Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil, President of India on her visit to Brazil, Mexico and Chile. 13th – 22nd April 2008 In a first for a President of India, Pratibha Patil travelled with a business delegation recently covering 3 countries and 7 cities in South America (Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia in Brazil; Cancun, Mexico City and Guadalajara in Mexico and Santiago in Chile). Landing in Sao Paulo on 13 April, she chaired a business meeting between the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Federation of Industries of Sao Paulo (FIESP). Addressing a meeting packed with industry representatives from Sao Paulo and her business delegation, the President delivered her first ever address to industry representatives. Patil said that the meeting between FIESP and CII was a unique gathering of businesspersons representing two fast-growing economies. She added that bilateral trade between India and Brazil had trebled over the past 3 years to reach USD 3.12 billion. Delegation members in this 10 day visit included senior industry people from the following sectors: Auto industry, Tourism & Hospitality, Infrastructure, Mining, Oil & Gas, IT, Pharmaceuticals, Agri business; Bio Fuels, Chemicals & Fertilizers and Social Entrepreneurs. Mr. Madhur Bajaj, Chairman, CII – LAC Committee and Vice Chairman, Bajaj Auto, led the delegation in this 10-day visit. KEY RECOMMENDATIONS made are highlighted below: For the Governments: • • • High-level dignitary visits like that of the Prime Minister, President of India, Ministers etc. should include business delegations as an integral part of their entourage, wherever possible and appropriate. Increase the lines of credit to LAC Countries. Publicise the FOCUS LAC programme of the Government of India through the Indian Embassies in LAC Countries. For the Industry: • • • • • CII and its partners should update sector specific data for each other’s use Include wide use of video conferencing to discuss business and ease any issues concerning trade and investments. This should take place on regular intervals between CII members and its counterparts. CII and its partners should share their calendar of events for the year so that the industry members can participate in sector specific fairs, to the benefit of trade and investments. CII and its partners in Brazil, Mexico and Chile should make special efforts to include SMEs and Social Entrepreneurs wherever possible or appropriate. The business delegates must give reports that carry their success stories via appropriate media. For CII’s Partners across Latin America: • • You have two points of contact in India for all business purposes- the Government of India and CII’s Latin America and Caribbean Desk. FOCUS LAC programme of the Government of India encourages bilateral trade and benefits foreign importers of Indian products.
