The septic tank at shotgun was pumped and the Range # 1, 200 yd target frame location and 300 yd impact area have been reworked. All shots now impact at the same place behind the 300 yd. target frames. A sprinkler system was installed on the planting area near archery. The old camera and security system has been replaced with a new and better high resolution 24hr recording system. This system is now operational. A new lawn mower and tractor have been added to our inventory. The parking lot at the club house has been graveled. A new safe has been installed at the range office to insure proper storage of club property. Plans are underway to install new siding at shotgun and have it painted. The last peace of sidewalk at shotgun should be installed before it starts raining. Changes around the club This summer the number of shooters at shot gun has been up. The employees and club officers are working on methods to reduce the waiting time between lines. To help us in that effort, make sure that you are ready to shoot before you sign up. If you are not on the line when all the other shooters are ready you will need to re sign for a future line of trap. Shotgunners can win a free punch card. To enter this drawing place your name and phone number on the back of your used punch card and place it in the properly marked container on the counter. The club will draw out one card from time to time and provide that person with one free punch card. The first drawing will be on August 10th at 7pm. There will be a small change to the sign in requirement. Starting now all shooting areas will have a sign in sheet at their location. When you come to the range you will be required to sign in. Sign in sheets will be located near the bell switch on rifle and pistol ranges and in plain sight on the archery ranges. Please use the sign in and sign out system as it provides extra security and safety for you and the club. Remember this is now a requirement and is not optional. All members must sign in. Thank you I would like to thank every one who has helped around the club during the last month. Thanks to those who teach our many classes and train the young shooters and archers. Thanks to the members that put on our matches and league actives. A very special thank you goes out to the Carl Brattain, Roy Stephenson, Rick Grham and Bruce Dustman who worked so hard on range #1. On Saturday July the 11th there was a work party on pistol and the following members helped construct new ground baffles Dick Abbey, Brien McCrea, Bill Boettner, Paul Landis, John Blatchford, and Phil Murray. When you can attend a work party, you should as a member in good standing. When you get a chance, say thank you to our club employees. They come to work to serve you and the public shooters and are doing a great job. Don’t forget The club swap meet will be held on August 30th from 9am until noon. If you have stuff that needs to find a new home, this is the time and place. If you need some new stuff this is the time and place. Good Luck to all of our shooters at the Pacific Grand, and at our own WCW shoot in August. Shoot Safely and have fun. Manager’s Remarks Well I held another successful Range Committee meeting. Those requesting special use out numbered all others by at least 10 to 1. I would like to thank Rich Graham and Roger Ulrich for attending and talking about Bench Rest Shooting and Cast Bullet Shooting, respectively. I would appreciate it if all match directors, or their representatives would make an effort to attend Range Committee meeting as frequently as they can to tell the new member about their sport. Also, each match director must provide a budget each year for their event. This will include expected revenue and expenses (don’t forget target cost). If you need help, please see me at one of the Range committee meetings for additional information. I also need a list from each match director of everyone authorized to run their matches and the fees to be charged for each match. I would like to thank Rick Graham, John Conderman, Roger Ulrich, Bruce, Dennis for there work on Range 1. Carl Brattain Hello fellow shotgun enthusiasts. The summer weather has brought many new shooters to the shotgun range. Please help those new shooters to be safe. We now have the trappers going through safety training. In addition to safety training the trappers are calling the squads out. Please be ready to shoot when you are called out. Follow the instructions of the trappers and range masters. Shotgun will be hosting a WCW Members appreciation picnic Saturday, August, 16, 11:00am-2:00pm at the Shotgun Range. All members are invited. Last year we had an excellent turn out. This year we will be serving the usual hotdogs, hamburgers and other picnic fare, water melon, etc. In addition, thanks to Joel Skerlong’s generous contribution, we will be feasting on fresh sockey salmon! The State PITA Shoot results are in and two Kenmore shooters took some top honors. Greg Minor gained 1 yard in handicap and won Runner Up for the State “C” Class Doubles. Gwen Campbell won the Ladies preliminary singles, Ladies Singles Championship and Ladies HOA. In addition Gwen set a record by making this her 4th consecutive Ladies Singles Championship. This qualifies Gwen to shoot in the Pacific Grand’s “Best of the Best Competition”. She will be shooting against the best women shooters from the states of WA, NV, ID, CA, HA, OR, AK and maybe a few more. Good Luck Gwen! Congratulations to both of our shooters. Well done! Dates for the Pacific Grand are July 18th-25that the Evergreen Sportsman Club, Little Rock, WA. WCW will host a money added PITA Shoot August 