2009 - 2010 Summer Newsletter

PRESIDENT’S REPORT Mike Daigle

In Thunder Bay, the summers are always too short, and for this year, the great weather has unfortunately been too little and far

between. I truly hope that you are making the best of it. With this said, it is always comforting to know that we have a great indoor

winter facility ready to occupy our time over the winter. We are always looking forward to seeing everyone back in the fall.

Again this year, we are happy to see the return of both the Men's and Ladies Major Leagues, on Wednesday and Thursday nights

respectively. These two leagues highlight the best of the city's competitive curlers, in their quest to compete at the Provincial and

National levels.

This said, the Port Arthur Curling & Athletic Club will be the proud host of the 2010 Ontario Scotties Championship, which will

be held from January 3 to 10, 2010. This will showcase the best of women's curling in Ontario, in their final pursuit for a berth in

the National Scott Tournament of Hearts. An organizing committee is now in place, and we are working toward hosting a special

event which best exemplifies the PACC and our community on the provincial curling stage.

An event such as the Ontario Scotties does not run itself, and we are looking to our membership, as well as the community at large,

to come forth and volunteer your time in some capacity in order to make this event a memorable one, not only for the participants,

but also the visitors and spectators. I invite you to please complete the Volunteer Registration Form, which is included with this

Newsletter. Your participation, no matter how big or small, will only help ensure that the 2010 Provincial Scotties tournament is

a success.

Also, I am happy to report that our electrical service upgrade has now been completed. As you may recall, this was made

possible through an Ontario Trillium Fund grant, and the efforts of Brian McLeod and John Ellsworth.

This year’s Board of Directors election was again a success, as we had eight people running for positions. In the end, I am happy

to welcome back past presidents, Len Carr, Ray Pilon (Building & Property) and John Ellsworth (Mixed) to the Board, on whom

I know I can rely on their experience, knowledge and insight with respect to the operation of the club. Further, I would like to

welcome Kevin Roberts (Finance), John Cameron (Publicity & Bonspiels), Leo Favreau (Juniors) and Richard Gagliardi

(Entertainment) to the Board of Directors, who join Pat Gain (Membership & Draw), Ben Mikkelsen (Marketing & Fundraising),

and Mike Salatino (Ice).

A further thank you must be extended to Ray Meadows, Bev Junilla, 2009/2020 Board of Directors

Sharon Gibbon, David Lewkoski, Dennis Dacey and Kenneth Sundell for

Mike Daigle President

their time and efforts over the past few years. It is a commitment, and

Len Carr Vice President

your efforts are appreciated.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT (Cont. from page 1) Mike Daigle

You will note that some of the chairs have changed this year. A review of the past portfolios brought us to a conclusion that change

was needed in order to continue moving forward. We had to shift some of our direction in order to meet new and current

challenges. This said, we have amalgamated the Membership and Draw chairs, and discontinued the House and Ice Rental

portfolios, as these are under the responsibility of our Club Manager, Don Lammi.

The new portfolios that have now been created are 'Publicity & Bonspiels' and 'Marketing & Fundraising', in which Ben and John

will have a significant role in their development.

Finally, I just want to remind you that the bar is currently open from Wednesdays to Saturdays (summer hours), so after work, your

golf game, gardening, or however you are occupying your time this summer, drop on by the club for a quick beverage, and say Hi

to everybody.

Looking forward to seeing you in September. Please feel free to contact me, if you have any concerns or ideas you wish to discuss.

Best regards

FINANCE REPORT Kevin Roberts

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer now that warmer weather has finally arrived! Not much to report in the Finance

position at this point as we prepare for the July 31st year end. The real challenge comes as we begin to work out the details of

our final budget for 2009/2010. In the meantime, enjoy all that summer has to offer because in just a few short months you'll be

back on the ICE!

Cheers.

ICE REPORT Mike Salatino

I hope everyone is having a good summer.

We are going to start putting the ice in, in the not so distant future. We have made up an ice maintenance schedule which we are

hoping will help ensure consistant ice throughout the season. If you have any comments or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to

discuss with me.

See you when curling starts.

MANAGER’S REPORT Don Lammi

Hello fellow members, hope you are having a good summer. As the summer winds down, the office continues to prepare for the

upcoming season. All of our leagues received tentative schedules for their respective executives to go over, and the calendar

continues to be filled in as each league settles on their dates.

Mens nights continue to fill up, and a reminder to all mens members that if you want to ensure your team curls on its preferred

night, to come by the club to register your team. There will be two registration nights on August 26th and 27th for those teams or

individuals that wish to come in and put down a deposit for their night.

Thanks for everyone's support over this past year, as I continue to grow into my role as club manager. See you in the fall.

MIXED CURLING REPORT John Ellsworth

Hello all you fine mixed curlers. I hope you are enjoying your summer. I know the weather has not been the best. But I hope August

brings enjoyable summer days.

It's that time of the year again. The PACC is hosting a registration night on August 26 & 27. If you register by the 27th., you will

be eligible to win your entry fee back. So if possible please take advantage of that early bird opportunity.

As for the curling season, the novice clinic is scheduled for early October. Details will be posted.

The Halloween 2-ender and the Christmas funspiel are events that will see some interesting changes this year. Details will be

afforded at a later date.

This year many events will be planned to make your curling experience enjoyable. I am open to new ideas and suggestions. Please

do not hesitate to contact me at jellzie@sympatico.ca.

One concern is the number of cancelled games. If you have any ideas please contact me.

The registration form is available at our website at pa-curling club.com. Please fill out completely including your e-mail address.

Last year we tried to increase our e-mail database. This enables the club to keep the membership informed with regards to any

events or special occasions that occur at the club.

