Notes
• This story, set during Doctor Who’s 17th season, when
Douglas Adams was the programme’s script editor,
contains several references to Adams’ work: the
Doctor claims that he and Romana are researchers
for "a well-known guide for the space traveller on a
budget", and saves the day with a towel.
• The Doctor’s list of notable people who have
attended Vita Novus includes "evolutionary
biologists" and "tired TV producers". Lalla Ward,
who plays Romana and reads this story, is married to
evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins and "tired

Series Doctor Who • An early Second Doctor serial had the working title
Release number 4 The Beautiful People, but was later renamed The