30, at the Shotgun Range. Come out and participate or just come out and watch. Lunch will be available from Dave’s Burgers, about $5.00 for lunch. Nice shooting guys! Our next shoot will be held August 8th. Hope to see you there! Hunter Education WCW Hunter Education instructors completed a successful class June 19 and 20th. The class was filled to capacity with 15 students. The instructors used an alternative method of instruction called the paradigm method. In this method, the student has the responsibility of reviewing the material in the hunter education field book prior to the Friday evening class. A test covering the material is given early in the evening. Afterwards, students practice firearm-handling safety, selecting the correct ammunition for a firearm, loading and unloading firearms and muzzle control. On Saturday morning is a field day including setting zones of fire, field carries, crossing obstacles and in/out of a boat. The instructors lead short discussions on basic ballistics, sighting in a rifle, planning a hunt, cleaning a firearm and day / survival pack items. The class ends midmorning with live fire for either rifles or shotguns. The next scheduled class is August 21/22 with a 15-student limit. See the WCW rifle range master sign ups. Presently we have several active instructors who are finding that teaching hunting skills and safety to be a lot of fun and a rewarding experience. If you are interested in finding out more about this, contact Ben Engelking hvacschool@hvacschool.com. For those students that may need more classroom instruction, 2 of our WCW members are involved in the traditional method of instruction, which extends over several evenings. Contact George Wells – Rifle Range Master 425-7751539 or Myron Olson 360-659-8617 for class schedules and locations. Ben Engelking WCW Hunter Ed Chairman We had quite a beautiful day for our July shoot. It was sunny with just a few clouds to keep the temps down. Conditions for the most part were very good with moderate winds that generally held long enough to get a few shoots off. (Which seems like quite a luxury at times!) We were pleased to have Leonard Nicol come in and shoot with us this time, all the way from Dayton WA. He made it a point to be here for the memorial that was held for Amos Frombach, and decided to shoot with us as well. Leonard used to shoot with us several years ago. At that time he was hard to beat with his 6BR, the action of which was given to him by Amos, and the smith work done by Kenmore member Rick Beginski. He brought that same rifle with him this time and did very well. It still shoots! It was great to see Leonard again! Another guy we hadn’t seen in quite a while was Jack Pennant. It was great to have Jack back shooting with us again as well! For the first time, we got to try out the new range one configuration. A lot of work has been put in on range one recently. The 300 yard line was lowered several feet, and the 200 and 300 yard target frames are now aligned with the firing line. This makes it so the uprights will get shot up less, but it also helps to considerably lessen the time it takes to shoot matches because wind flags and rifles do not have to be moved when changing yardages now. This is a significant improvement, and it means there will be more time available after the shoots for members to use range one. Rick Graham ended up winning this shoot, and the money prize with an overall score of 400-7x. Jeff Yost was right on his heals posting a score of 399-6x for second place, and Larry Boers, all the way from Winlock WA For more info on the Kenmore Benchrest shoots contact: Rick Graham (206) 2146484 rgart@zipcon.net Richard Nicol (206) 784-1093 rlnicol@msn.com Pistol Marksmanship and Competition Seminar The 1st Saturday of each month we have a pistol training session for Bullseye and International Standard Pistol. While we are not a charity and donations are not charitable contributions for tax purposes, all donations are put to work improving the facility and its operations. This month we received: $25 Donations Scott Jones Thanks!!! Page 4 the Sportsman Newsletter Once again, we had an international flare for our May match. 8 shooters represented 3 classes; plain base, production, and heavy. Plain base high score of 395-6x was shot by Bev Pinney from Salmo, BC, Production high score of 357-2x was shot by Dick Jones, and Heavy high score of 389-3x was shot by Roger Ulrich, Match Director. Until next time, safe shooting Alice Gardner August 2009 CMP/Highpower Rifle The July match of the 2009 season was once again well attended by unclassified and also one junior High power rifle shooters. The rifles represented on the line in this match were an interesting mix. Even though the matches these days are dominated by AR-15s we still have shooters representing M-1/M-1A as well as the old faithful bolt action gun and on top of this it turned out to be a very nice Swedish Mauser 41(B). Anybody that knows me will tell you that I have shot the Swedish Mauser for a number of years in these and other prone matches with some success. I just simply am fond of this rifle and cartridge combination. Now back to the match, the conditions were great, sunny warm weather with a slight breeze. The Unclassified category winner was Sinbad Russell shooting a M-1A with a score of 401-1X followed in the 2nd place by Robert Hill with a score of 387-1X. An honorable mention goes to Sean Bavik a Junior shooting his Swedish Mauser for the first time in competition achieving a score of 258-1X. Good work Sean. We did not have sufficient shooters in the Expert and Sharpshooter categories so no prizes