FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Hundreds of Salvation Army Staff,
Volunteers Serving Tornado Survivors in Six States
Personnel from MN, ND likely to be called up
Duluth, Minn. – Hundreds of Salvation Army staff and volunteers are serving disaster survivors
across the southern U.S., where tornadoes have killed at least 272 people, injured countless
others and caused catastrophic property damage. Hundreds of thousands are currently without
electricity.
Disaster teams are providing food, beverages, emotional/spiritual care, clean-up kits, hygiene
products and other support for survivors and relief workers in Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi,
Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia. There are 32 Salvation Army mobile kitchens available for
operation, one of which is capable of serving 20,000 meals a day.
It is likely that teams from Minnesota and North Dakota will be called to serve during the next
four to six weeks. “We sent our mobile kitchen to Fargo for the Salvation Army’s flood relief
efforts in the Red River Valley this spring, and if need be, we will send it directly to serve in
areas hit by these violent tornados in the south,” said Envoy Alan Carlson, administrator at The
Salvation Army-Duluth. Currently, disaster teams from seven southern states are on standby.
The Salvation Army is grateful to the public for their continued financial support. To donate, call
800-SAL-ARMY, visit www.thesalarmy.org or mail a check to 2445 Prior Ave. N., Roseville,
MN 55113. Be sure to designate your gift “April 2011 Tornado Outbreak.”
One hundred percent of all disaster donations are used to provide direct assistance.
Donations of hard goods are not being accepted because they require costly storage and
transportation. Monetary donations are the best way to help tornado survivors and rescue
workers because they allow The Salvation Army to immediately meet the specific needs of
disaster survivors.
