Story 1 Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss how it feels to get a
new pet, talk about ways to make and be friends, learn about
black bears
     *Democratic Processes- Research Florida and create a
map, discuss how it feels to help animals, people, etc., talk
about the history of Florida and how explorers came and
foreigners settled here
    *Global Outreach- Discuss what experiences bring diverse
people together


Story 2 Lewis and Clark and Me by Laurie Myers
      *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss some times that you
learned new things, talk about some of the places you would
like to explore
     *Goal Setting- Discuss the goals and plans that Lewis and
Clark had for their trip
     *Democratic Processes- Discuss what Lewis and Clark
learned on their journey, talk about the diversity of the United
States, learn about explorers in history and the Louisiana
Purchase, discuss the bartering system
     *Global Outreach- Discuss the idea of exploration and
how it shaped the Earth
Story 3 Grandfather’s Journey by Allen Say
     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Talk about some place that
you would enjoy moving to, share a memory of a vacation you
went on and what you enjoyed about it
     *Goal Setting- Make a plan for traveling and what places
you would visit
     *Democratic Processes-Discuss what we can learn about
the U.S. as we travel, talk about the diversity of California,
discuss becoming an American citizen, share some information
about World War II
    *Global Outreach- Research places around the world that
might be interesting to visit, learn more about Japan




Story 4 The Horned Toad Prince by Jackie Mims Hopkins
     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Make a travel brochure of a
place you might like to visit
     *Goal Setting-
     *Democratic Processes- Discuss the geography of the
Southwest, learn about Texas, talk about being responsible for
what you say and do, respect, honesty, and trust
     *Global Outreach- Learn about horned lizards and
harvesting ants
Story 5 Letters Home from Yosemite by Lisa Halvorsen
     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Learn about different National
Parks, write a travel journal about a place you visited, learn
some facts about different type of rocks
    *Goal Setting- Learn about what it takes to become a Park
Ranger
     *Democratic Processes- Discuss how Yosemite reflects
the unique qualities of the West, study the Sierra Nevada
Mountains, learn about how we have laws that protect our land
and wildlife

                     “Work and Play”

Story 1 What Jo Did by Charles R. Smith Jr.


     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss what we can learn
          from our friends and classmates. Talk about reasons
          why it is fun to be different.
     *Goal Setting- Discuss why it is important to always be
          ourselves. Have the students talk about things that
          make them unique.
     *Democratic Processes- Discuss ways that we can learn to
         appreciate the talents of others
     *Global Outreach- Discuss women’s rights and the ways
          that they have changed over the years. Compare
          women’s rights in America to the rights of women in
          other parts of the world.


Story 2 Coyote School News by Joan Sandin


     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss why it would be fun to
          write for the school newspaper
     *Goal Setting- Discuss ways that we can work together to
          achieve a goal
    *Democratic Processes- Discuss ways that news reporters
        work together to gather information for their
        articles. Also discuss why news is important.
    *Global Outreach- Compare schools from other
         parts of the world


Story 3 Grace and the Time Machine
    Adapted for Story Theater by Donald Abramson


    *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss why it is fun to use
         our imaginations. Talk about things that can be
         accomplished by being creative.
    *Goal Setting- Ask the students to think of something that
         they would love to have or invent. Encourage them
         to draw and write about their new invention.
    *Democratic Processes- Discuss ways that people can use
        their imaginations and be even more creative with
        the help of others. Talk about inventors and ways
        that they used their imaginations.
    * Global Outreach- Have the students research and
         discuss the places that Grace and her friends visited
         in the story.
Story 4 Marven of the Great North Woods by Kathryn Lasky


     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Talk about the value of doing
          a good job. Discuss how it feels to accomplish a goal
          or to know that you have done your best.
     *Goal Setting- Have the students make a list of jobs in the
          classroom that they can do. Ask them to include a
          description of each job and tell why it is important.

          during the fall. Compare fall weather in places
          around the world.

