Splash, October 2007 3 P I N K I N K BY Hello Readers, I DEVOTE THIS PAGE TO AN IMPORTANT CAUSE FOR FLORIDA AND THE FAIRNESS FOR ALL FAMILIES, PLEASE READ AND TAKE SOME ACTION. JP www.fairnessforallfamilies.org: Grassroots Opposition Growing to Block So-called ‘Marriage Amendment’. Citizens across Florida have mobilized on behalf of Fairness for All Families, a broad coalition opposing an amendment slated for the 2008 ballot that threatens to strip away legal rights, employee benefits and health coverage that families throughout the state rely on. Fairness for All Families has grown into a broad coalition of more than 160 organizations with Volunteer teams in 20 cities and on 17 college campuses. People from across the state are stepping forward to say “no” to this attempt to put discrimination in our constitution and take away protections from seniors, police, firefighters and thousands of unmarried Floridians, said Barbara A. DeVane, secretary of the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans and a founding member of Fairness for All Families. “This is a real grassroots effort to stop a measure that poses a real threat to Florida families,” said Gregory Wilson of Fairness for All Families. Volunteers across the state are hosting house parties to help raise funds and educate their friends and neighbors about the terrible impact this amendment would have on Florida seniors and unmarried couples. A diverse group of Florida leaders have joined Fairness for All Families. The campaign’s honorary board of directors includes: U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, former Department of Elder Affairs Secretary Bentley Lipscomb, and Florida NAACP President Adora Obi Nweze. These prominent Floridians will help guide a growing group of leaders that includes Florida Alliance for Retired Americans Secretary Barbara A. DeVane, Civic Concern Executive Director Pamela Burch Fort, Managing Director and Creative Director of Parsons-Wilson Gregory Wilson, Florida Consumer Action Network Executive Director Bill Newton, National NAACP board member Leon Russell, ACLU of Florida LGBT Advocacy Project Director Robert F. Rosenwald, Jr. and Equality Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith. “This measure could jeopardize health care and other employment benefits that many seniors and their families rely upon across the state,” said Lipscomb. “Everyone should stand against this attempt to make discrimination part of our state constitution,” said Nweze. “Why strip away health and partnership benefits already provided by many local governments and companies across the state?” she asked. “This amendment threatens the legal protections and benefits of families across Florida,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz. “I am honored to work with the campaign to ensure this attack on Florida families doesn’t become part of our constitution.” For more info or to host a party please go to www.fairnessforallfamilies.org or Fairness to Families P.O. I can’t decide which pal I like best, they both tug on my heart, but Dade likes CATS!! I can’t hang with him and hunt down squirrels and cats if he LIKES them! Pippi, on the other hand is a lot like me! She will not be caged and we both are tough girls who love to scare strangers, even though my owner knows I’m all bark and no bite, but hey, I gotta show strangers who the boss is, right? My name is Dade, and I am a proud Male Rottweiler mix, Adult dog. I am looking for a home with someone who is patient and willing to go to training classes with me. I am extremely loving, very playful and get along with children age 10 and over. I haven’t met any younger ones yet, but I might be a bit big. I get along with other dogs and even cats, I know that Bella, my new friend doesn’t like cats at ALL. I’m a great watchdog, I will kiss an intruder to death! I was returned because I was a little bit too much for my owners. I like digging and chewing and apparently that is not something humans like in a dog......hmm......I think I can still learn new tricks if you’re willing to work with me. Please meet me, I just wanna be loved by you. Hello, My name is Pippi, I am an adult female Labrador and Pit Bull mix. Even though people at the shelter say that I am an excellent dog, there are one or two issues that my new family has to be aware of. The first is, like Bella my new biatch friend, I really really can’t stand being in a kennel or a crate. I will bark and growl at people and look really dangerous even though I don’t mean it at all. I am really a super sweet girl, (Don’t tell Bella, I gotta save face)..I have just been without a real home and family for so long! I am getting some doggy training here, but I already know most of the basic commands. If you throw me balls and play with me I will be the happiest dog ever. Again like Bella, the home I am looking for must be mine alone, no other animals please as I don’t like them at all. I do well with children, but it would be better if they were a little older, say 8 plus, so that they can play rough and tumble with me; I am a big strong dog after all. Come and ask for me at the Humane Society so you and I can be introduced, please? Pippi didn’t know that I would proof read this column! Well- I still like her even though she’s not as tough as I am. If I could share a home, and