reading. It also provides numerous opportunities for reading and comprehension instruction. Helping novice readers learn how to comprehend

literature and other texts requires teachers to demonstrate what proficient readers do by making our reading processes "visible" through

thinking aloud and discussing the comprehension practices we use to make sense of texts. This workshop will focus on the role of literature in

the reading workshop, creating invested discussions, and the modeling of reading instruction that provides demonstrations, guided practice and

reflective opportunities for developing reading comprehension lessons.

This course offers problem solving based strategies for teaching math for conceptual understanding. It covers the research done at the

University of Wisconsin on how students learn mathematics. Participants will learn to plan their mathematics lessons based on their students’

thinking. Participants will meet three full days in July and one full day on Sept. 27. Four 1.5 hour follow up sessions are planned for continued

support throughout the year.

Participants will explore algebraic connections, coordinate geometry, conjecture, and justification which are woven into the topics of geometric

promote the power of using concrete experiences to introduce and build geometric concepts. Throughout the institute, multiple representations

multiple activities that are designed to allow students to explore and come to understand the fascinating world of water and the aquatic habitats

GLOBE is an international science program which brings together scientists, teachers, and students of all ages to investigate the environment

and Earth Systems through inquiry-based activities. The focus of this workshop is soil. Teachers will participate in activities that will allow their

students to investigate the major effect soil has on our environment, including water, atmosphere, climate, plants and animals. Through hands-

on soil investigations and data collection, students will begin to understand how important soil is to every ecosystem on Earth.

allow their students to investigate local weather, climate, and atmospheric composition and how these vary from place to place, season to

season, year to year.

GLOBE is an international science program which brings together scientists, teachers, and students of all ages to investigate the environment

and Earth Systems through inquiry-based activities. The focus of this workshop is hydrology. Teachers will participate in activities that will help

their students learn that water not only covers approximately 70% of the Earth’s surface, but also sustains plant and animal life, plays a key role

in the formation of weather, and helps to shape the surface of the planet through erosion and other processes.

choice, and establishing purpose to the process. Participants will be able to understand and implement service learning utilizing the S.T.A.R.S.

model. Participants will also learn how to apply to in-district mini-grants to support their service learning projects.
