Harper’s youth sewing program offers more than 25 years of experience and fun teaching fresh new projects to kids of all ages. Our classes offer instruction in basic sewing skills, sewing machine operation and encouragement to build on those skills creatively. Each class presents a unique project(s) with differing interest and skill levels. Students experience the joy of creating their own look and style. Sewing is sew much fun—and Harper’s helps bring out the artist in everyone!

Our "Summer of the Skirt" Contest
Show off your style! Create a skirt, using fabrics that you have purchased at Harper’s. You can use any pattern or create your own design. Add trims, embroidery, ruffles or frills! The deadline for skirt entries to be included in the contest is June 30. When you turn in your skirt, and contest registration, you will receive a $10 coupon for shopping here at Harpers! All skirts will be on display at the store through out the entire month of July. Prizes will be awarded based upon viewer’s choice. We will have ballots in the store for customers to vote. The winners will be announced on August 1 and prizes will be awarded. The grand prize: a $50 gift certificate to Harper’s. Prizes will also be awarded for each of the following five categories: Best Original Design and Execution Best Reflection of Current Fashion Trends Best Use of Embellishment Young Sewer’s Award (Ages 12 and under) Teen Sewer’s Award (Ages 13-18)

Do drop by our class preview! It’s Thursday, May 22 at 6:30 pm. Meet our talented teachers and see the samples for upcoming classes. This class is designed especially for girls and boys who are eager to learn to sew. Students learn sewing basics and how to use the sewing machine as they create their projects that have been selected with the needs and interests of our youngest stitchers in mind. Meets 4 times. Stitchin' and the Kitchen ... for Kids!
A new offering for our Kids in the Kitchen series ... and part of a new program with our next-door neighbor, The Culinary Center in downtown Overland Park. We have joined forces to offer you a unique class that combines sewing with cooking - this one is geared for kids ages 9 to 14. We'll meet at Harper's at 9 a.m. for a morning sewing class where we'll learn step-by-step (in a kid-friendly way) how to create a colorful apron that each kid makes and takes home. (Your budding clothing designer will have a nice variety of fabrics from which to choose!) After our sewing extravaganza, we'll head next door to The Culinary Center for nibbles and a fun, hands-on cooking class with one of our talented chefs. We'l1 learn some great cooking techniques as we help to make a great kid-friendly" lunch to share. So, c'mon you little "sew and sews," let's get those creative juices flowing! The Knife-Edge Pillow
Pillows add a splash of color to any room. After this class, you will be ready to sew a pile of plush accent pillows for your home. Driver's Ed for Sewing Machines
This class is a must for new sewing machine owners. Maybe you inherited a sewing machine or dug one out of the closet. Bring your machine (newly serviced, if needed, we give free estimates), accessories including power cord, foot pedal, and book (we can order most books). Intro to Draping
Become your own designer! Have you ever had an idea in your mind but were not able to find just the right commercial pattern to be able to execute it? This class can bring you one step closer to creating your own custom patterns! Learn the basic skills required to start draping your own bodice sloper on a partner. We've been brainstorming with our next-door neighbor, The Culinary Center in downtown Overland Park, and have joined forces to offer you a unique class that combines sewing with cooking! We'll meet at Harper's at 9 a.m. for a morning sewing class where we'll learn step-by-step how to create a beautiful, reversible table runner that you make and take home. (You'll have a nice selection of fabrics from which to choose!) After our sewing extravaganza, we'll all head next door to The Culinary Center for an appetizer and a fun, handson cooking class - Fiesta-Style - with one of our talented chefs. We'11 1earn some great cooking techniques as we help to create a seasonal Fruit Salsa using the freshest ingredients from the farmers' market. Have you looked at some of the wonderful new patterns, but doubted your ability to make them on your own? This is the course to take if you have intermediate level skills and would like to fine-tune them. Take this course as many times as you wish. Val’s Seasonal Cottage Jumper
We will use Indygo Junction’s Goin’ to Market Jumper Pattern to create an all season jumper with side pockets. We will use the serger to insert piping as well as some finishing. The bodice will be embroidered, using our Husqvarna Viking Embroidery Sewing Machines with a design of your choice or perhaps a monogram. Made to Measure Skirt
Break free from commercial patterns and learn to make a custom made skirt that is sized and styled just for you! Students will learn to take their own body measurements and use them to draft a custom pattern for an A-line skirt. Jo’s Little Women
Joining Jo’s Little Women may be the best decision you ever made to improve your skills at piecing techniques, hand and machine quilting, fabric selection, and appliqué. Experienced quilt teachers will offer instruction, while also providing a forum for sharing information about quilt history and the newest notions and fabrics at Harper’s. Inspirational show and tell, great door prizes, and Jo Morton’s patterns for small quilts are all part of the great value of Jo’s Little Women Club. Join us today for the current session. The club meets the first Wednesday of each month. New pattern every month—class fee includes patterns presented during the six-month session. The Fractured Fabric Society
This non-traditional stitch group provides a nurturing environment for individuals to share projects, resources and inspirations. Meetings consist of show and tell and short demonstrations followed by individual work time in a studio setting. Students may bring individual projects, both completed and in progress. Project Linus
Your volunteer contribution is needed to provide security blankets for traumatized and/or critically ill children through Project Linus! Bring your basic sewing tools – scissors, pins, thread, etc. You may bring your own donation of fabric or we will have previously donated fabric available. Completed quilts are welcome for “show and tell”. Harper’s is a new drop-off location for your donations of completed quilts. Want more info, email us! Block A Month
Learn the fine art of hand piecing by making a 12” quilt block. A different pattern is offered each month. This is an ongoing class, so you can make a quilt of any size to suit your needs. Strip Club
It’s: Provocative: Strips pre-cut to complete an original project designed by teachers and friends of Harper’s. Tempting: A chance to see the selected fabrics ahead of time for each month’s project in the form of a “Strip Tease”. Free: Tips and instruction. Sew and Share Studio