she could share a home we could hang! He has become one of the more experienced Senators on drug policy, crime prevention, and civil liberties. Biden was instrumental in crafting significant federal crime laws over the last decade, including the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, aka the Biden Crime Law. He authored the landmark Violence Against Women Act of 1994 (VAWA), which contains a broad array of ground breaking measures to combat domestic violence and provides billions of dollars in federal funds to address gender-based crimes. Although part of this legislation was struck down as unconstitutional, it was reauthorized in 2000 and 2005. As chairman of the International Narcotics Control Caucus, Biden wrote the laws that created the nation’s “Drug Czar,” who oversees and coordinates national drug control policy. In April 2003 he introduced the controversial Reducing Americans’ Vulnerability to Ecstasy Act, the RAVE Act. He continues to work to stop the spread of so called, “date rape” drugs, such as Rohypnol, and drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine. In 2004 he worked to pass a bill outlawing steroids like androstenedione, the drug used by many baseball players. Biden’s legislation to promote college aid and loan programs allows families to deduct on their annual income-tax returns up to $10,000 per year in higher-education expenses. His Kids 2000 legislation established a public/private partnership to provide computer centers, teachers, Internet access, and technical training to young people, particularly to low-income and at-risk youth. Foreign Relations Committee- Biden is a long-time member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and has gained considerable expertise in foreign policy, national security, and arms control. In 1997, he became the ranking minority member and chaired the committee from June 2001 through 2003. His efforts to combat hostilities in the Balkans in the 1990s brought national attention and influenced presidential policy: traveling repeatedly to the region, he made one meeting famous by calling Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic a “war criminal.” He consistently argued for lifting the arms embargo, training Bosnian Muslims, investigating war crimes and administering NATO air strikes. Biden’s subsequent “lift and strike” resolution was instrumental in convincing President Bill Clinton to use military force in the face of systematic human rights violations. Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, Biden was supportive of the Bush administration efforts, calling for additional ground troops in Afghanistan and agreeing with the administration’s assertion that Saddam Hussein needed to be eliminated. The Bush administration rejected an effort Biden undertook with Senator Richard Lugar to pass a resolution authorizing military action only after the exhaustion of diplomatic efforts. In October 2002, Biden voted for the final resolution to support the war in Iraq. He has long supported the Bush Administration’s war effort and appropriations to pay for it, but has argued repeatedly that more soldiers are needed, the war should be internationalized, and the Bush administration should “level with the American people” about the cost and length of the war. The Biden-Gelb Plan for Iraq. In November 2006, Biden and Leslie Gelb, President Emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, released a comprehensive strategy to end sectarian violence in Iraq. Rather than continuing the present approach or withdrawing, the plan calls for “a third way that can achieve the two objectives most Americans share: to bring our troops home without leaving chaos behind. The key points include: Give Iraq its major groups their own regions and control over their daily lives. A central government in charge of common interests like defending the 10 Splash, October 2007 borders and distributing oil revenues. Secure the support of the Sunnis -- who have no oil -- by guaranteeing them a proportionate share of oil revenue and reintegrating those with no blood on their hands. Begin the phased redeployment of U.S. forces this year and withdraw most of them by 2008, with a small follow-on force to keep the neighbors honest and to strike any concentration of terrorists. Columnist Harry F. Themal, from Delaware’s The News Journal, reported that Biden “occupies the sensible center of the Democratic Party.” Themal concludes, “he plans to stress the dangers to the security of the average American, not just from the terrorist threat, but from the lack of health assistance, crime, and energy dependence on unstable parts of the world.” Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen wrote, Biden’s “manic-obsessive running of the mouth” could be the character weakness that disqualifies him. While speaking to a group of Indian-Americans in Delaware, Biden stated in regards to his relationship with the Indian-American community: “I’ve had a great relationship. In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian Americans - moving from India. You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking.” His comment was caught on C-SPAN. Biden especially drew criticism in the popular press for his evaluation of Senator Barack Obama; Biden was quoted in the New York Observer as saying: “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy, ... I mean, that’s a storybook, man.” The audio of the interview, posted on the Observer’s website, reportedly includes a significant pause after “African-American,” suggesting that the Observer’s transcript was misleading. Biden sought to clear up the controversy by apologizing to Obama on the same day and repeated his regret on The Daily Show that same evening: “Look, the other part of this thing that got me in trouble is using the word clean. I should have said fresh.” Some media observers labeled Biden’s announcement a “launch pad disaster.” Jesse Jackson telephoned Biden and reported afterward “Senator Biden...assured me that he regrets that his remarks were misinterpreted. He was serious and contrite. To me, this was a gaffe, not a statement about his philosophy or ideology.” ON THE ISSUESGay marriage- says its inevitable Iraq War Troops- supports phased withdrawal Death penalty- supports Universal Healthcareconsistantly votes for medicaid reform Constitutional ban on same sex- against He wants American troops on the ground in Darfur now. Please visit our website www.ncolorsalon.com or call 239.597.7005 The Classical Theatre of Harlem’s tour of Romeo and Juliet, brought to us by The Florida Rep, is uniquely imaginative and expertly edited. R&J can be tedious, especially for those who have seen the Bard’s best known and most loved drama many times, but this is not one of those times. Note I did not say tragedy, as usually attributed to this piece, for this production retains, exemplifies, and even embellishes on the original’s witty and saucy comic turns. Brought to SWFL as part of an educational experience to keep the classics alive, this performance does one better than what you remembered in high school or modern film: Those who don’t “get” Shakespeare, will get this Romeo and Juliet. Masterfully directed and brought to life by a small but mighty cast, this may be your favorite take on the story as well. The actors, especially the “Star Crossed Lovers” Juliet (Robin LeMon) and Romeo (Duane Allen) who play their parts with honest innocence and verbal ease, are so dedicated to their lines and meaning behind them, that one tends to forget they aren’t watching a story about modern Harlem (where we lay our scene). Exemplary moments are had by all, but unforgettable ones include: Troy Scarborough (Friar), Libya Pugh (Lady Capulet), and Tracy Jack (Benvolio). Roger C. went through the light on the other side and is now visiting a planet with a higher intelligence than ours and communicating telepathically with them, Continued... I told them I was born in a village called Caplan...I like scuba diving in Port Daniel and New Port, Quebec. They wanted to see in my mind a map of those areas! They asked me to show them... If I wanted to. I mentally showed them the map! They asked me where I took the energy to survive; I knew they where talking about food. I told them about the plants that we eat on earth and then they asked: Are you also eating what used to be alive? I said yes. They said: We knew there were primitive civilizations. They where surprised that someone coming from such a place could meet them on their planet! I asked the one in charge. Where do you take your energy to survive? He said: We take it from the cosmic power, but directly instead of going through natural interfaces as you do. I asked: Do you travel to other worlds? The same one said: Yes, and showed me a space ship, like an airplane but without wings. I asked him what kind of energy are you using to travel? He said: We are using a gravity generator to get almost unlimited speed! I talked about the problems we had on earth with great acceleration due to the G-Forces involved. He said: Our gravity generator affects the entire ship including people aboard, so there’s no G-Force affecting passengers or crew. I remember that physically, they where shorter than us, walked slowly, and didn’t have any hair. They had a strange uniform moulded to their skin as if it were part of it and hard to tell where it began and ended! They told me, we might go to see your planet in a near future but it is very far from here. I said, “be careful” and thanked them for their information. I went away from them at night and looked at the sky, there wasn’t any moon, but there were lots of stars. A few years later, local people and a couple of policemen saw a UFO in Caplan, Port Daniel, and New Port, on the same night. The same description, at the same time, in different cities. It was reported in the newspapers and described as the Concorde without wings, no noise, and hovering just above the ground. At that time, I was living in Montreal. Getting back to my experience, after looking at the stars from that planet, I decided to go back to my origin, the origin of everything, the Light...What a fantastic trip I thought! Going to the moon was as simple as crossing the street, and going to a planet a hundred light years away was as simple as going to the next village! I asked the light. Can I see less evolved planets? YES- and I was there. There were some primitive cave men (full of hair) chasing strange large animals. I tried to communicate with them, but they couldn’t see or hear me! It wasn’t too interesting there, so I decided to go back to the Light. Continued next issue... Sat.
