                            Kerr’s powders

                            Kerr Fire Fighting Chemicals has been manufacturing fire extinguishing powders
                            at its plant in Liverpool England for over 50 years. Its range of dry powders is the
                            result of continued research and development, both in the choice of raw
                            materials and plant. Product cost efficiency together with maximum fire
                            extinguishing performance, versatility and storage stability have been achieved
                            by the control of composition, particle size and by the incorporation of anti-
                            caking, flow promoting and water repellent additives.

                            Different types of dry powders are necessary to protect different fire risks. The
                            fire classifications used in this brochure is the European (EN3) Standard.

                            They are:
                                                 Solid combustible material such as wood, cardboard, fabrics,
                             Class A
                                                 plastic and paper

                             Class B             Flammable liquids such as oil. Petrol, alcohol, etc.

                             Class C             Flammable gases such as coal gas, LPG, LNG, etc.

                                                 Combustible metals and their alloys such as sodium,
                             Class D
                                                 potassium, magnesium, aluminium and titanium.

                             Class E             Live electrical contacts are likely to be encountered.


                            Kerr's product range includes powders based on sodium bicarbonate, potassium
                            bicarbonate, potassium sulphate or mono - ammonium phosphate. These dry
                            powders are manufactured and tested to the EN 615 (1995) standard

                            Quality control and approvals
                            All manufacturing facilities, quality and sales systems are accredited to
                            BS.EN.ISO 9001 (2000).

                            Foam compatibility
                            Major applications for Class BCE powders exist in refineries and airfield crash
                            trucks when dry powers ( for rapid knock-down of fire) and foams ( for securing
                            the area against re-ignition) are likely to be used simultaneously. Therefore
                            foam compatible powders have been developed either based on potassium
                            bicarbonate or sodium bicarbonate treated with hydrophobic silicas. However,
                            foams such as Fluoroprotein, AFFF or FFFP have a significant degree of powder
                            compatibility themselves and therefore do not require special foam compatible
                            powders.

                            All Kerr powders are non-toxic.

                            Packaging

                            Individual packs for extinguisher filling are available from 1kg to 12kg. For bulk
                            filling, 25kg polyethylene lined multiwalled sacks and 1000kg IBCs (big bags) are
                            supplied. Special packaging requirements can also be considered.

                            Class D powders are normally supplied in 25 kg plastic pails but smaller packs
                            can be supplied on a special order basis.

                            Storage
                            Kerr powders are formulated to withstand extreme temperatures. The shelf life
                            is at least 5 years if stored under dry conditions.

                            Description
                            Kerr’s ABC powders are mixtures of mono-ammonium phosphate and
                            ammonium sulphate ground to selected particle sizes and treated with flow

                            promoting and moisture repellent additives.

                            The availability of various grade of ABC powder provides the user with a choice,
                            ranging from an extremely high performance to an economical but effective
                            product.

                            Extinguishing mechanism
                            In addition to the particle surface extinguishing effect of a Class B powder, Class
                            ABC powders have low melting/decomposition points in order of 150oC to 180oC,
                            and when these powders are applied to hot and smouldering surfaces, the
                            particle fuse and swell to form a barrier which excludes oxygen and thereby
                            completes the extinguishing process and prevents re-ignition.

                            D Class Extinguishing Efficiency
                            Centrimax / Isocomp ABC Powders have been successfully tested to the DIN
                            14406 Part 21.4.4.1.4 for class D fires.

                            Description
                            ABC 20 is a general purpose dry chemical powder with a good efficiency in fires
                            of class A, B, C, and E ( up to 1,000 volts).

                            Packaging
                            ABC20 powder is packed in individual extinguisher size cartons ranging from 1
                            kilo to 12 kilo. For bulk filling, they can be supplied in 25 kilo multiwall paper

                            sacks, stretch wrapped on pallets of 1000 kilo. These packages are suitable for
                            containerised shipment.

                            Powders can also be supplied in 1000 kilo Big Bags to simplify handling and to
                            feed into extinguisher filling machine hoppers. This packaging is also suitable for
                            containerised shipment


                            Storage
                            Kerr powders are formulated not to be affected by long term storage. However,
                            although all powders are stable at low temperatures, there are upper
                            temperature limits for storage which will depend on the chemical nature of the
                            particular powder. As a general guide, temperatures of 50oC should not be
                            exceeded.

                            Powders should be stored in a dry location in original packaging until required for
                            use.

                            In addition to the particle surface extinguishing effect of a Class B powder, Class
                            ABCE powders have low melting/decomposition points in the order of 150oC to

                            Monnex
                            Class BCE Powder


                            Description
                            Monnex powder is based on potassium bicarbonate – urea complex and was
                            developed by ICI in England. It is now manufactured and distributed by Kerr Fire

                            Fighting Chemicals. Monnex is recommended for large fires ( Class B and C )
                            where superior fire extinguishing qualities and reliable protection is of paramount
                            importance.

                            For example, when filled in hand appliances, Monnex will easily extinguish fires
                            which would otherwise need wheeled units. Similarly, Monnex is particularly
                            effective against fire involving alcohols, ketones and esters, which are more
                            difficult for conventional fire fighting agents.

                            Due to the low density of Monnex, it is not normally possible to charge an
                            extinguisher to its normal capacity. A 75% charge by weight is considered
                            average.

                            Extinguishing mechanism
                            As with BC powders, Monnex interferes with the chemical reactions which occur
                            within the combustion zone. However, the unique property of Monnex is that
                            within the combustion zone, the high temperature causes the powder to explode
                            and break into minute particles giving a very large surface area which effects the
                            extinction of the flames.

                            Monnex is the only powder to possess this unique property.

                            Class D Powder


                            Description
                            M28 is a fire extinguishing, dry powder based on sodium chloride which has
                            been treated with flow and moisture repellent additives. It is suitable for Class D

                            fires, specifically those involving alkali metals such as sodium and potassium.
                            However, it is unsuitable for lithium fires.

                            BS.EN.ISO 9001 (2000).

                            Guidance for use
                            As a guide, the quantity of M28 powder required will be approximately 3 to 5
                            kilos per kilo of metal involved, depending on whether it is a shallow or deep
                            pool fire and on the nature of the metal involved.

                            To prevent splashing of the molten metal, extinguishers should be fitted with a
                            low velocity applicator ( available in standard length of 2m ). This also provides
                            a degree of operator safety.
