TEACHING
Heart of America Shakespeare Festival
Camp Shakespeare - ages 8 to 14 - Camp Shakespeare is a unique and lively way for young
people to discover the basics of bringing the written word to life through the works of the world’s greatest
playwright. Campers are given an experience full of self-expression, confidence, creativity and teamwork.
Campers participate in acting games and exercises, physical games and techniques, Renaissance dance,
improvisation, poetry work, sword and costume design, stage combat, vocal techniques, and arts and
crafts. We explore the history of Shakespeare’s life and times and how it compares to our own. We also
visit with professional actors, who rehearse their work for a performance of scenes and an abbreviated
version of the Festival’s 2006 performance
Shakespeare Exploration - ages 14 -18 - This conservatory-style workshop includes in-depth
acting highlighting vocal, physical, and acting techniques useful in performing Shakespeare. Young
actors focus on acting exercises, text work, rehearsal and performance of monologues, scenes, and a 40
minute production preformed on the actual stage used by the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival.
The Coterie Theatre
Foundations of Acting - This Coterie acting class uses vocal and physical warm-ups, theatre games
and dramatic improvisation to develop acting technique and stage presence. The instructor is a trained
actor who will help students grow in self-confidence as they develop observation, concentration and
performance skills necessary for an actor
Advanced Acting/Scene Study – This class is for students who have taken other acting classes or
have had some prior experience in theatre. Serious students of acting take such a class as often as their
schedule allows. Young actors have the opportunity to work on scenes from plays in roles matching their
age and type in this popular Coterie class. All students will have the opportunity to be considered for roles
in Coterie productions as well as for a position in the Coterie Master Class in Acting.
Audition Lab - This unique Coterie class offers young actors an opportunity to polish their monologues
for theatre auditions, class placement, college entrance and/or scholarship auditions. Students explore new
audition monologues that match their age, personality and individual audition needs. Students will
develop successful strategies for cold readings, polish their audition pieces and prepare a professional
resume. Jeff Church, Producing Artistic Director for the Coterie, holds a special audition with class
members during the week.
Kansas City Repertory Theatre
Rep on the Road – week long in-school residencies integrating script analysis, character intent, and
stage production in an attempt to illustrate the transfer from the page to the stage. Literary selections
include 4 Shakespearean plays and four “American Masterworks” plays.
