.
In 2008, within the U.S. alone, Big Pharma sold $160 billion dollars of drugs -- $160 billion!!!
So, why sell a cholesterol-reducing drug when you can just take cayenne pepper and it will do the same while also removing plaque from your
arterial walls without nasty side effects? Needless to say, it's clearly because cholesterol drugs like Lipitor make billions of dollars for their
makers. (Lipitor makes on average $8 to $12 billion a year for Pfizer.)
That's billions with a "b" my friends. Now you know why. I'd love to be wrong but I don't think I am. A little
while ago, I was in a local supermarket where cayenne was selling for $1.67 a pound! "This humble
medicinal spice is probably the greatest medicinal agent known to man and is readily affordable to all but
many pass it by because of ignorance. How sad that almost no one knows about it," I thought.
Just the cayenne pepper and heart health linkage is enough to make this a truly remarkable medicinal
herb, but its uses and benefits go far beyond that remedy.
Capsicum, or cayenne pepper, truly is a king among the herbal family and is one of the greatest health
secrets of all time. It is hot, yes, and tough to swallow, but that inconvenience is most tolerable when one considers that you can literally save
your life and a bundle of money by taking it religiously.
The information in this site may be small but it's packed with information on the incredible health benefits of cayenne pepper, health benefits
that can be yours. That said...
I'm not a medical doctor so any sharing of health educational information in this website should be taken as just that -- the sharing of
educational information. Please see the disclaimer link on the navbar to your left for more information or at the bottom of this page. If you have
any concerns about taking cayenne pepper, consult your doctor.
Conclusion
In closing, let me say this: Please do your own homework, research and objective thinking. Don't let anyone tell you how to think. If you are
open minded, you will find some pearls of great price that will bless your health.
I truly believe you've found one of the greatest health secrets here for I and many before me have discovered for ourselves the incredible
health blessings of cayenne pepper. Indeed, If laughter is the best medicine, then perhaps cayenne is the second best.

Balsamic Vinegar
Balsamic is an aromatic, aged types of vinegar from the concentrated juice, of white grapes (wine grapes). Its distinct color and taste is
a product of years of aging in a successive number of barrel made of various types of wood (including oak, mulberry, chestnut, cherry,
juniper, ash, and acacia). The process of becoming vinegar occurs in wooden barrels. As the volume decreases through evaporation
over period of years the maturing liquor is transferred to smaller and smaller barrels, each with its special blend of aromatic flavoring
woods. The barrels are placed in the attic for ideal temperatures, hot in summer, cold in winter. Over years of aging finest Balsamic
emerges.
The commercial balsamic sold in supermarkets today is typically made with red wine vinegar or concentrated grape juice mixed with
strong vinegar, which is laced with caramel and sugar.
Other than its positive effect on the taste of our food, balsamic is also good for our health. So instead of using mayonnaise based
dressing on your salad, substitute balsamic vinegar to it to reduce your overall fat and calorie intake. Balsamic vinegar is also an
effective marinade for tenderizing lean cuts of meat.
Health Benefits:
Balsamic has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties which make it an effective remedy for treating infections and wounds.
Folk healers used balsamic to cure body pain and as energizer.
Balsamic vinegar contains powerful antioxidant called polyphenols which fight cell damage and boost our immune system.
The antioxidant in balsamic have also the potential to protect against heart disease, cancer, and other inflammatory conditions.
Balsamic can help boost the activity of the digestive enzyme pepsin thus improving metabolism.
Balsamic may help control diabetes. Study suggests that by adding as little as five teaspoons of the vinegar with a meal can improve
insulin sensitivity. Better insulin sensitivity means better diabetes control and lowered risk of dangerous complications.
Balsamic can reduce cholesterol level.
Balsamic antioxidant may slow the aging process.
Balsamic reduces the frequency of headaches.
Balsamic contains important minerals that can strengthen the bones.
Balsamic can help prevent anemia and fatigue.
Balsamic can help suppress appetite and therefore an aid in controlling weight.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is an effective natural bacteria-fighting agent that contains many vital minerals and trace elements such as
potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, chlorine, sodium, sulfur, copper, iron, silicon and fluorine that are vital for a healthy
body.