Class refund policy
We make our commitment to our instructors 1 week before the start of classes. Therefore, refunds are available when the cancellation is made 1 week before the first class, less a $5 handling fee. After that, no refunds or credits can be given. If a class must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, those who register for that class will be contacted and given the choice of a full refund or the substitution of another class. To help prevent class cancellations, register early.

Trip For “2”To Boston—Retreat!
Make two quilts at the same time! Grab a friend and a kit. 1 kit makes 2 quilts. One of you should be a strong sewer and the other efficient in rotary cutting skills. This beginner level quilt is fun for everyone. The pattern has 2 sets of instructions to help each quilter. Quilting Basics
Beginner Machine Quilting
We will prepare a quilt sandwich in class. Using these tips on your next your quilt it will be free of tucks and puckers. From there you will learn the basics of machine quilting, starting and stopping your quilting lines, marking straight lines and gentle curves. Quilting 101 The Basics
At the end of our six sessions, you will have learned the basic skills of contemporary quiltmaking: fabric selection and care, rotary cutting, accurate piecing, quilting with a walking foot, and binding. You choose the project to fit your time—with homework: a 40" x 52" quilt or, all done in class, an 18" x 42" table runner. No experience is required. Frame Quilting Basics
Learn how to load an entire quilt on the New Generation frame here at Harper’s. Once we’ve gotten the frame loaded, we’ll quilt a crib quilt in class. You’ll use simple meander or any free motion design you desire. This is a hands-on class! Learn by doing it yourself with a little guidance from our knowledgeable staff. Quilting Basics in a Day
As we make a lovely wall hanging with strip pieced blocks, four patches and stars, you will learn all the basics of to make a quilt top. This includes basic color theory, fabric care, design elements, fussy cutting, sewing an accurate 1/4" seam, pressing, squaring up blocks, and adding borders. Rotary cutting looks so easy. And it is when you have the right tools and a little know-how. Try out the different cutters, rulers and mats before you buy.
