CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. The Background of The Study
Human in the society needs language. It is a tool to help people
make communications to each other. There are many languages that exist in
the world. English becomes a language that is used by people in the world. It
plays an important role in the world as an international language. As
international language, English has its popularity all over the world including
in Indonesia. English is studied for science, politics, and as a school subject.
It means that English as the global language is seriously learned by many
people, because by mastering English, they can reach a good prospect for
future. People should master it as a communication.
Considering the needs of mastering English, teaching English in
Indonesia now is expanding from the basic level as the local content and must
be learnt by the students as compulsory school subject in all levels to
University. Junior high school is the intermediate levels in teaching English.
In this level built the basic knowledge and motivating them in learning English
language by considering their need of his language in the future. That is not an
easy job; there are many challenges during the process. Teacher must be able to
teach in creative ways to encourage students, motivation, which can guide them
into the successful teaching learning process

In secondary school is the place for students to learn English for
the second time, after they learn the basic vocabulary in elementary school.
Vocabulary is very important to be mastered first since it is an essential
means in conducting communication. Based on the reason above, the focus
should be on the vocabulary in the junior high school, because vocabulary is
the basic of four skills, there are writing, speaking, reading and listening.
English teaching involves of four language skills, they are listening, speaking,
seading and writing. In teaching and learning a language, there are four
aspects that support four language skill above such as: grammar, vocabulary,
spelling and pronunciation that are also taught in English teaching and
learning process.The basic skill vocabulary can help them understand the
basis of studying English and prepare to study English in higher level.
Vocabulary is the first component that must be learnt by young
learners in learning English. Teaching and learning process of English in the
junior high school is one phenomenon, either for student or teacher. It is
logical if the students often find difficulties in learning the language,
especially in vocabulary. It can not be separated from other elements of
English in teaching learning process in junior high school because vocabulary
can give influence to the ability of the students in studying English.
Without sufficient vocabulary, we can not communicate and
express the idea easily both oral and written form. Student will get difficulty
in doing the examination and get poor score. In fact student in elementary
school just get the basic of vocabulary and so limited, when we entered in

secondary school they just have poor vocabulary and its make uninterested in
learning English. The students in secondary school can we call teen’s
learners. Brown (2001: 92) states that the “terrible teens” are an age of
transition, confusion, self-consciousness, growing, and changing bodies and
minds. What a challenge for the teacher.
To be more effective in teaching vocabulary, the teacher should apply
various teaching techniques to increase the motivation of the students; one of
them is using multimedia. Multimedia will help young learners feel amused
in certain learning situation. In other ways, the students can learn the
materials easily. There are many ways of using multimedia, such as video,
power point or slideshow, film, etc.
Realizing of these benefits of using multimedia in English teaching
the writer is interested in describing teaching process of English vocabulary
by multimedia in Junior high school, especially at the seventh year students
of SMP Maria Assumpta Klaten in 2011. The writer would like to know the
condition, situation, and the students’ responses of teaching using
multimedia especially by using power point.
B. The Reason for Choosing the Topic
The reasons for choosing the topic are as follows:
1. It is crucial to find out how to teach vocabulary effectively at Junior High
School to improve the students’ achievement in memorizing new
vocabulary.

2. Most of the students do not have the list of difficult words. By using
multimedia there will be more interaction between the teacher and the
students in the process of teaching English vocabulary.
C. The Problem of the Study
Based on the description above, the writer formulates the problem
of the study as follows: “How is the process of teaching vocabulary by using
multimedia to the seventh year students of SMP Maria Assumpta Klaten in
2011”?
D. The Limitation of The Study
Here, the writer wants to limit the study. The limitation of the
study is as follows:
1. This study is limited to seventh year students of SMP Maria Assumpta
Klaten in 2011.
2. This study focuses on teaching English vocabulary process by using
multimedia, especially power point.
E. The Aim of The Study
In this study, the writer has two aims of the study as follows:
1. To know the process of teaching vocabulary by using multimedia to the
seventh year students of SMP Maria Assumpta Klaten in 2011.
2. To give contribution in teaching learning vocabulary using multimedia.

F. The Use of the Study
From the result of this study, the writer hopes that it will have
significance in relation to the teaching and learning English. The findings of
the study are expected to be useful for English teacher and students, those
are:
1. Theoretical use
The study can increase the repertoire of teaching vocabulary in junior high
school.
2. Practical use
The study can be used to develop the way of teaching English especially in
teaching vocabulary by using multimedia.
G. The Clarification of the Key Term
Teaching vocabulary by using multimedia to the seventh year
students of SMP Maria Assumpta Klaten in 2011 is the title of this thesis.
In order to make the title easy to understand, the writer clarifies the terms
of the study as follows:
1. Teaching English Vocabulary
Brown (1994: 7) states that teaching is guiding and facilitating
learning, enabling the learner to learn, setting the condition for
learning. Vocabulary is very important in learning a new language.
The students usually have difficulties in using the language if they are
lacking of vocabulary. In addition, according to Oxford dictionary it is

stated that vocabulary is all the words known to a person or used in
particular books, subjects, etc ( Hornby, 1995: 1331). So, teaching
vocabulary by using multimedia is guiding and facilitating learning,
enabling the learner to learn, setting the condition for learning a new
language by using media of communication.
2. Multimedia
According to Hornby (1995: 764) multimedia is involving several
different methods of communication or form of expression: a
multimedia event including music, dance, video and a laser show.

H. The Organization of the Study
It is important to present the organization of the thesis in order to
be easily understood. In this thesis, the writer divides the content of this
thesis into five chapters is as follows:
Chapter I is introduction. It consists of the background of the
study, the reason for choosing the topic, the problem of the study, the aim
of the study, the uses of the study, the limitation of the study, and the
organization of the study.
Chapter II is review of related literature. It discusses about the
status of Teaching English in Junior High School, The meaning of
Vocabulary, Teaching by using multimedia, The Advantages of using
multimedia, Teaching Vocabulary by using multimedia.

Chapter III is the method of the study. It consist of the meaning of
the research method, the strategy of the study, the subject of the study, the
data and the source of the data, the technique of collecting the data, the
validity of the data, the technique of analyzing the data.
Chapter IV is the result of the study. It consists of consist of the
analysis of data and the discussion of the findings the data
Chapter V is conclusion and suggestion. It consists of the
conclusion and suggestion.
