What is homelessness?
According to the law*, you are considered to be
homeless if…
• you have no home in the UK or anywhere else in the
world
• you have no home where you can live together with
your immediate family
• you can only stay where you are on a very temporary
basis
• you don't have permission to live where you are
• you have been locked out of home and you aren't
allowed back

• Three facts I learnt about homelessness and
The Salvation Army in this lesson

• One thing I would still like to know about
homelessness or about The Salvation Army
Homelessness & The Salvation Army
The Bible and homelessness
One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this
question: „Teacher, which is the greatest commandment
in the Law?‟
Jesus replied: „ “Love the Lord your God
with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your mind.” This is the first and
greatest commandment. And the second
is like it: “Love your neighbour as yourself.”‟
Matthew 22:35-39
The Bible and homelessness
„...When I was hungry, you gave me something to eat, and
when I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink. When I
was a stranger, you welcomed me, and when I was naked, you
gave me clothes to wear. When I was sick, you took care of
me, and when I was in jail, you visited me.‟ Then the ones who
pleased the Lord will ask, „When did we give you something to
eat or drink? When did we welcome you
as a stranger or give you clothes to wear
or visit you while you were sick or in jail?‟
...‟Whenever you did it for any of my people,
no matter how unimportant they seemed,
you did it for me.‟
Matthew 25:35-40
The Bible and homelessness
My friends, what good is it to say you have faith, when
you don't do anything to show that you really do have
faith?...If you know someone who doesn't have any
clothes or food, you shouldn't just say, „I hope all goes
well for you. I hope you will be warm and have plenty to
eat.‟ What good is it to say this,
unless you do something to help?
Faith that doesn't lead us to do
good deeds is all alone and dead!
James 2:14-17
The Bible and homelessness
Jesus replied, „Foxes have holes and birds of the air
have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his
head.‟
Luke 9:58
The Bible and homelessness
After Jesus had washed his disciples' feet and had put
his outer garment back on, he sat down again. Then he
said: „Do you understand what I have done? You call me
your teacher and Lord, and you should, because that is
who I am. And if your Lord and teacher has washed your
feet, you should do the same for
each other. I have set the example,
and you should do for each other
exactly what I have done for you.‟
John 13:12-15