In January the PACC is hosting the Ontario Scotties. The dates are Jan. 3-10. Hopefully it should not disrupt the mixed curling

schedule too much.

I hope to see you next year. Please enjoy the remainder of the summer.

Best regards

BUILDING AND PROPERTY Ray Pilon

First off, thanks to all who voted for me and made my return to the board possible.

Building and Property is a new portfolio for me but being on the board when John Kruzik was there was a good role model to

follow. That being said, John Kruzik has agreed to sit on my volunteer committee. Thanks John.

We will need help throughout the year for some projects, so beware, you can run but you can’t hide.

This year’s board, made up of some new, some remaining and some returning directors, already seems to be moving right along

and we are there to serve you. Call me anytime if you see something that needs doing. My number is 474 - 7797.

ENTERTAINMENT Richard Gagliardi

Hi Everyone

This year we held the Second Annual Rod Fikis Memorial Golf Tournament at Strathcona Golf Course on Aug. 15th.; the

tournament scheduled for June 13th was cancelled due to lack of response. We will try to get a few more curlers/golfers

interested next summer.

I hope everyone is having a great summer and I look forward to seeing you all either at the golf tournament or in the upcoming

curling season.

ONTARIO SCOTTIES 2010 REPORT

For those of you that are not aware yet, the Port Arthur Curling & Athletic Club is proud to be hosting the 2010 Ontario Scotties

Provincial Championships from January 3rd to 10th of 2010. This endeavour is a major undertaking by our club, and work is

underway currently in preparation for this prestigious event. A committee is in place to prepare all the various plans and logistics

required for an event of this size. The committee would like to stress to all curlers in our city, that if you wish to volunteer in any

capacity, that the committee would love your support. Attached to this newsletter is a volunteer form, which we encourage you

to fill out with your information, and bring it by the club, so we may make plans for the many volunteers we will definitely need.

More details will emerge as the season commences, so watch for details on the club's website, as well as many other forums. For

those businesses or individuals that wish to commit to a sponsorship package of some sort, please contact the office at 344-0111,

and we will be glad to discuss all options available to you. Have a good summer, and remember we need your support to make

this yet another successful curling event in our city.

Respectfully submitted

Your Ontario Scotties 2010 Committee

MEMBERSHIP AND DRAW Pat Gain

I hope all you Men's members are having a good summer, and that summer has started for real by the time you read this. We have

about 33% of our Men's teams registered thus far. The teams that are already registered are noted further on in this newsletter, and

will be on our web site . Please register individually or as a team as soon as possible. When you do register

please include your e-mail address and locker number from last year.

Note that there will be special registration nights on August 26th and 27th, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., designed to quickly process

you or your team. If you haven't already registered, please take advantage of this opportunity

Tuesday and Wednesday nights are over 50% full, so if you want to curl on those nights you'd better hustle. There are more

openings on the Monday and Thursday nights, but it is extremely important to get your team registered before we start renting

out the unused ice.

If you are not currently on a team, please give us a call, or come down to the club and leave us your name. Several teams last year

were desperately looking for players.

Special Finder's Fee: Remember you can receive a $25 credit on your account for each new member you bring into the club.

The dues structure is listed below. A team only needs to put down a $200 deposit (per night) to register.

Please encourage all your friends and co-workers to join our club.

Curling will start on Thursday Sept 24th with the Oktoberfest Bonspiel on Sept 25th-27th. We still need a few Squad Sponsors,

it is a great deal, so please give me a call to discuss. All our members are encouraged to support those businesses that sponsor and

help out our club.

PUBLICITY AND BONSPIELS John Cameron

In my role as Bonspiel and Publicity Chair, I am looking at building on the success of bonspiels hosted by the club. Like member-

ship, bonspiels are a key to maintaining the future of the Port Arthur Curling Club as both are primary revenue generators for the club.

This year, the PACC will once again be hosting five bonspiels over the course of the season, and your participation would be

greatly appreciated.

The five bonspiels are as follows:

Oktoberfest Bonspiel - September 25 - 27, 2009

Grey Cup Bonspiel - November 26 - 29, 2009

Super Bowl Bonspiel - February 4 - 7, 2010

Hospitality Bonspiel - March 5 -7, 2010

Last Chance Mixed Bonspiel - April 16 -17, 2010

The format for bonspiels has changed over the years. The round robin group format to separate teams into four events has proven

popular. Curlers entering bonspiels get value for their money with 4 games guaranteed and an opportunity to win an event prize for

teams entered. However, with that said, if there is a better format let me know, and changes can be made if they make the spiel better.

Getting teams to sign up before deadlines has become a concern for bonspiel organizers. It is difficult to run bonspiels without

knowing the type of budget you may be working with. An uncertain budget for a spiel impacts the prize structure, entertainment

and hospitality (food etc.) for all participants and it can make or break the weekend. I encourage our member PACC curlers to sign

up early. This will also help attract other teams from other clubs when they see the list for a spiel is starting to get full.

Volunteers are always needed to help run bonspiels. If anyone is interested in helping out with any of the spiels, the Chairs of the

bonspiels would welcome your assistance.

Posters will be put up early to provide notice of upcoming events, so remember, sign up early and help make our bonspiels the

best they can be. Also, your input on how we can improve or better promote our spiels or club events is always welcome.

It's that time of year again---PACC NFL Football Pool. It's easy, just pick the winners each week and your winning picks are accu-

mulated. We have weekly winners, year end winners. We paid 12 top spots last year, and $5 of each entry is applied to our perfect

week pot. In other words, if you pick all the winners for a week, you qualify for the perfect week pot and all who have picked

perfectly will share the pot. There was no perfect pick last year, so the pot has a $560 carryover. Entry fee is $80 for the year.
