ABSTRACT
Title: Vietnam X
Author: Naomi Bennett
Research area: Theater and Communications
Guidance Committee Chair & Dept: Harley Erdman, Theater
Guidance Committee Member & Dept: Jane Smith, Communication
The Vietnam War has had an effect on both our parents who lived through it and the
second generation who grew up in its wake. Vietnam X is comprised of a cast of three
actors who will work as a collaborative ensemble in the creation of this new work. The
script will be created by the cast through improvisations, automatic writings, and various
movement and storytelling exercises. The cast, along with Miriam Gilbert as dramaturge
and myself as director, will work together in rehearsals to generate material using the
research for inspiration. Research includes interviews, personal stories, music, poetry,
photography, and film. In addition, the actors will be asked to bring in source material,
including their own personal experiences and reactions to how the Vietnam War has
affected them personally and as a society. After the first initial creation/rehearsal period,
Miriam will take the material that has been generated in rehearsal to transcribe and edit it
into a written script. This script will then be used when we resume rehearsals in mid-
April in preparation for the final performance. As a new play, Vietnam X is meant to
show the range of perspectives and effects that the Vietnam War has had on our
generation that often go unnoticed. The Vietnam War is a topic that is often not discussed
and even less its effects on the current generation. This project will create a safe place to
explore ideas and sentiments about the Vietnam War and also encourage those who
attend the performances to continue the discussion with others.
