Rules for the Degree of Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.)
1. Status
The M. Phil. Degree shall have the status of an intermediate degree between the
first Post-Graduate and the Doctorate Degree. This degree will have both research
and theory course components, It will give the students adequate training for
advanced research and thorough literature survey.
2. Admissions
Admission to the M. Phil. Course shall be made at the beginning of the first term
or the second term depending upon whether the admission is for regular course or
vacational course.
3. Eligibility
An applicant seeking admission to the M. Phil. course in any subject must have
obtained a Master's Degree with 50 % marks from this or any other recognized
University.
4. Duration of the Course
The M. Phil. Course can be completed either on Full-time basis as regular student
or on a vacational basis, depending upon the availability of the programme in the
University/College.

a) Full-time Course
The duration of the regular full-time M. Phil. course shall be two terms.
The student has to complete the terms during the year of admission to the M. Phil.
Course.
b) Vacational Course
The duration of the vacational M. Phil. course shall be two academic
years. Such a vacational M. Phil. student shall have to devote a minimum period
of 4 months for his her studies at the M. Phil. Centre (Two summer and one winter
vactions)
The facility of vacational M. Phil. course shall be restricted to full-time
teachers from Senior Colleges within the jurisdiction of the North Maharashtra
University, Jalgaon or other universities in Maharashtra. They will have to
submit a certificate of their employer to that effect alongwith the application form
for admission.
5. The criteria for granting admission to the Vacational M. Phil. Programme in all
the faculties will be as follows.
a) Preference will be given to the Senior College Lecturers working in the North
Maharashtra University Colleges.
b) Second preference will be given to the Senior College Lecturers working in
Colleges affiliated to recognized Universities other than North Maharashtra
University in Maharashtra.
The admissions under the above categories will be made on the basis of
experience and merit in each category.

6. The maximum period of registration for M. Phil. Course.
The maximum period of registration for regular M. Phil. student shall be 3 (three)
years and 4 (four) years for vacational students, after which the registration shall
stand cancelled.
If a regular M.Phil. candidate's dissertation is ready after the completion of 3
years (after completion of four years in case of vacational students) he/she may be
allowed to submit his/her dissertation within the period of six months by paying the
normal tuition fees due for one year for fresh registration. In such case the Dean of
the faculty should certify it. If a candidate fails to submit his/her dissertation during
the period as mentioned above, he/she be allowed to submit his/her dissertation
within a period of next six months by paying Rs. 500/-. After this the registration
stands cancelled.
7. Content.
The M. Phil. Course programme shall consist of:
(i) Three courses one on Research Methodology and two on the advanced topic
of the subject.
(ii) A dissertation, based on the project work assigned to an individual student.
