OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE SCHOOL
Spartans Parent Club Meeting
November 4, 2009
1. Call to Order - Elva called the meeting to order at 6:37 p.m. and welcomed everyone to the
Spartans Parent Club Meeting. Sonia Melendez led the opening prayer since it was the 6th
grade’s turn to host this meeting. All club members introduced themselves.
2. Head Coach Report – Elva Martin
A. Communication has been great! The flyers that she’s been approving look really good!
B. The fundraisers have been very successful
C. The book fair was a huge success! All donations received were greatly appreciated.
D. The Catholic Unity Meeting that we hosted on Sept 22nd was great! The classrooms look
amazing and we felt very proud of our school as we were giving the tours.
E. We have more sports programs this school year
F. The website has been updated
3. Student Council Report – Mrs. Cobb
A. The Halloween Carnival was a huge success. Thank you to all the volunteers and all the
generous donations.
1. Next year we should coordinate with CCD to make sure we can decorate the night before
the Halloween Carnival
4. New Business:
A. 8th Grade In-N-Out – Anna Ortiz
1. This fundraiser was very successful. They sold over 300 meals. The key was to get pre-
sales.
2. It’s a lottery drawing each year for the In-N-Out truck to come to our school. Evening
slots are easier to get, so this is a tip for next year’s 8th Grade Room Parent.
3. Anna Ortiz wants to propose a McDonald’s fundraiser where we sell a $1 McBuck for
one dollar and we would get a profit of 50%.
B. 6th Grade Bragging Session! – Sonia Melendez
1. They are going to sell Nachos (plain or with chili), fruit, a treat and a drink for $4.00.
C. Christmas See’s Drive – Veronica Quintana
1. The order forms went out in today’s family envelope. The order forms and money are
due on November 30th, to allow families to keep taking orders during the Thanksgiving
holiday.
2. She will send an email to all the Class Captains regarding the date we will meet to tally
up the orders
3. Mrs. Oh asked for suggestions as to how to get more families to participate in this
fundraiser.
i. Some suggestions were to give the top sellers in each classroom free dress, extra
recess, an ice cream party, movie tickets, and/or goodies from Oriental Trading
ii. Mrs. Oh said she will talk to the teachers during Friday’s Staff Meeting to get
their input
4. Anna Ortiz made a motion and Rosa Caballero-Rodriguez seconded the motion that we
take $50 from each classrooms profit to buy incentives to give to the top sellers
D. Sports Hot Lunch -
1. It will be on December 11th and they will be selling Quizno’s sandwiches.
5. Principal’s report – Ms. Scanlon reported on the following:
1. She was impressed with the Halloween Carnival and the Book Fair. All the volunteers
and the donations were wonderful.
2. The plastic envelopes for the weekly bulletins arrived today!
3. Basketball season starts next week. Ms. Scanlon is interviewing coaches this week.
4. Powerline is starting again.
5. Wendy Vargas is the new Office Secretary
6. Mrs. Swanson is the new 1st grade aide. She has a Math background and will be a Math
coach in the afternoon.
7. Art Trek started this week.
8. The Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive starts next week
9. Ms Scanlon asked for feedback re: the Hot Lunch program. Some parents said:
i. The chicken nuggets are cold and soggy
ii. The carne asada tacos are good
iii. The hamburgers are good
iv. Students miss the pizza and cheesy bread
10. The Student of the Month Awards ceremony has been changed to Thursday’s at 8:40
A.M. The reason for the change was to try to get more families to attend the mass with
their children. Ms. Scanlon asked for feedback and some parents said:
i. It is difficult to ask their employers for the extra time off since the awards
ceremony now ends at 9:00 A.M. and then add another hour if they stay for mass
ii. Having the awards ceremony at 8:00 A.M. gave the parents a chance to talk to the
other parents
iii. Parents need more notification that their child is going to receive an award (i.e.
notify them four days in advance so they can talk to their employer about going in
late)
Mrs. Oh reported on the following:
1. The Catholic Unity Meeting that we hosted was great!
2. The parish has permits for the new church! They have about 80% of the funds.
3. She flew to Seattle this weekend to look for funding for our new school.
4. Mrs. Diaz will be returning to OLG soon and will focus on scrip and escrip.
5. We are sharing resources with our sister schools.
i. The first event, Cyber Bullying was held at St. Anthony’s School. Unfortunately,
only ten people showed up. The presenter did a fantastic job, so hopefully we can
bring her back to speak on the same topic at OLG.
ii. The principals meet and share their school’s calendar, so this will help us support
each others events, etc.
6. She is working on two surveys; one will compare the Catholic schools in Oxnard and the
other will focus on OLG
6. The Spartan Parent Club meeting will be on Wednesday, Jan. 6th (place to be determined) and
will convene at 6:30 P.M. A December meeting will not be held due to the holidays. Continue
to email agenda items to Elva at emprofessional@yahoo.com
7. Closing Prayer/Adjournment Elva led the closing prayer. The meeting adjourned at 7:32 P.M.
Respectfully Submitted,
Veronica Quintana, Statistician