could be paid to Robert Shuey 1st Sharpshooter with a score of 437-4X. In the Expert category it was Robert Tykulsker that won with a score of 451-5X and to no one’s surprise the match winner once again was Richard Steed with an excellent score of 48721X. The next match is August 16th. Note after the match we will have hot dogs and other refreshments as well as the new annual awards ceremony. Thank you Orin and Richard for helping with the new shooters and running the line, your help is much appreciated. Stan Vlcak We have talked about the targets, scoring, and the different rifle classes we compete in. This time I thought we could touch on the steps for sizing the cast bullet. It is one of the more important aspects of getting the bullet to the target in a straight and true manner. There is a lot of information in books and on the web for the correct bullet size; much of this published data is not successful. Looking at the published information for loads in the CBA’s magazine, The Fouling Shot, shows what the winners are doing. The successful cast bullet competition shooter sizes the bullet for the chamber throat, commonly called “leade”, which is often .002 or .003 larger than the bore diameter. This larger diameter sizing causes the bullet to start straight into the barrel and aids accuracy. The case aligns in the chamber and the bullet aligns in the throat, starting correctly on the journey to the target. The next piece of useful information is not as commonly known. The reloader sizes the inside of the case neck to the bullet diameter. This assures the bullet base is not deformed since it is a softer lead alloy than jacket material. This is opposite to the normal process of reloading where the case neck is sized .001 smaller that the bullet diameter to hold the bullet tight for both loading and uniform ignition. If you are starting into cast bullet shooting, the easy way to perform this function is by using an oversize expander ball in your sizing die. The more serious shooter will use the bushing type of neck sizing dies, with the neck outside turned when needed. The bushing neck sizing die is a significant cost, therefore, the large expander ball method is recommended for the starting competitor. Bits and Pieces We concluded the Annual Air Pistol League with Kevin Finke as the winner averaging 92.75% and Vic Alvarez coming in 2nd with a 91.63% average. David Lewontin came in 3rd OA and 1st A Class, and Jeff Alvarez 4th OA and 1st B Class. The league was well attended as usual with 27 shooters giving it a try. And it was sanctioned by USA Shooting ending their ill considered policy of not sanctioning leagues. Time goes by quickly these days and it is almost time to begin our membership renewal cycle. Everything will be ready by the start of October for members to get renewed for 2010. When you get your new card, you will notice a couple of changes (additions) to all that is printed there. The biggest change is that for members who have had at least three continuous years of special use, their special use detail will be printed out on the reverse side of their membership card. That should solve the “I don’t remember what I was approved to do.” If it isn’t printed there, you don’t have permission to do it. Vic Alvarez August 2009 The NRA and the WCW Our club is an NRA recruiter, and we get a commission for all new members we sign up and for all renewals processed with our recruiter ID number. We receive $10 for every new member and $5 for every renewal. The club has a significant number of NRA members and it would be a real benefit to the club for all those members to renew using the form below, or by using our web site direct link to the NRA renewals….on the home page. Besides, by renewing through the club, you save $10. Let’s see, you save $10 and the club gets another $5….what a good deal. Then there are a great many WCW members who are not yet NRA members. The club would receive $10 of the the Sportsman Newsletter $25 special dues for every member who would join through the club. You would be doing your part on a national level to protect your gun and hunting rights. You save $10 and the club gets another $10….a really good deal. Sign up your wife or husband or friends on a Liberty membership for $10 (no magazine) and the club gets a $5 commission. Don’t want to get the full membership, sign up on a Liberty membership for yourself. We have been getting an extra $1,000 a year without much effort just from the few who sign up….we could get a great deal more and you would be doing yourself a favor. The benefits which come with an NRA membership are significant. You get $1,000 unscheduled firearm insurance and $10,000/ Page 5 $5,000 accidental life insurance. And you would be adding to the strength of the organization, which has passed the 4 million member mark. There is strength in numbers and the NRA numbers should be much higher. Let’s all pull together and give them the support they need. As an aside, the NRA provides the lesson plans and manuals for all our safety classes…..and grants for some of our projects. Just remember, use the form below, or use our web site direct link. Write your check to the NRA or use your credit card for easy processing. SAVE MONEY and HELP THE CLUB. Special Rates for NRA Membership $25.00 By special arrangement, the NRA is allowing us to sign-up members for $10 OFF their regular dues. Pay by credit card or your check made out to the NRA. Mail it to the club, drop it off at the Range Office or mail it directly to the NRA: National Rifle Association, Recruiter Program Department 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030-7400
