Welcome!
Welcome to the latest issue of Beer Lines, the newsletter of The Beer Essentials, Horsham's real ale shop. I am sitting in the sunshine writing this newsletter in the little yard behind the shop. My Bulgarian Carrot Chillies are just starting to change colour and my “dwarf” hop plants, now up to about 16 feet, are continuing their triffid-like assault on anything that gets in their way! Anyway, enough about gardening…here is the beer news!
New Bottled Beer
Just one new bottled beer to report on this month. Ropetackle Golden Ale is a refreshing 3.4% bitter from Adur Brewery in Steyning. Light and golden with a delicate hop aroma, this is the perfect thirst quencher for when we get a prolonged spell of sunshine. I am trying to secure a very small stock of Tokyo* which hit the headlines recently as the UK’s strongest bottled beer (18.2% ABV!) and my thanks go to Dave Langford for sending me an article about it. As usual the Alcohol Health Alliance are jumping up and down and missing the point in spectacular fashion! The last thing I want to do is encourage binge drinking. I want to sell quality beer to adults who not only appreciate it but also can decide for themselves how much they should drink. I’ll let you know if I can get hold of some. Also my tasting notes should make interesting reading!
last but they have said in the West Sussex County Times that they are going to “forge ahead with the long term aim of getting rid of traffic altogether to create a café culture”. So it appears that the battle’s been won but perhaps not the war…it’s enough to drive you to drink!
On Draught
During August we hope to have on draught: Roosters Hedgehog 3.7% ABV £1.85 per pint. Wyre Piddle Piddle Express 4.3% ABV £1.95 per pint. Cottage Smooth Hound 4.3% ABV £1.95 per pint. Batemans Miss Australia 4.1% ABV £1.90 per pint. Plus a selection of other great beers t.b.c. (Please phone or check blackboard in shop for availability.)
Horsham Beer Festival 2009
As I expected, both Saturday sessions of the Beer Festival are now sold out. That said there are a few tickets being returned as people realise they have double-booked themselves. It’s a bit like a mini trading floor, as tickets come back and people come in to snap them up! I’ve still got around 150 left for the Sunday lunch session but they are going quite quickly so please give me a call if you still need tickets.
