What’s New at June—September 2008 Try our youth sewing program this summer Harper’s youth sewing program offers more than 25 years of experience and fun teaching fresh new projects to kids of all ages. Our classes offer instruction in basic sewing skills, sewing machine operation and encouragement to build on those skills creatively. Each class presents a unique project(s) with differing interest and skill levels. Students experience the joy of creating their own look and style. Sewing is sew much fun—and Harper’s helps bring out the artist in everyone! Inside Kids Classes A new market tote Stitchin’ & the Kitchen 2 2 3 4-5 6 7 Our "Summer of the Skirt" Contest Show off your style! Create a skirt, using fabrics that you have purchased at Harper’s. You can use any pattern or create your own design. Add trims, embroidery, ruffles or frills! The deadline for skirt entries to be included in the contest is June 30. When you turn in your skirt, and contest registration, you will receive a $10 coupon for shopping here at Harpers! All skirts will be on display at the store through out the entire month of July. Prizes will be awarded based upon viewer’s choice. We will have ballots in the store for customers to vote. The winners will be announced on August 1 and prizes will be awarded. The grand prize: a $50 gift certificate to Harper’s. We will demystify how to thread, operate, get you up and running so you can start or return to sewing. Let us help you! Have you ever had an idea in your mind but were not able to find just the right commercial pattern to be able to execute it? This class can bring you one step closer to creating your own custom patterns! Learn the basic skills required to start draping your own bodice sloper on a partner. Students will learn the basic principles for draping fabric on the body and how to translate draped fabric pieces into a workable sewing pattern. Sign up with a friend or we can pair you up. (You'll have a nice selection of fabrics from which to choose!) We will use the serger to insert piping as well as some finishing. Students will learn to take their own body measurements and use them to draft a custom pattern for an A-line skirt. It'll be "sew" tasty! 3 Meeting Monthly Jo’s Little Women Joining Jo’s Little Women may be the best decision you ever made to improve your skills at piecing techniques, hand and machine quilting, fabric selection, and appliqué. Experienced quilt teachers will offer instruction, while also providing a forum for sharing information about quilt history and the newest notions and fabrics at Harper’s. Inspirational show and tell, great door prizes, and Jo Morton’s patterns for small quilts are all part of the great value of Jo’s Little Women Club. Join us today for the current session. The club meets the first Wednesday of each month. New pattern every month—class fee includes patterns presented during the six-month session. Therefore, refunds are available when the cancellation is made 1 week before the first class, less a $5 handling fee. After that, no refunds or credits can be given. I will show you how to make this fun wall hanging in short order. There are NO matching seams, and no way to sew this together wrong. Buggy Barn patterns are a modified type of stack ‘n whack. They are fast, fun and very eye-catching. Once you make one, you’ll find it hard to stop. Join us for some fun! Grab a friend and a kit. 1 kit makes 2 quilts. One of you should be a strong sewer and the other efficient in rotary cutting skills. This beginner level quilt is fun for everyone. The pattern has 2 sets of instructions to help each quilter. Toni designed this pattern and has taught how to make these two quilts all over the country. Using these tips on your next your quilt it will be free of tucks and puckers. From there you will learn the basics of machine quilting, starting and stopping your quilting lines, marking straight lines and gentle curves. Finally you will be introduced to the fun of free motion. Kits available. You choose the project to fit your time—with homework: a 40" x 52" quilt or, all done in class, an 18" x 42" table runner. No experience is required. This includes basic color theory, fabric care, design elements, fussy cutting, sewing an accurate 1/4" seam, pressing, squaring up blocks, and adding borders.
