More than 1,200 people from across Culver City and around the world came

to bid a final arrivederci Tuesday to Albert Vera Sr., the beloved three-time mayor and

owner of the popular Sorrento Italian Market who died at his home last week after suf-

fering a massive heart attack.

Vera was 75 years old.

The pews inside St. Augustine Catholic Church near downtown were packed

with mourners. To accommodate the overflow crowd, officials beamed a live broadcast

of the services to a wide-screen TV in the nearby banquet hall for those who couldn’t

get a seat inside the church.

Like Vera himself, the service was warm but unpretentious. Father Kevin

Nolan, St. Augustine’s pastor, delivered a moving eulogy that praised the former mayor

for a lifetime of devotion to his family, country, religious groups and thousands of local

Vera was “a patriarch of our community who loved his neighbors and his city,”

Nolan said.

“Albert wanted to share the ‘meal of life’ with everyone,” Nolan added,

Father Nolan was the primary speaker at the ceremony. In keeping with Vera’s

It has been over a year since the City of Culver City started the Culver City

Bicycle and Pedestrian Initiative, with the goal of creating a Bicycle and

Pedestrian Master Plan to encourage and improve walking and biking in our city.

The plan has the potential to create safer and more accessible bicycle and pedes-

trian facilities and policies, which will lead to positive benefits for mobility, public

health and the environment.

The Plan was released on the Culver City Walk Bike website

(www.ccwalkbike.org) on May 28th and will be discussed at the final Community

Meeting on June 12th. At 10 am in the Garden Room at Veteran's Park, 4117

This meeting is a major opportunity to learn and provide feedback on the

entire plan, which includes policies and maps. Past workshops, held have all

been part of an iterative process that will culminate in the June 12th, 2010 meet-

ing.

In order to help create the Plan the City appointed a Public Advisory

Committee. Over the last year, not only have there been public meetings, but the

Public Advisory Committee (PAC) has outreached at major Culver City events

(Fiesta La Ballona, Summer Concert Series, Farmers Market) and presented at

various community organizations, school groups and neighborhood associations.

In addition, information has been displayed at the Culver City Library, inside

Culver City busses, and on the Ballona Creek Path. Recently, the PAC and Los

Angeles County Bicycle Coalition hosted a very well attended Historical Walk in

partnership with the Culver City Historical Society and a Family Bike Ride. These

events totaled over 110 participants.

Dear Richard and Henry:

I wanted to take this opportunity

to write to you and thank you both for so

very much.

" Thank you for volunteering hun-

could have been at home with your own

families, but instead, you treated the

the kids, sometimes at the same time;

dence in the children, and giving them

the belief that they could indeed, do any-

thing;

" Thank you for setting a positive

example for the children. In a game

where negative examples are far too

prevalent, you both exhibited the kind of

attitude and demeanor that is so often

missing in organized kids' sports; and

opportunity to coach alongside you, an

Success is a difficult word to

define. Were the 2010 Culver City Major

Pirates successful?

There's no question, they cer-

tainly were. And without question, you

two were a significant reason for our suc-

cess.

I think that that the Pirate parents would

agree that you two are certainly not

dreamers. Your work ethic was a great

example to our kids.

fellow human beings."

Two-time GRAMMY award-winning guitarist Laurence Juber returns to

Boulevard Music in Culver City for a live performance on Saturday, June 12 at 8

guitarist for Paul McCartney's 'Wings' (winner, Best Rock Instrumental GRAMMY
