GERIATRIC CARE

Building a Center of Excellence

A

s you may know, the number of

people at or approaching age 65

and older is growing each year.

In fact, more than 50% of the patients at

Mercy & Unity Hospitals are over the

age of 65.

This means that in order to provide the best care to

our patients, all clinicians need to become more

knowledgeable to the unique needs of older patients

and the conditions that may need medical attention.

Early in 2006, Mercy & Unity Hospitals established a

Geriatric Center of Excellence. The goal of the Center

is to develop and implement a comprehensive program

to meet the needs of our older patients.

Through the philanthropic endeavors of Mercy &

Unity Hospitals Foundation, we have begun providing

education to clinicians specific to the caring of older

adults in areas such as pain management, eating Specialized glasses help nurses understand the different vision

difficulties, walking, falls prevention, and dementia. problems that elderly people encounter.

Programs that are now in place are the Nurses

Improving Care to Health System Elders and the

Geriatric Related-Care Improvement Program, both

of which incorporate best care practices for the

older adult.

UNITY INTENSIVE

CARE UNIT (ICU)

Teams Up With Local Girl Scout Troop

To Give Back To Patients

N

ot many of us are challenged with

the problem of what to do with a

gift of money. Unity ICU was

fortunate enough to have been faced with

this situation after two donations were

given to the unit from patients’ families.

The ICU Nursing Council discussed several ideas for

using the donations to help patients. The Council

selected a service project of Girl Scout Troop 1226

in the Andover/Anoka area – making colorful polar

fleece blankets for patients to use while in the hospital

and to take home.

Since the project was introduced, more than 50

blankets have been given to patients. The Girl Scouts

participating in this project are able to count their

hours toward the Girl Scouts Silver Award which

consists of creating a service project that gives back to

the community.

“The response has been incredible from patients and

families,” according to Natasha Petersen, staff nurse.

A recent patient stated, “I want to thank you for the

great fleece blanket. I’m lying on the sofa reading a

book right now with it wrapped around me. I think of

you all and smile when I use it, which is all the time.

Thanks again for your care…”

For additional information on this project, contact

Beth Dusenka, RN at 763.236.4200.

CRYSTAL BALL

O

n April 1, 2006, the Courtyards of

Andover was transformed into a

seascape with the theme of “Under

the Sea.” Guests were dressed in tropical

attire, splashed with color, adding to the

ambience of the evening.

They not only enjoyed the entertainment of the

Hawaiian Islanders but were also treated to hula

lessons! Everyone enjoyed an evening of dinner,

entertainment, silent and live auctions, and other

special treats. The live auction generated competitive

bidding for tropical trips, relaxing weekends, a lawn

tractor, a grand piano, a plasma TV, and for the first

time, a Wall of Wine donated by individual members

of Mercy & Unity Hospitals Medical Staff.

This year’s event proceeds were used to support the

Kenny Kids Pediatric Rehabilitation Program for a new,

handicap accessible playground and the Unity

Women’s and Children’s Program. An evening

highlight was when Joel Guptill, an exuberant 10 year

old from Blaine, spoke to the audience about the need

for an accessible playground. Joel, who is in the

Pediatric Rehabilitation Program, told of the

importance of a playground for the therapy of children

with disabilities….and our guests responded with a

standing ovation for Joel and an outpouring of

generosity.

More than 600 individuals attended the Ball

which was presented by the Minnesota Vikings.

A record $160,000 was raised for the two

programs.
