Abbott Point of Care a Leader in Diagnostic Blood Testing
Abbott Point of Care’s (APOC) Ottawa facility is a global provider of innovative medical diagnostic test
cartridges for the i-STAT System. The plant has seen significant growth in the last five years.
APOC was formed in 2004 when Abbott acquired i-STAT Corporation, which developed an industry-changing
hand-held whole blood analyzer system that delivers lab-quality test results in minutes for critical care and
ambulatory care settings (e.g. emergency rooms, operating theatres, radiology and intensive care units as well
as in medical clinics, on military ships and in field hospitals; the product has even been used on the space station
MIR).
The cartridges are all designed and manufactured in Ottawa. APOC’s latest diagnostic cartridge – the i-STAT
CHEM8+ – uses five biosensor chips to provide nine different test results from a 95 microlitre blood sample.
APOC is also a leader in microelectronics apprenticeship training – 400 of its employees are enrolled in
apprenticeship training.
The company is committed to community. For example, it partnered with the Ottawa Hospital to raise money
for the expansion of The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre.
“We are very proud that the products we build in Ottawa really make a difference and save lives,” says Sean
Tomalty, Plant Manager. “Abbott and our employees give back to the community through supporting different
community programs, showing our commitment to caring for patients and the places where we operate.”
Abbott Point of Care [www.abbott.com and www.abbottpointofcare.com] is another global leader that finds
opportunity in Canada.
