perinatal morbidity or mortality, and suitable for study through the UKOSS mechanism.
Applications are invited by 18th April 2008 using the form available on the UKOSS website. Interviews
for short-listed candidates will be held on 15th May at the RCOG.

Risk factors for peripartum hysterectomy in the UK
The paper detailing the risk factors for peripartum hysterectomy identified in the recent UKOSS study
was published in the January edition of Obstetrics and Gynecology (
abstract/111/1/97). Women who had one previous delivery by caesarean had a doubling of the risk
of peripartum hysterectomy compared to women who had no caesarean deliveries (odds ratio 2.1,
95% confidence interval 1.4-3.3); women who had two or more caesarean deliveries had a more than
eighteen times increase in risk (odds ratio 18.6, 95% confidence interval 7.7-45.4). Women with twin
pregnancies, older mothers, and those who already had three or more children were also at a higher
 risk of having a hysterectomy.
If you don’t have access to the paper and would like a reprint, please email us.

                                           Annual UKOSS returns 2007
You will find enclosed with this newsletter an annual UKOSS report for your hospital, indicating
the percentages of cards and forms that have been returned during 2007. The graphs below
show these data on a national basis, so you can compare yourselves with other units. The
figures above the bars indicate the number of hospitals in the UK returning that number of
cards/forms. Thus 126 hospitals have returned all twelve of their monthly report cards, and 114
hospitals have completed between 90% and 100% of their forms. A really impressive 92% of
units have returned 10 or more monthly report cards, and three in five hospitals have returned
more than 80% of forms as well. Thank you once again for all your efforts.
Fourteen hospitals have not yet returned any of their forms for 2007. Please dig them out of your
in trays to stop us bothering you any more!
