GPS Project
Timeline:
1. Reserve GPS Devices
2. Students read book using Literature Circles.
3. Students will review Latitude and Longitude with teachers.
4. ____________________ View GPS video “Earth Science: Mapping the Earth” on
UnitedStreaming Video. Students will need to view this video prior to GPS activity.
5. _____________________ Students will participate in Google Earth Activity. The
students will then search for the name of one of the state that the Watsons went
to in the book. They will use waypoints (latitude and longitude). Classes need to sign
up for 1 hour blocks anytime during the school day.
6. _____________________ Pick up GPS units and charge batteries.
7. Create caches depicting the symbols found in the book. There will be 5 caches to be
found.
8. ______________________ GPS Hide & Seek Activity Instruction – Small group
instruction for students with the GPS devices.
Materials: GPS devices, activity sheets, clipboards, pencils, old shoes, whistles
9. ______________________ Rain Make Up Day for GPS Hide & Seek Activity
10. _____________________ Teachers will discuss proper attire for GPS activity. (Old
shoes, warm dress, long pants, shoes over toes, hats and mittens if needed, jacket, etc.
Dress Warmly!)
11. _____________________ Hide Caches
12. _____________________ The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963/GPS Activity
Classes will use the GPS devices to search for the novel caches. Each class will sign
up for a 1 ½ hour time slot.
Materials: GPS devices, Watsons GPS activity sheet, clipboard, pencils, old shoes,
whistles
13. ______________________ Rain Make Up Day for The Watsons/GPS Activity.
14. Using the cache sheet, students will complete the symbol sheet for the novel.