     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Talk about what interesting
          things the students learned from reading this story
     *Democratic Processes- Discuss some things that people
         do to protect whales and other sea animals.
     * Global Outreach- Discuss how the patterns in nature
          guide the lives of animals
Story 3 How Night Came from the Sea by Mary-Joan Gerson


    *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss some of the
         interesting creatures that are awake during the
         night. What makes these night creatures so
         interesting?
    *Global Outreach- Discuss time zones and the reasons
         that night and day are not the same in various places
         around the world.




Story 4 Eye of the Storm by Stephen Kramer


    *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss some of the reasons
         that people are so fascinated by storms. Discuss
         reasons why learning about storms can be both fun
         and important.
    *Goal Setting- Ask the students to make a list of things
         that they can do to prepare for a storm
    *Democratic Processes- Discuss some of the ways that
        people help one another after a natural disaster
    *Global Outreach- Discuss some of the natural disasters
         that have happened around the world in the past
         few years
Story 5 The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry


    *Enthusiasm For Learning- Have the students research
         the layers of the rainforest and create a diagram to
         illustrate what they learned. Discuss why so many
         people love the rain forest and why it is so much fun
         to learn about.
    * Goal Setting- Have the students create a poster
         persuading people to save the rainforest.
    *Democratic Processes- Discuss why it is important to
        protect our natural resources
    *Global Outreach- Discuss some of the ways that living
         things are connected

                “Puzzles and Mysteries”

Story 1 The Houdini Box by Brian Selznick


    *Enthusiasm For Learning- Explain to the students that
         this week’s story was about an illusionist. Discuss
         times when you cannot always believe what you see.
         Talk about reasons why people love magic.
    *Goal Setting- Have the students research optical
         illusions. Allow them to choose one to write about.
         (Technology Center pg. 392K)
    *Global Outreach- Discuss famous magicians from around
         the world. Compare and contrast their tricks.


Story 2 Encantado: Pink Dolphin of the Amazon
    by Sy Montgomery


    *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss why it is fun to
         observe dolphins. Discuss the ways that scientists
         research their behaviors and track them overtime.
    *Goal Setting- Encourage the students to research more
         about the pink dolphin
     *Democratic Processes- Discuss ways that people work
         together to solve mysteries (ie. scientists, doctors,
         zoologists).
     *Global Outreach- Discuss some mysteries and things that
          are still unknown in other places around the world.
          This may include cures for diseases, information
          about animals or information about other planets.


Story 3 The King in the Kitchen by Margaret E. Slattery


     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss ways that we can
          learn from our mistakes and turn them into
          successes
     *Goal Setting- Encourage the students to find an object
          around the room. Then have them think of new
          ways that this object can be used. (Science Center
          pg. 440k)
     *Democratic Processes- Discuss ways that cooks work
         together to prepare food for restaurants.
     * Global Outreach- Compare foods from around the world


Story 4 Seeker of Knowledge by James Rumford


     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss reasons why learning
          a new language can be fun and exciting
    *Goal Setting- Encourage the students to learn how to say
         basic phrases in a new language. Have them share
         this with the class
    *Democratic Processes- Discuss people who can help
        students learn a new language
    *Global Outreach- Discuss reasons why learning another
         language can help you understand more about
         another culture

          Salamander by Donald J. Sobol


    *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss ways that solving
         mysteries can be fun. Discuss ways that scientists
         solve mysteries everyday.
    * Goal Setting- Discuss reasons why it is important to pay
         close attention to detail
    *Democratic Processes- Discuss ways that people work
        together to solve daily problems and mysteries
    *Global Outreach- Compare and contrast reptiles and
         amphibians

        “Adventures by Land, Air, and Water”

Story 1 Sailing Home: A Story of a Childhood at Sea
     by Gloria Rand


     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss ways that it would be
          fun to spend a childhood at sea.
     *Democratic Processes- Discuss ways that the captain and
         the ships crew have to work together on a ship.
     *Global Outreach- Have the students choose an ocean to
          research. Then have them draw a map of the ocean
          and list the countries near it. (Science Center pg.
          516k)


Story 2 Lost City: The Discovery of Machu Picchu
     by Ted Lewin


     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss what exciting
          surprises can happen on an expedition. Talk about
          some of the things we can learn from exploring.
     *Goal Setting- Discuss some of the difficulties that
          archeologists face.
    *Democratic Processes- Discuss the importance of
        preserving history. Discuss the reasons why it is
        important to learn about other cultures and ancient
        civilizations. What are some of the things that
        history can teach us?
    *Global Outreach- Discuss the five ancient civilizations.
         Encourage the students to choose one to research
         and then create a short presentation.