Natural Apple Cider Vinegar is made by crushing fresh, organically grown apples and allowing them to mature in wooden barrels. This
boosts the natural fermentation qualities of the crushed apples, which differs from the refined and distilled vinegars found in
supermarkets. When the vinegar is mature, it contains a dark, cloudy, web-like bacterial foam called mother, which becomes visible
when the rich brownish liquid is held to the light. The mother can be used to add to other vinegar to hasten maturity for making more
Apple Cider Vinegar. Natural vinegars that contain the mother have enzymes and minerals that other vinegars in grocery stores may
not have due to over-processing, over-heating, and filtration. For this reason, it is recommended that you purchase only Natural Apple
Cider Vinegar, with an ideal acidity (pH) level of 5 to 7.

Rooibos tea
ROOIBOS TEA FACTS
Rooibos is not a true tea, but a herb. The brew made from the dried Rooibos leaves is therefore a herbal infusion (known as a
tisane) rather than a tea, but is widely known as Rooibos tea.
Rooibos has a distinctive colour, flavour and aroma, which differentiates it from most other teas. The flavour can be described
as slightly sweet and fruity.
The vibrant amber colour of Rooibos comes from the natural colour that develops during the post-harvest “fermentation”
(oxidation) process, brought about by natural enzymes in the plant.
Rooibos is a pure and natural product, as it contains no colourants, additives or preservatives.
Rooibos has no kilojoules.
Rooibos is graded according to colour, flavour, and cut length.
Rooibos ages well and can be stored for long periods without any deterioration in quality, flavour and taste. In many countries
Rooibos is enjoyed as a hot or cold beverage without milk, with or without sweeteners. Many South Africans enjoy Rooibos as
a hot beverage with milk, sweetened with sugar or honey
GREEN ROOIBOS
Green Rooibos is made from the same plant as traditional Rooibos. The only difference is in the processing. For traditional
Rooibos, the green leaves and stems of the plant are crushed and “fermented” before drying. The fermentation step is actually
an oxidation process brought about by enzymes and chemicals naturally present in the plant. In the case of green Rooibos,
the fermentation process is skipped, and the “green” leaves and stems are dried directly. Different processes are used to
prevent oxidation.
Green (unfermented) Rooibos infusion has a lighter tan/yellow colour and a very mild "green" taste reminiscent of green tea.
Green Rooibos has higher levels of antioxidants than traditional fermented Rooibos and demonstrates even higher antioxidant
and - in some cases - antimutagenic (cancer-fighting) activities.
Most green Rooibos is exported. It is used as a tea and in extract form in beauty and nutraceutical products. (A nutraceutical
is any food substance that provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease.)
ROOIBOS HEALTH FACTS
Rooibos is a good source of antioxidants and is the only known source of a potent antioxidant aspalathin, which could play a
role in combating several lifestyle diseases.
Unlike black and green teas, Rooibos is naturally caffeine free (not decaffeinated) and therefore suitable for children, infants
and breast-feeding mothers.
Rooibos has proven cancer-fighting properties in animal research studies.
Rooibos contains low amounts of tannin. (Tannins are astringent, bitter-tasting plant polyphenols that bind and precipitate
proteins and interfere with iron absorption in the body.)
After centuries of use, no negative side effects of Rooibos have ever been recorded.
In Japan, Rooibos is called “Long Life Tea” and considered an anti-ageing beverage. Many Japanese women also believe
that Rooibos tea offer special benefits during pregnancy.
ROOIBOS ANTIOXIDANTS
Rooibos contains a complex and abundant blend of antioxidants.
Rooibos is the only known source of a specifically beneficial and rare antioxidant called aspalathin.
Unfermented (green) Rooibos has higher levels of antioxidants than traditional, fermented Rooibos.
The antioxidant content of Rooibos also depends on the soil conditions of the region where the plant was grown, and on how
the infusion was prepared, i.e. ratio of leaves to water, temperature of the water, extraction time, stirring, etcetera.
ROOIBOS vs CANCER, HEART DISEASE, AND MORE …
Rooibos slows down the development of cancerous skin lesions.
The complex mixture of polyphenols in Rooibos may help protect against free radicals. (Free radicals are unstable molecules
that can damage the DNA in cells, leading to cancer.)
These free radicals can also oxidise cholesterol, leading to clogged blood vessels, heart attack and stroke. The antioxidants in
Rooibos can neutralize these free radicals and help to limit their impact.
Rooibos increases the antioxidant status of rat’s livers. This could result in Rooibos being used in the treatment of chronic
liver disease. Based on recent research done in the Slovak Republic, this research team recommend Rooibos for people with
chronic liver problems.
Rooibos protects the brains of aged rats against oxidative damage. This could play a role in the treatment of Alzheimer’s
disease.
Many of these findings require more research before specific recommendations about the use of Rooibos can be made, and
therefore several research groups around the world are currently working on Rooibos.
