Topographic maps
- show the surface features of an area
- view the land from above (looking down)
- show elevation, relief,
slope

Contour lines – connect points of equal
elevation

Contour interval – the change of elevation
from one contour line to another
(Ex. Every
20 feet)
Topographical Maps
Index contour – a contour line that is drawn
thicker and darker. (usually every 5th one)
- it is labeled with
round numbers
(Ex. 200 ft.)
Topographical Maps
To figure out the topography of an area you
look at the contour lines
Closely spaced contour lines = steep slopes
Widely spaced contour lines = gentle slopes
or flat areas

Closed loop with no lines inside = hilltop
Closed loop with dashes inside = depression
or hollow