Story 3 Amelia and Eleanor Go for a Ride
    by Pam Muñoz Ryan


    *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss famous American
         women. What can we learn from their bravery?
    *Goal Setting- Discuss ways that children can make a
         difference in the world, even at a young age.
         Showcase children who have shown great bravery.
    *Democratic Processes- Discuss ways that Amelia Earhart
        and Eleanor Roosevelt broke traditions and paved a
        way for female explorers.
    * Global Outreach- Discuss famous women from other
         parts of the world. What similarities do these
         women have? In what ways have they changed the
         world?


Story 4 Antarctic Journal by Jennifer Owings Dewey
    *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss reasons why
         exploring Antarctica would be both fun and exciting
    *Goal Setting- Discuss some of the sacrifices people make
         to explore what is unknown. In what ways do
         people have to give something up to accomplish
         their goal?
    *Global Outreach- Discuss how life in Antarctica is very
         different than life here in Florida.


Story 5 Moonwalk by Ben Bova


    *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss reasons why the
         moon would be an exciting place to explore.
    * Goal Setting- Discuss what things we can learn about
         ourselves when faced with a difficult situation.
         Define and discuss integrity and courage.
    *Democratic Processes- Discuss ways that astronauts
        from all over the world work together for a common
        goal.
    *Global Outreach- Discuss reasons why it is important for
         us to learn about our solar system. How can this
         knowledge help us protect the environment here on
         earth?

                  “Reaching for Goals”

Story 1 My Brother Martin by Christine King Farris


     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss famous African
          American heroes. Have the students choose a
          person to research further. Encourage them to write
          a report, create a poster, or multimedia project.
     *Goal Setting- Discuss ways that words can be inspiring.
          Encourage the students to write their own inspiring
          speech.
     *Democratic Processes- Discuss the way words can
         change peoples lives. Discuss famous speeches and
         their impact on people today.
     *Global Outreach- Discuss slavery around the world.
          What are some things we can do here in America to
          help others.


Story 2 Jim Thorpe’s Bright Path by Joseph Bruchac


     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss what we can learn
          from Jim Thorpe’s experiences. Why is his story so
          inspiring?
     *Goal Setting- Discuss ways that our abilities influence
          our personal dreams and goals.
     *Democratic Processes- Have the students discuss people
         who have influenced their lives.
     *Global Outreach- Discuss Indian Reservations (use the
          Social Studies blurb on page 669 in the Teacher’s
          Edition)


Story 3 How Tía Lola Came to Visit Stay by Julia Alvarez


     *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss some of the
          interesting things that we can learn from other
          cultures
     *Goal Setting- In the story Tia changes the heart of
          Colonel Charlesbois. Have the students discuss ways
          that they can “change a hard heart”
     *Democratic Processes- Discuss advice. Have the
         students share the best advice that they have ever
         received.
     * Global Outreach- Discuss ways that one person’s view of
          the world can affect others. Immigration would also
          be a great topic to discuss during this week.


Story 4 To Fly: The Story of the Wright Brothers
     by Wendie C. Old
    *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss what we can learn
         from the Wright brothers. What things can their
         experiences teach us about reaching our goals?
    *Goal Setting- Have the students discuss what they think
         it takes to achieve a dream or goal.
    *Democratic Processes- How did the brother’s work
        together to achieve a common goal. Why is
        teamwork important?
    *Global Outreach- Discuss ways that the Wright Brother’s
         dream changed the world


Story 5 The Man Who Went to the Far Side of the Moon
    by Bea Uusma Schyffert


    *Enthusiasm For Learning- Discuss why the Apollo 11
         mission was so important
    * Goal Setting- Encourage the students to set a goal for the
         week. Have them chart their progress and reflect on
         their achievements at the end of the week.
    *Democratic Processes- Discuss ways that the
        achievements of others can influence our own
