Absence Policy
The following is a summary statement of the absence policy for the 2006-2007
Academic Year:
Students are expected to attend all sessions of classes for which they are
registered. Any necessary deviations from this expectation must be reported by
the student to the professor of the class to be missed. All absences are
categorized as "excused" or "unexcused." The following information provides
information regarding these absences:
Excused absences
Only granted in the cases of the following: admittance to a hospital, serious
emotional illness (verified by the VPSL), absence approved through the
Administrative Absence program, death or hospitalization of an immediate family
member (mother, father, brother, sister, or grandparent), or very unusual
circumstances as evaluated by the professor. Course requirements missed
because of excused absences may be made up by the student.
Unexcused absences
Must not exceed one classroom hour per credit hour of the course without
penalty and the course requirements missed because of an unexcused absence
may not be made up by the student. The penalty for excessive unexcused
absences is communicated in each course syllabus. Unexcused absences could
be used for situations such as travel difficulties, conflicting schedules,
oversleeping, minor sickness, doctor or dentist appointments, and job interviews.
Note: When a student registers for a course during the drop/add period, the class
sessions missed prior to the student registering for the course count as
unexcused absences.
20% Absence Policy
The policy states that if a student’s absences exceed 20% of the class sessions
(excused and unexcused absences), the student shall be dropped from the class
role.

Administrative Absences
The policies regarding administrative absences remain the same. Administrative
Absences are considered excused absences. Persons who are granted an
administrative absence are reminded that they are required to communicate with
the teachers of their courses regarding assignments, etc. Failure to do so may
result in a penalty, not because of the absence but because the student did not
fulfill the required responsibilities that come with the administrative absence
program.
